As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

    Vol. 3 Issue 13 CSUMB Student-Run Newspaper Feb. 6, 2020 CSUMB communities continue to build at the Otter Showcase Story and photos by Sydney Brown Hundreds of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) students and staff members attended the university’s semi-annual Otter Showcase on Jan. 29. Dozens of student-run clubs, associations and organizations had booths spread across all of CSUMB’s Main Quad to display their values and interests to students. The organizations at the Otter Showcase ranged from sororities and fraternities to cultural, artistic and athletic groups. New member of the Disc Golf team, Christain Chan, was tabling for his sports club during the event. Chan started playing last semester after the sports club president, Dustin Johnson, introduced it during pledging in a CSUMB fraternity. “I fell in love instantly,” Chan said. Chan’s teammate, Michael Renfro, has been playing disc golf for 10 years prior to attending CSUMB. Renfro was “excited to look for the club after finding the two disc golf courses on campus,” and “happy to find CSUMB offers a one-credit disc golf P.E. course.” The team placed a disc golf basket on the Main Quad’s grass area during the event, where many students had fun trying to putt discs into the basket and play the game. Across the quad, the Asian and Pacific Islander Association laid out various instruments and garments that represented their clubs cultural values. A club member of four years, Michael Vang, said their association “focuses on culture and community.” “There is less than 10 percent of Asain and Pacific Islanders in the area,” Vang said.

    Official Site | Facebook! | Twitter It might seem odd to describe Bombay Bicycle Club as veterans given that nobody in the band is old- er than 24, but this is the London quartet's fourth album, each one more successful than the last, which is a notable achievement in today's climate of rapid ascents and sudden declines. Their steady rise is something that rarely happens anymore – a band given space by their label, Island, to evolve unpre- dictably with each release and !take their audience with them. 'So Long, See You Tomorrow' is their richest, boldest and most euphoric album yet, and their first UK number one. This autumn, following a string of international festival appearances including Glaston- bury, Reading/Leeds, Latitude, Fuji Rocks and Lollapalooza, the band will play their first ever UK arena date at London's Earls Court. They have a healthy, ever-growing following in continental Europe and the US, too, with all of their dates having sold out. The more risks Bombay Bicycle Club take, the bigger they get.!
