(040) 853 88 888 ∙ www.fkpscorpio.com PRESSEMITTEILUNG 02.12.2019 Bombay Bicycle Club kommen endlich mit ihrem neuen Album im Gepäck nach Deutschland Die Band um die Sänger und Gitarristen Jack Steadman und Jamie MacColl, Bassist Ed Nash und Drummer Suren de Saram schaffte es mit ihrem vierten Album „So Long, See You Tomorrow“ bis auf Platz 1 der britischen Charts. Der Titel war im Rückblick durchaus prophetisch zu lesen, denn nach anderthalb Jahren auf Tour beschlossen sie nach einem ehrlichen Gespräch in einem Pub – wie Engländer das so machen – eine Pause einzulegen. Auch wenn es als solche kommuniziert wurde, war allen klar: Das war’s. Aber das Leben hatte einen anderen Plan. 2017 traf man sich, um eine einzelne Show für das zehnjährige Jubiläum des Debüts „I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose“ anzugehen. Wieder gab es diverse Pub-Abende – und dann die langsam durchsickernde Erkenntnis: „Eigentlich haben wir doch noch Bock auf eine neue Runde.“ Das hört man dem im Januar erscheinenden neuen Album „Everything Else Has Gone Wrong“ nun an. Melancholie und Euphorie sind noch immer spontan arrangiert, die Texte deep wie eh und je, die Melodien überraschend, die Indie-Hits vorhanden. Man höre nur das wundervolle “Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)”, die erste gemeinsame Single seit 4 Jahren. Zum Glück haben die Herren auch auf das Touren wieder Bock. Hier kann man sie im Frühjahr 2020 live erleben. One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

Vol. 3 Issue 13 CSUMB Student-Run Newspaper Feb. 6, 2020 CSUMB communities continue to build at the Otter Showcase Story and photos by Sydney Brown Hundreds of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) students and staff members attended the university’s semi-annual Otter Showcase on Jan. 29. Dozens of student-run clubs, associations and organizations had booths spread across all of CSUMB’s Main Quad to display their values and interests to students. The organizations at the Otter Showcase ranged from sororities and fraternities to cultural, artistic and athletic groups. New member of the Disc Golf team, Christain Chan, was tabling for his sports club during the event. Chan started playing last semester after the sports club president, Dustin Johnson, introduced it during pledging in a CSUMB fraternity. “I fell in love instantly,” Chan said. Chan’s teammate, Michael Renfro, has been playing disc golf for 10 years prior to attending CSUMB. Renfro was “excited to look for the club after finding the two disc golf courses on campus,” and “happy to find CSUMB offers a one-credit disc golf P.E. course.” The team placed a disc golf basket on the Main Quad’s grass area during the event, where many students had fun trying to putt discs into the basket and play the game. Across the quad, the Asian and Pacific Islander Association laid out various instruments and garments that represented their clubs cultural values. A club member of four years, Michael Vang, said their association “focuses on culture and community.” “There is less than 10 percent of Asain and Pacific Islanders in the area,” Vang said.
