OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
February 6, 1957
I regret to announce the death in Proctor, Vermont, on February 5, of Dr. Redfield Proctor, '02, ex-governor of Vermont, chairman of the board of Vermont Marble Company, and member of the M.I. T. Corporation. He was 77 years old.
In addition to his distinguished public service and industrial leadership, Redfield Proctor was a wise supporter of our educational institutions. We at M.I. T. shall sorely miss him as an active alumnus, a diligent Life Member of the Corporation, and a warm and ardent sup- porter of the Institute. Students, Faculty, and Administrative Officers all join me in expressing our love and affection for him and our deep sense of loss.
Prominent in New England business, political, and educational service, Dr. Proctor was one of the founders and second president of the New England Council, served in the Vermont General Assembly and State Senate before his election as governor in 1923, was presi- dent of the Vermont Marble Company from 1935 to 1952, and was a lifetime trustee of Middlebury College and former president of the M. I. T. Alumni Association. He held honorary degrees from Middlebury College, Norwich University, and the University of Vermont, and had served as trustee and director of many civic, educational, charitable, and business organizations.
Dr. Proctor is survived by his wife, the former Mary S. Hedrick of Salisbury, N. C.; by two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kelley of Belmont and Mrs. Katharine P. Maynard of New York, and by a son, Robert D., of Brandon. Private funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 7.
J.R. Killian, Jr. President
