Print Program (PDF) Association for Asian Studies CONFERENCE PROGRAM DENVER, COLORADO MARCH 21-24 2019 FLOORPLANS p. 2-4 JEFFERSON MEMORIAL PHOTO CREDIT: COURTESY OF WASHINGTON.ORG WIFI DETAILS Wireless Network: Sheraton Meetings Association for Asian Studies Passcode: aas2019 Annual Conference March 21-24, 2019 Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel Denver, Colorado COVER IMAGE COURTESY OF AAS PRESIDENT, ANNE FELDHAUS The program cover depicts Shivalay, a step-well at Ellora, Maharashtra State, India. It is the “tank” for Ghrishneshvar, one of a set of twelve major Shiva temples scattered around India. Renovated under the patronage of Queen Ahilyabai in 1770 CE, Shivalay has a symmetry and relative simplicity typical of the many religious monuments attributed to this most famous member of the Holkars, a royal family with pastoralist roots. Tourists and Buddhist pilgrims travel from all over the world to the caves near here. Men from nearby villages take water from Shivalay to pour on their village gods on religiously significant days, especially during the monsoon, the season when this photo was taken. The tree that has sprouted in the dome suggests that nature is stronger than our human creations, while the crumpled sign on the dome evokes worries that plastic might ultimately overtake even nature. Annual Conference Program, Volume 70. The Annual Conference Program is published annually by the Association for Asian Studies, Inc. It is printed in February and distributed to all conference attendees. ABSTRACT Science and technology have been paramount features of any modernized nation. In Japan they played an important role in the modernization and militarization of the nation, as well as its democratization and subsequent economic growth. Science and technology highlight the promises of a better tomorrow and future utopia, but their application can also present ethical issues. In fiction, they have historically played a significant role. Fictions of science continue to exert power via important multimedia platforms for considerations of the role of science and technology in our world. And, because of their importance for the development, ideologies and policies of any nation, these considerations can be correlated with the deliberation of the role of a nation in the world, including its internal and external images and imaginings.

The Globalization of Chinese Food ANTHROPOLOGY OF ASIA SERIES Series Editor: Grant Evans, University ofHong Kong Asia today is one ofthe most dynamic regions ofthe world. The previously predominant image of 'timeless peasants' has given way to the image of fast-paced business people, mass consumerism and high-rise urban conglomerations. Yet much discourse remains entrenched in the polarities of 'East vs. West', 'Tradition vs. Change'. This series hopes to provide a forum for anthropological studies which break with such polarities. It will publish titles dealing with cosmopolitanism, cultural identity, representa tions, arts and performance. The complexities of urban Asia, its elites, its political rituals, and its families will also be explored. A Call to Look Past An Ecomodernist Manifesto: A Degrowth Critique Authors and Endorsers: Jeremy Caradonna, Iris Borowy, Tom Green, Peter A. Victor, Maurie Cohen, Andrew Gow, Anna Ignatyeva, Matthias Schmelzer, Philip Vergragt, Josefin Wangel, Jessica Dempsey, Robert Orzanna, Sylvia Lorek, Julian Axmann, Rob Duncan, Richard B. Norgaard, Halina S. Brown, Richard Heinberg One of the counties within the province of sustainable development is now called “ecomodernism,” and it has come to prominence over the past few years, in part because of the figures associated with it, including prominent environmental thinkers such as Ted Nordhaus, Michael Shellenberger, and Stewart Brand. The New York Times recently praised the ecomodernist message in an article called, misleadingly, “A Call to Look Past Sustainable Development.”i Why is the article’s title so misleading? For the simple reason that the figures within ecomodernism want cultural and economic change that is sustainable, just like the rest of us; they simply want to move the focus of development in a new direction, even though this “new” direction seems surprisingly and troublingly conventional at times. The New York Times article mentions a new statement of principles that the ecomodernists published this year. It is called An Ecomodernist Manifesto (2015) and is co-authored by eighteen leading lights of the sustainability movement, including Nordhaus, Shellenberger, and Brand, but also the physicist David Keith, the scientist, Nobel Prize Winner, and Indian economist Joyashree Roy, and

Accordingly, we carried on a research on modern fashion design, with having important cultural inheritance value and design significance for modern dress. Keywords: Han costume, elements, modern fashion design, features 1. Introduction Hanfu, also known as "Hanzhuang" or "Huafu", is namely national costume of Han Chinese people. The concept of Hanfu is distinguished from the broader concept of traditional Chinese clothing. The ancient Chinese called Hanfu as Yiguan. The succession of Hanfu elements in fashion is called as the fashion localization with Hanfu elements, also known as modern Han-style fashion.
