Published for the first time more than a decade ago as a booklet in a modest cyclostyled shape by the Cultural Department of the Indonesian Embassy in India, it has been revised several times in Jakarta in the same form to keep up to date with new discoveries and current theories. Since it seemed to have filled a need felt by foreigners as well as Indonesians to obtain an elementary knowledge of Indonesia's past, it has been thought wise to publish it now in a printed form with the aim to reach a larger public than before. -

KAKAWIN RAMAYANA Oleh I Ketut Nuarca PROGRAM STUDI SASTRA JAWA KUNO FAKULTAS ILMU BUDAYA UNIVERSITAS UDAYANA APRIL 2017 Pengantar Peninggalan naskah-naskah lontar (manuscript) baik yang berbahasa Jawa Kuna maupun Bali yang ada di masyarakat Bali telah lama menjadi perhatian para peneliti baik peneliti nusantara maupun asing. Mereka utamanya peneliti asing bukan secara kebetulan tertarik pada naskah-naskah ini tetapi mereka sudah lama menjadikan naskah-naskah tersebut sebagai fokus garapan di beberapa pusat studi kawasan Asia Tenggara utamanya di eropa. Publikasi-publikasi yang ada selama ini telah membuktikan tingginya kepedulian mereka pada bidang yang satu ini. Hal ini berbeda keadaannya dibandingkan dengan di Indonesia. Luasnya garapan tentang bidang ini menuntut adanya komitmen pentingnya digagas upaya-upaya antisipasi untuk menghindari punahnya naskah-naskah dimaksud. Hal ini penting mengingat masyarakat khususnya di Bali sampai sekarang masih mempercayai bahwa naskah- naskah tersebut adalah sebagai bagian dari khasanah budaya bangsa yang di dalamnya mengandung nilai-nilai budaya yang adi luhung. Di Bali keberadaan naskah-naskah klasik ini sudah dianggap sebagai miliknya sendiri yang pelajari, ditekuni serta dihayati isinya baik secara perorangan maupun secara berkelompok seperti sering dilakukan melalui suatu tradisi sastra yang sangat luhur yang selama ini dikenal sebagai tradisi mabebasan. Dalam tradisi ini teks-teks klasik yang tergolong sastra Jawa Kuna dan Bali dibaca, ditafsirkan serta diberikan ulasan isinya sehingga terjadi diskusi budaya yang cukup menarik banyak kalangan. Tradisi seperti ini dapat dianggap sebagai salah satu upaya bagaimana masyarakat Bali melestarikan warisan kebudayaan nenek moyangnya, serta sedapat mungkin berusaha menghayati nilai-nilai yang terkandung di dalam naskah-naskah tersebut. Dalam tradisi ini teks-teks sastra Jawa Kuna menempati posisi paling unggul yang paling banyak dijadikan bahan diskusi. -
Representation of Pluralism in Literary History from Riau Island, Indonesia
Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 6, Issue 2 – Pages 83-104 Representation of Pluralism in Literary History from Riau Island, Indonesia By Mu᾽jizah One kind of the genre in literature is literary history, often called historiography traditional. In 17th--19th century this type of work was commonly found in the Riau Island manuscripts, especially in Pulau Penyengat. This area in ancient times became a scriptorium of Malay manuscripts. Several authors and scribes’ works, such as Raja Haji, Raja Ali Haji, Raja Ibrahim, and Salamah Binti Ambar and a descendant of Encik Ismail bin Datuk Karkun, were found in the region. Their works among others are Tuhafat An-Nafis, Silsilah Melayu, dan Bugis, and Hikayat Negeri Johor. In Indonesia, the manuscripts are kept in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta and Indrasakti Foundation in Riau Island. Some manuscripts among others were found in the Leiden University Library and KITLV Library in Netherlands. The historiography is useful to explore the source of historical knowledge, especially in search for understanding the process in the formation of Malay ethnic group with plural identities in Indonesia. The aim is to find representation of pluralism in the past Malay literary history which has contributed and strengthened nationalism. In the study we use qualititative research and descriptive methods of analysis. The research has found that the Malay ethnic group in Indonesia derived from various ethnic groups that integrated and became a nation with pluralities. According to the myth, the Malay ethnic group came from the unity between the upper-world or the angelic world and the under-world depicted as the marriage between Putri Junjung Buih and a human being. -
Contemporary Literature from the Chinese Diaspora in Indonesia
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE FROM THE CHINESE 'DIASPORA' IN INDONESIA Pamela Allen (University of Tasmania) Since the fall of Suharto a number of Chinese-Indonesian writers have begun to write as Chinese-Indonesians, some using their Chinese names, some writing in Mandarin. New literary activities include the gathering, publishing and translating (from Mandarin) of short stories and poetry by Chinese-Indonesians. Pribumi Indonesians too have privileged Chinese ethnicity in their works in new and compelling ways. To date little of this new Chinese-Indonesian literary activity has been documented or evaluated in English. This paper begins to fill that gap by examining the ways in which recent literary works by and about Chinese-Indonesians give expression to their ethnic identity. Introduction Since colonial times the Chinese have been subjected to othering in Indonesia on account of their cultural and religious difference, on account of their perceived dominance in the nation’s economy and (paradoxically, as this seems to contradict that economic - 1 - dominance) on account of their purported complicity with Communism. The first outbreak of racial violence towards the Chinese, engineered by the Dutch United East Indies Company, was in Batavia in 1740.1 The perceived hybridity of peranakan Chinese (those born in Indonesia) was encapsulated in the appellation used to describe them in pre-Independence Java: Cina wurung, londa durung, Jawa tanggung (‘no longer a Chinese, not yet a Dutchman, a half- baked Javanese’).2 ‘The Chinese are everywhere -

Lontar’s Publications Division, the backbone of the organization, has the significant task of determining which literary works are to be translated so as to reflect Indonesia’s cultural wealth. Introduction. The Javanese script, or aksara Jawa, is used for writing the Javanese language, the native language of one of the peoples of Java, known locally as basa Jawa. It is a descendent of the ancient Brahmi script of India, and so has many similarities with modern scripts of South Asia and Southeast Asia which are also members of that family. The Javanese script is also used for writing Sanskrit, Jawa Kuna (a kind of Sanskritized Javanese), and Kawi, as well as the Sundanese language, also spoken on the island of Java, and the Sasak language, spoken on the island of Lombok. Javanese script was in current use in Java until about 1945; in 1928 Bahasa Indonesia was made the national language of Indonesia and its influence eclipsed that of other languages and their scripts. Traditional Javanese texts are written on palm leaves; books of these bound together are called lontar, a word which derives from ron ‘leaf’ and tal ‘palm’. 2.1. Consonant letters. Dari itu banyak terbit dan beredar di masyarakat buku saku Kidung Pancayadnya. Isi setiap buku tersebut nyaris sama. Buku-buku ini membangun pemahaman masyarakat bahwa kakawin yang dipakai untuk mengiringi upacara yadnya telah baku tanpa melihat substansi makna filosofi bait-bait tersebut. Masalahnya beberapa anggota masyarakat berpendapat ada bait-bait kakawin yang biasa dipakai mengiringi upacara kematian, tidak boleh dinyanyikan di pura. Di samping itu juga cara menembangkan kakawin belum baik dan benar. Hal ini juga terjadi di desa Susut, Bangli. Setelah dikaji, ternyata mereka salah memahami makna filosofis bait-bait kakawin tersebut. Hasilnya, semua bait kakawin bisa dinyanyikan di pura karena salah satu fungsinya sebagai sarana berdoa. Setiap upacara yadnya diiringi dengan melantunkan bait-bait kakawin yang telah disesuaikan substansi makna dari bait-bait tersebut dengan yadnya yang diiringi. Demikian pula mereka baru tahu bahwa menembangkan kakawin ada aturannya. Kata kunci: kakawin, yadnya, doa, guru-lagu. 1.Pendahuluan Kakawin dan parwa merupakan karya sastra Jawa Kuna yang hidup subur pada zaman Majapahit. Ketika Majapahit jatuh dan masuknya agama Islam, maka karya sastra kakawin banyak yang diselamatkan di Bali yang masih satu kepercayaan dengan Majapahit yaitu Hindu (Zoetmulder, 1983). Dari segi bentuk, kakawin berbentuk puisi dengan persyaratan (prosodi) satu bait terdiri dari empat baris yang diikat dengan guru-lagu. -

The Crawfurd collection, forming the bulk of the manuscripts, provides a picture of the types of literature being written in Central Java in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a period which Dr. Pigeaud has described as a Literary Renaissance.1 Because they were acquired by John Crawfurd during his residence as an official of the British administration on Java, 1811-1815, these manuscripts have a convenient terminus ad quem with regard to composition. A large number of the items are dated, a further convenience to the research worker, and the dates are seen to cluster in the four decades between AD 1775 and AD 1815. A number of the texts were originally obtained from Pakualam I, who was installed as an independent Prince by the British admini- stration. Some of the manuscripts are specifically said to have come from him (e.g. Add. 12281 and 12337), and a statement in a Leiden University Bah ad from the Pakualaman suggests many other volumes in Crawfurd's collection also derive from this source: Tuwan Mister [Crawfurd] asked to be instructed in adat law, with examples of the Javanese usage. -

Javanese language is used by most of the population in Java. But now along with the development of the era, the use of regional languages including Javanese language is to be re- duced especially among the younger generation. One way to help conserve the use of Javanese language is to utilize information technologies, one of them is by developing a text to speech appli- cation that can be used to find out how the pronunciation of Ja- vanese language. In this paper, we discussed the design for Java- nese text to speech applications uses finite state automata. The design result will be used as rules to separate syllables when im- plementing text to speech application. Index Terms—Javanese language; Finite state automata; Text to speech.
