All of us having to stay home and social distancing have created a lot of free time for many of us, and the question of what to do with it. For us modelers of the New York Central, the answer has been relatively easy, let’s get to the models! Being retired myself, the change wasn’t as great, but having to stay home has given me opportunities that weren’t available before. The last kit I was working on before I moved from New Jersey to Kentucky was an Accurail USRA style stock car. I dug it back out after 18 months and tried to remember where I was and what I was trying to accomplish with it. Suffice it to say, I had a great time re-doing my research and reviewing the photographs and drawings I was able to find. I was able to bring my ideas about the necessary modifications to make this car closer to the NYC prototype to the Modeling Committee for input. As it is the closest model we could find to a NYC car, we purchased the NYC remaining kits from Accurail for our Collinwood Shop store so we could offer something “new”. Needless to say, they are sold out already! Our Modeling Committee Chair, Seth Lakin, has done all the design work for the double doors that the cars had. If the numbers work, we will see if we can offer them for sale to make it easier to fix this detail. I had to chop my doors up, as the model is a single deck car, and the NYC car is a double deck. I’ve been writing up what I’ve been doing with photos, hopefully you’ll be able to see the result here soon. One other activity that is new to us is the modeling video that several of us “auditioned” for recently. Manuel Duran-Duran brought the idea to us, and it’s been a hit, from what I can tell. The video is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoZ8sFqmvdk If you’ve been operating along these lines, let us know what you’ve been up to, we’d love to share it!
