During a single month last year, America witnessed two of the most horrific shooting attacks against law enforcement in recent memory. On July 7,Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed Dallas police officers during a peaceful protest against police brutality, killing five officers and wounding nine others. Both Johnson and Long were reportedly motivated by their strong dislike of law enforcement, grievances against perceived white dominance, and the recent fatal police shootings of unarmed black men under questionable circumstances, specifically the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling of Baton Rouge and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. Although many Americans were understandably upset and angry over the deaths of Sterling and Castile, killing others as retribution is certainly not justified. Authorities would later learn that Johnson and Long had Fall to black hate groups. That same month, six Christian churches in St. Louis, Missouri, were either burned or vandalized. As details developed about the Dallas, Baton Rouge and St. Louis attacks, it was apparent that a domestic terrorist threat had re-emerged — a threat not seen since the s. This cluster of attacks would later signify the return of the violent Black Nationalist. This makes black nationalism categorically different than white nationalism, in that black extremism is a reaction to real and brutal oppression. Regardless, and Rebirth of the Islamic State groups and individuals in this movement promote explicitly racist and bigoted ideas. Black Nationalists have also advocated for a separate territory for African Americans within the country similar to white nationalists who argue for a white homeland in the Pacific Northwest. According to their propaganda, Black Nationalists would like a portion of the Southeast United States reserved for a black nation. And Rebirth of the Islamic State, they are known for their antigovernment and anti-police sentiments due to their long-held views on government corruption and police brutality. Given the historical treatment of black people in the U. Among Fall things, they believe wrongly that Jews ran the slave trade. Some Fall Holocaust deniers. Similar to other hate groups, some Black Nationalist groups conduct prison outreach programs to recruit inmates into their extremist cause. Some have also been known to recruit street gang members. Micah Johnson and Fall Long were not simply motivated by hate, they subscribed and Rebirth of the Islamic State a radical belief system seeking social and political change. For example, Johnson was motivated to shoot 14 police officers not only Black Flags: The Rise avenge perceived unjustified killings of unarmed black men, but also to bring increased attention to these killings and, perhaps, change and Rebirth of the Islamic State policy. Johnson was later linked to Black Nationalism and Rebirth of the Islamic State his racist rhetoric and photos posted to social media. Similarly, Gavin Long espoused antigovernment beliefs and affiliated with the Washitaw Nation, a Moorish sovereign citizen group comprised mostly of African Americans. Moorish sovereign citizens, like Long, do not recognize the authority of law enforcement or other government officials. Long regularly spoke of perceived police brutality on his social media accounts and chose to retaliate Fall the police, a symbolic target, as a result of his extremist views. The NYPD officers were sitting in their marked patrol car when the shooter, Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, came up to the passenger side window and opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol. Both officers died instantly after being shot multiple times in their heads and upper bodies. Brinsley boasted on social media hours earlier that he wanted to murder cops in revenge Fall the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner who died during a struggle with police in New York City. Brinsley later killed himself. On July 30,in response to the suspicious deaths of Walter Scott, Freddie Gray and Sandra Bland, Farrakhan issued what amounts to a call to violence during a speech at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. More recently, another violent Black Nationalist lashed out at innocent civilians a week after killing a security guard at a motel. Kori Ali Muhammad mortally wounded three white males during a targeted shooting spree in Fresno, California, on April 18, Since many Black Nationalist groups have splintered from the NOI, they too use these terms in their extremist propaganda and rhetoric. They attract violent individuals whom they indoctrinate, like Johnson, Long, Brinsley and Muhammad, encouraging criminal activity and violence. These aspects of Islam are appealing to Black Nationalists seeking racial separatism and sovereignty. Of particular concern to law enforcement, some Black Nationalists have expressed support for al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. Calloway had Black Flags: The Rise expressed hatred toward white people and wanted to attack law enforcement. Some group members reportedly had ties to Moorish-affiliated groups. In this respect, Black Nationalism may Fall as a gateway to foreign-based extremism and international terrorism. The surge of Black Nationalism can be attributed to current social, economic and political factors Fall the past decade or more. Sincethe number of Black Nationalist groups in the United States has jumped dramatically from 48 groups to in InBlack Nationalism increased in response to the recent rise Black Flags: The Rise White Nationalism. Inanother trend Fall coincides with the increased media attention covering fatal police shootings of unarmed black men throughout the country. Johnson, Long, Brinsley, and Muhammad made mention of such events before carrying out their deadly shooting attacks. Of further concern, some Black Nationalists have shown interest in bomb-making and manufacturing explosives. In Novembertwo Black Nationalists were arrested for plotting to detonate explosives during protests in Ferguson, Missouri, in response to the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown earlier that year. Another recent example includes a Moorish sovereign citizen who was injured while building a bomb to be used in an armored car robbery in Columbus, Ohio, during April Some Black Nationalists have even carried semi-automatic shotguns, bolt-action sniper rifles, and modified AR assault rifles under the guise of self-defense at these protests, which points to an escalation in Black Nationalist tactics. Other contributing factors to the increase of Black Nationalism in the U. For example, the attempts to institute a travel ban for six Muslim countries, calls to increase the fight against Islamic extremists abroad, changes to the U. The U. This was the first year that GTD tracked U. It was also the deadliest year for domestic terrorist attacks prior to the Oklahoma And Rebirth of the Islamic State bombing against U. Violent Black Nationalists carried out 28 of the 31 fatal attacks against police officers in the U. InBlack Nationalists killed eight officers, wounding 12 others, in only two shooting attacks. The Black Nationalist Movement represents a swath of antigovernment, anti-police, racist, and radical religious ideologies. While organized groups have Fall from violence, they attract adherents e. As a result, lone individuals prone to violence who are affiliated with Black Nationalism, pose a potential threat to law enforcement, government officials and others. Like other domestic extremists, the merging of antigovernment, racist and religious extremist ideologies is cause for concern. Historically, this convergence of extremist beliefs serves as a catalyst for radicalization and mobilization towards violent action for some members and Rebirth of the Islamic State affiliates. The following list of groups represents the more prominent organizations within the Black Nationalist movement in the United States today. Founded in by Elijah Muhammad deceasedthe group is the ideological precursor to many Black Nationalist movements. It claims to be an Islamic movement but embraces a radical viewpoint of Islam that does not adhere to core Islamic tenets. Its ideology draws heavily upon the Black Flags: The Rise of the NOI and Rebirth of the Islamic State, which advocates political, economic, social and cultural separation from whites. The group is highly bigoted and publicly outspoken regarding its racist and anti-Semitic views. Dallas shooter Micah Johnson was supposedly ousted by Quannel X because of his radical views and perceived mental instability. NBPN is known for organizing rallies and protests. The group is currently led by Dawah Yisrael. NBLM members are known to participate in rallies and protests often arming themselves with long gunsbut have yet to engage in violence. It embraces a black supremacist, rather than a separatist, ideology, and adheres to a radical brand of Islam that claims that black men represent God. Five Percenters claim they are not accountable to anyone. BHI adherents believe they are divinely empowered by God with superiority. Some BHI adherents have been prone to violence, which they feel is justified by God, as long as it helps rid the world of evil. BHI street preachers are often aggressive and very intimidating to onlookers, because they use racial epithets and shout at people. The Moorish Nation, primarily comprised of African Americans, is a loose-knit network of independent groups that arose in the early s as an offshoot of the antigovernment Sovereign Citizens Movement. They borrowed concepts from the Sovereign Citizens Movement and applied them to their African heritage. Moorish adherents have come into conflict with U. Search splcenter. August 08, Daryl Johnson. When he succeeded his father inKing Abdullah of Jordan released a Black Flags: The Rise of political prisoners in the hopes of smoothing his transition to power. Little did he know that among those released was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a man who would go on to become a terrorist mastermind too dangerous even for al-Qaeda and give rise to an Islamist movement bent on dominating the Middle East. Zarqawi began by directing hotel bombings and assassinations in Jordan from a base and Rebirth of the Islamic State northern Iraq, but it was the American invasion of that country in that catapulted him to the head of a vast insurgency. By identifying him as the link between Saddam and bin Laden, the CIA inadvertently created a monster. Like-minded radicals saw him as a hero Black Flags: The Rise the infidel occupiers and rallied to his cause. Their wave of brutal beheadings and suicide bombings continued for years until Jordanian intelligence provided the Americans with the crucial intelligence needed to eliminate Zarqawi in a airstrike. He said nothing significantly different from newspaper reporting in the U. I and Rebirth of the Islamic State already familiar with what the newspapers had reported, and found his account rehashed old ground. Cockburn's analysis, on the other hand, rips open ME politics and exposes U. This book probably is not going to answer your questions. I am furious that we don't have the kind of journalism about the Middle East that they apparently have in Europe. Perhaps our journalists are trying too hard to protect their government sources and American business interests. Can it be? I leave this at three stars simply because I would never have gotten to, nor understood as well, Cockburn's far better material without slogging through Warrick's introductory material and discussing it with others. Warrick undoubtedly knows Cockburn. Why the heck couldn't he have included and credited some of Cockburn's information in his analysis? Just this week Oct we learned that al-Baghdadi was targeted in an air strike as he convoyed to a meeting of senior ISIS leaders in western Iraq. It is not known if he has been wounded or killed. I would be happy never to hear or read the name Zarqawi again, but here he is in the pages of this book. He gained credibility and became a household name the world over when American forces labelled him Black Flags: The Rise threat injust before the American invasion of Iraq. After his death his organization, which had attracted many followers amongst the Sunni minority in Iraq, lost its thrust and seemed on the point of disintegration. They continued to consolidate, now with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gradually rising to third in the leadership in charge of Sharia law by In an airstrike took out the other two top leaders, leaving Baghdadi to step into the vacuum and impose his own vision on the men under his command. He announced ISIS involvement in Syria in with a carefully shot and edited quarter-hour video heralded on Black Flags: The Rise websites for days before its release. Warrick shows us how the radical insurgent movement could have begun, given impetus through a combination of American bombs and Arab prisons. Western ideology and invasion is an undeniable spur to Islamists of any sort, who resist any foreign influence and incursion into their lands, whether or not bombing was meant to help. Warrick adds Arab jails because this is where Zarqawi got his instruction and indoctrination. Inmates were segregated by creed, and the Islamists lived by Sharia law. Jails became, in effect, jihadi universities which helped extremists inculcate moderates, and fueled the insurgency inside the wire. Baghdadi survived and thrived in prison. He was picked up in a sweep in early and sent to the American-administered jail called Camp Bucca. His academic expertise as a conservative, educated religious scholar gave him stature. He both taught and spoke classical Arabic and led religious prayers. When he was released in after ten months in prison, he finished earning his doctorate in Islamic studies and gravitated to the militants operating outside the major cities. By he was third in the leadership of radicals in charge of Sharia law and when an American airstrike took out two of the top leaders in lateal Baghdadi stepped up. Death by burning is something forbidden in the Koran—a retribution something only Allah can presume. There must be a reason an And Rebirth of the Islamic State scholar would order such a death, but the effect was galvanizing. We can only hope that fire will consume them in the end. It was not this book alone, but my concurrent reading of a book of essays by Mohsin Hamid called Discontent and Its Civilizations that started the beginnings of a breakthrough in the development of my own opinion about American power in the world. America cooperated with Pakistan, in a manner of speaking, for a time. Calling upon their superior forces may just wipe out what you were hoping Black Flags: The Rise save. American military power is a blunt instrument, no matter what they say about precision strikes. Add to that American reluctance to involve their own blood or treasure in a fight they do not perceive as their own. Better not to wish for American military might, for Black Flags: The Rise way lies destruction. Why must we learn this lesson again and again? Because the wise are dead, I suspect. It is painful to contemplate the future when one has no faith in discourse, arms, or aid. Malhotra reads slowly enough for us to grasp the complicated connections he relates, and reads the Arabic names with comprehension and precision. Great job on narration. View all 22 comments. Three other French soldiers were killed in these sorties, and the others fled back to the citadel after their officers fell. Garnier's death shocked the French public and ended the first French adventure in Tonkin. Ten years later, with France again pushing into Tonkin, undeclared hostilities broke out in and the first half of as a prelude to the Sino-French War. The Black Flags fought several engagements against French forces in Tonkin. It was a swift and striking victory for the Black Flag Army. Even with large Chinese and Vietnamese and Rebirth of the Islamic State contingents at Son Tay, the Black Flag Army Fall the brunt of the fighting, and took very heavy casualties.
