Now, I've read the first chronological book in the Elric series and, I will say, I enjoyed it. These stories can fit into 3 or 4 volumes realistically. Both would appear in later collections with "The Last Enchantment" occasionally retitled "Jesting with Chaos". The story "Elric of Melnibone" was a lot more to my liking! I'm really undecided on this book, on one hand the lack of detail, depth and character development was really refreshing "after several years travelling he arrived" still makes me laugh and on the other hand those same things are extremely frustrating. Readers also enjoyed. Physically weak and frail, the anemic Elric must use drugs special herbs to maintain his health and vitality. It's a weird book. But he also makes mistakes. Craig Russell. Later stories by Moorcock marked Elric as a facet of the Eternal Champion. Part One: Overview Well, I finally did it. This was my favourite story in the book and offers a deeper look into what makes the character so popular. I have several more of these books in my TBR wall, I'll probably dip into them as fillers between meatier tomes but I doubt I'll ever be a fan. There are four stories set in Melnibone--one of which is Moorcock's script for an Elric graphic novel. I'm also not sure if the inclusion of several introductions and essays at the end was necessary. Like the opening essays, I fail to see their point. Women are all portrayed as maidens who need to be rescued and the men are all huge, bulking, seasoned warriors similarly as masculine as Elric himself. Shelve The Handyman. It's Dark Age fantasy. Meet the Eternal Champion and squeeze through the many planes of existence as he tumbles through the Multiverse. After these initial Elric tales, Moorcock periodically published short tales throughout the s and early s, such as 's "The Singing Citadel" and 's "The Jade Man's Eyes". In this entertaining story, Elric is about to succeed to the throne of Melnibone but his cousin Yyrkoon is plotting against him. Other Editions 4. Elric of Melnibone and Other Stories Read Online Banished from the heavens, they now roam the world, from Tantras to far-off Waterdeep, seeking to regain their full powers. Again, I had no personal qualm with this, but some people might. The problem with this edition is the title. As for me, by this point I'm starting to get the feeling that life just won't be giving me the chance to become a fan myself any time soon: the task of tracking down Moorcock's books is monumental and those already in the clique clearly aren't interested in lending us newbie heathens a hand. So there, that was a bit of a shock. There's some junk in the middle that caused me to abandon the book for two years. Elric's albinism appears influenced by Monsieur Zenith , an albino Sexton Blake villain whom Moorcock appreciated enough to write into later multiverse stories. Michael Moorcock is yet another one of those authors who inspired authors whose work I like, but whose actual work I'm not so fond of. The novel is structured almost in the format of an action film, with each "Book" corresponding to one act. His red eyes and white everything else make him almost iconic. The rest are nice to have collected together but fail to make the grade. The Elric story on offer here is top notch, just very short, and this book would have benefitted from more stories and a title which is not misleading.

You see, in what tended to be a vaguely naturalistic setting, players in the game would set forth into the wilds to kill monsters, win treasure, and evade diabolical traps. Poul Anderson described the novel as "one of the most popular things I've ever done, going through many book editions in several languages. At no point did I think that he wasn't going to succeed. Such an enduring piece of fiction has to get 5 stars. However, Holger avoids physically consummating this love — though Alianora wants him to — as he intends to return to the 20th century world he came from.
