Middle Eastern Studies is a vibrant and growing discipline in the United States and around the world. Students wishing to enter this rich and varied discipline can begin with a major in Arabic Studies at Williams. The major is designed to give students a foundation in the Arabic language and to provide the opportunity for the interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary study of the Arab, Islamic, and Middle Eastern arenas. The Major in Arabic Studies Students wishing to major in Arabic Studies must complete nine courses, including the following four courses: ARAB 101-102 Elementary Arabic ARAB 201 Intermediate Arabic I ARAB 202 Intermediate Arabic II Students must also take five courses in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies in affiliated departments. At least two of these courses should be from the arenas of language and the arts (DIV I) and at least two from politics, religion, economics, and history (DIV II). At least two of these courses must be at an advanced level (300 or 400 level). Hence came my study entitled "The Child in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry", which is an attempt to clarify the symbols of the word (the child) and what it indicates according to the context in which they are mentioned, as well as the statement of the aesthetic aspects of how to employ these symbols through the selection of poetic texts of modern poets in which the image of the child was mentioned Where this image was linked to the intellectual and political framework of the trends of Iraqi poets to create with it multiple connotations that were in harmony with the successive conflicts and revolutions that the poet employed to express intellectual, political and artistic positions. Modern Iraqi poetry by this expression means what many poets wrote in a non-traditional or traditional (classical) poetry curriculum in the literature of their languages. -

Cultural Continuity in Modern Iraqi Painting between 1950- 1980 Shakiba Sharifian* Mehdi Mohammadzade** Silvia Naef*** Mostafa Mehraeen**** Abstract Since the early years of 1950, which represent the development period of modern Iraqi art, the “return to the roots” movement has been an impartible mainstream in Iraq. The first generation of modern artists like Jewad Salim and Shakir Hassan Al-Said considered “cultural continuity” and the link between “tradition and modernity” and “inspiration from heritage1” as the main essence of their artistic creation and bequeathed this approach to their next generation. Having analyzed and described a selection of artworks of modern Iraqi artists, this paper discusses the evolution of modern Iraqi art, and aims to determine cultural and artistic continuity in modern paintings of Iraq. It also seeks to answer the questions that investigate the socio-cultural factors that underlie the formation of art and establish a link between traditional and modern ideas and lead to continuity in tradition. Therefore, the research hypothesis is put to scrutiny on the basis of Robert wuthnow’s theory. According to Wuthnow, although configuration and the objective production of this movement is rooted in the “mobilization of resources”, the artistic content and approach of the painting movement (i.e. the continuation of the tradition along with addressing modern ideas) is influenced by factors such as “social Horizon”, “existing discursive context” and “cultural capital” of the painters. -

He was a brilliant intellectual poet, educated, ambitious, and bold in his poetry, and devoted a great deal of his attention and self-care, and his creative effort in his sober poetic speeches for the cause of (women), the symbol of love for the homeland, the land and life. She has been a teaching artist with the Washington State Arts Commission’s Arts in Education Program since 1995, and a writer-in-the-schools with Seattle Arts and Lectures’ WITS Program since 1997. Approaching the Civil Rights Movement through Poetry Jason Lee Middle School is perched in an area above the docks and railroad terminus of central Tacoma, Washington, which has housed a succession of immigrant populations throughout the last century. Recent arrivals from Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Central and South America have entered a community that struggles against being identified as disadvantaged. In January of 2003, I was invited by seventh-grade language arts teachers Justina Johnson and Chad Davidson to deliver a series of poetry workshops in conjunction with their current unit on the Civil Rights Movement. My goal was to get the students to care about civil rights by bringing the subject into the present tense. Most of my students’ parents were born after 1965, so the children were already twice removed from the roots of the movement. I wanted to show them that movements mean just that: actions towards change put in motion by questions. The first question middle-school students have is, “What does this have to do with me?” By asking the age-old question: “Where are you from?” I invited them to see themselves in the context of the ongoing pursuit of the American dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. -
