Ben Toth, Vocal Coach to the Stars
Vocal coach Ben Toth is also a player The performer-composer helps prepare Beau Bridges for his Broadway singing debut while his own career flourishes. December 26, 2011 | By Diane Haithman, Special to the Los Angeles Times As the old joke goes: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" "Practice, practice." That punch line would have to be rewritten for vocal coach, performer and composer Ben Toth. Toth, 34, got to Carnegie Hall — and the Hollywood Bowl and Broadway — by helping other people practice, practice and practice some more. During a late November interview at a Los Feliz cafe, Toth — whose clients include Lea Michele, Taye Diggs, Josh Radnor, Wayne Brady, Christina Hendricks and Mandy Patinkin — was on a high from serving as musical director, arranger and backup singer for "Cheyenne Jackson's Cocktail Hour: Music From the 'Mad Men' Era" at Carnegie Hall" on Nov. 18. But there wasn't much time to relax and enjoy: Toth was also coaching Beau Bridges for his Broadway singing debut in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Bridges is stepping in for John Larroquette as corporate tycoon J.B. Biggley in January, and Toth had been working with him for about six weeks, including bicoastal Skype sessions when Toth's career took him to New York. Bridges, whose latest film, "The Descendants," is getting Oscar buzz, joins the cast Jan. 3, at the same time that Darren Criss replaces Daniel Radcliffe. Toth met the actor in 2009 on a production of "Guys and Dolls" at the Hollywood Bowl. Bridges' success in "Guys and Dolls" led to his being cast in "How to Succeed in Business." Bridges, 70, has acted on Broadway before ("Where's Daddy?," "Who's Who in Hell"), but this will be his first time singing on the Great White Way, and he wasn't going to do it without Toth. -

Character Descriptions (Alphabetical Order by Character)
Character Descriptions (alphabetical order by character) Lisette Beaufort (Lyne Renée) Lisette Beaufort, an alluring French anatomy artist, is loosely inspired by the few daring female photographers and artists of the time. Lisette has been tasked with creating medical art for an anatomy book and has come to Virginia to document the wounded. It is no accident that she chooses Mansion House Hospital to begin her assignment. She knows Dr. Foster (Josh Radnor) too well; she met and had a brief affair with him in France and there’s still chemistry between them, mixed with animus over their failed romance. Sensuous and bohemian, bold and outspoken, Lisette quickly creates a stir in the hospital... Lyne on Lisette: “I think Lisette is truly different than anyone else in this world she enters. We are in war time. She is someone who is very disarming because she doesn’t care about rules and traditions and she speaks her mind. In that time, that was very different from how women would carry themselves. Also, funny enough, I am an artist myself. I draw classical portraits and I paint. For my audition, I actually did a portrait of Mary. It has really made it easier to portray Lisette, I think. As an actress, you can pretend to sketch, but in my scenes, I was truly looking and taking in my subjects.” Matron Brannon (Suzanne Bertish) Matron Brannon is the formidable Irishwoman who knows and sees all at the hospital. Her loose job description seems to encompass not only housekeeping, but keeping the staff and volunteers in line. -

Conspiracy Theory? the Ethical Paradox of “Big Is Bad”
757 CONSPIRACY THEORY? THE ETHICAL PARADOX OF “BIG IS BAD” ARNOLD J. JOHNSON† I. INTRODUCTION The late 1950s and early 1960s elicit fond memories amongst to- day’s baby boomers, who annoy successor generations with their em- bellished reflections on the “good ol’ days.” A dawning of America they would say, as the store fronts of a plethora of thriving middle class towns struck a seemingly perfect balance between small business and retail juggernauts the likes of F.W. Woolworth Company, J.C. Penny, Sears, Roebuck & Company, and Montgomery Ward. The local banker was the pillar of the community, the family doctor kept everyone well, and the town dentist filled teeth–quite a few of them it would seem. More importantly, there was simply no problem, legal or personal, too big for that iconic lawyer in the small Main Street office. It was a time of optimism and a “can do” attitude, as the Ameri- can business machine that would eventually be disparaged as “big” was creating jobs and building chrome-laden cars and trucks, washers and dryers, televisions and radios, and countless other contraptions that would bring convenience to everyday life. Ethics and profession- alism were a given, as reputations mattered in these communities where everyone knew everyone else. For the first and last time in this article it might be said that big was good, or at least not presumed bad. What happened? Could it simply be that business itself changed, becoming more detached from the public as it grew larger and more complex? Perhaps the world evolved, with big business falling out of favor with inevitable shifts in pop culture and politics. -

Bryan Smith: Bryan Smith here and welcome to the DreamPath Podcast, where I try to get inside the heads of talented creatives from all over the world. My goal is to demystify and humanize the creative process and make it accessible to everyone. Now let's jump in. Bryan Smith: Jere Shea is on the show today. Jere is a classically trained actor who grew up in Boston and attended Boston College. He then went to the prestigious Tisch School in New York, and not long after that, got a starring role on Broadway as Giorgio in Stephen Sondheim's Passion. By the way, if you're interested in seeing that exact Broadway production of the musical Passion, it's available in its entirety on YouTube. Bryan Smith: Jere was nominated for a Tony in that musical and then went on to star in the crime thriller Southey with Donnie Wahlberg, Lawrence Tierney, Rose McGowan and Will Arnette. Then Jere took an unusual turn for a successful actor. I won't spoil what the turn was here in the intro, but I think you'll really enjoy hearing Jere talk about the choices he made after achieving so much success in theater and film. Bryan Smith: Jere's more recent work can be seen on the Showtime series, City on a Hill, in which he plays a police detective in Boston in the early '90s. Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Jere's co-stars in the series include Kevin Bacon, Sarah Sharhey, Aldis Hodge, Jonathan Tucker and Mark O'Brien among many other super talented actors. -
