Since the action took place in a boat on the open sea, where would the music come from? Raksin reportedly responded by asking Hitchcock where the cameras came from. This course examines film sound practices, focusing on cross-modal perception and cognition: on ways in which sounds influence what we “see” and images influence what we “hear.” Classes are conducted in a lecture format and involve multimedia demonstrations. We will be tackling the following questions: • How and why does music and sound effects work in films? • How did they come to be paired with the motion picture? • How did film sound conventions develop and what are their theoretical, socio-cultural, and cognitive bases? • How does non-speech sound contribute to a film’s narrative and how can such contribution be creatively explored? Aesthetics of the Motion Picture Soundtrack – Spring 2014 – Section 01 Page 1 of 12 COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES Course examines Classical Hollywood as well as more recent film soundtrack practices, focusing on the interpretation of film sound relative to ‘expectancy’ theories of meaning and emotion.

Highlights include an adaptation of Charlotte Wood’s critically acclaimed novel The Natural Way of Things into a feature film; a family film Monster Nanny with Ridley Scott attached to co-produce; an absurdist New Zealand co-production Nude Tuesday written by Jackie van Beek (The Breaker Upperers); and feature film Agaat set in the apartheid era, helmed by acclaimed writer and director, Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker). Development funds allow works to continue through the creative process, such as allowing the writer to work on further drafts, with the aim to get the title ready for production. This is the last slate of Story Development projects to receive funding under Screen Australia’s previous development guidelines which were replaced on 1 July 2018. “This slate encompasses a wide range of genres, from comedy to family drama, featuring both adaptations and originals. It’s great to see popular Australian children’s and fiction novels being adapted for the screen and some excellent comedies emerging from online creatives including Bin Chickens centred on Sydney’s ibis community and The Racka from renowned YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou,” said Nerida Moore, MEDIARELEASE Senior Development Manager at Screen Australia. “The new story development guidelines have opened up funding opportunities to creators across all platforms with a more streamlined application process and flexible eligibility requirements.

  • Is the Ultimate Collective Filmmaking Experience
SPRINGSTEEN & I “SPRINGSTEEN & I” is the ultimate collective filmmaking experience - for the people and by the people, which will culminate in a unique feature musicdocumentary set to be released in cinemas across the world in 2013. The production team will edit the footage to feature length and are therefore requesting that submissions be raw footage rather than edited material. As well as moving image accounts on camera, the filmmakers are looking for fans to provide photographs, old footage or audio narration to help them build up a picture of what the acclaimed songwriter and musician means to them. Movie and image files will be able to be quickly uploaded through the film’s website www.springsteenandi.com by following simple online instructions. Ideally, the higher quality the footage the better, but the producers stress that any equipment, from smartphones to hi-def cameras are accepted – as long as they are all UNDER 5 MINUTES IN LENGTH. Anything longer and participants will need to contact the production team to agree on delivery methods. About director Baillie Walsh Baillie Walsh has created many iconic videos for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Massive Attack and INXS alongside award-winning commercial campaigns for Levis, Sony and a hologram of Kate Moss for Alexander McQueen. Baillieʼs film work includes Mirror Mirror – Limitation of Life, which drew international acclaim and was selected for the Berlin and Toronto International Film Festivals and Lord Donʼt Slow Me Down, a fly-on-the-wall look at the band Oasis as well as the feature drama Flashbacks Of A Fool which he both wrote and directed.
