KTAZ Request For Engineering STA

Field tests conducted on December 1 and 3, 2018 after construction of the channel 29 repack facility authorized in construction permit LMS file number 0000034901 for NBC License LLC’s station KTAZ, Facility ID 81458, licensed to Phoenix, AZ showed signal levels in Phoenix weaker than predicted. Analysis of field measurement data indicated the antenna pattern was likely rotated 180 degrees from the authorized pattern. The antenna was installed correctly using the main beam axis of symmetry marking on the antenna, but a review by the antenna manufacturer showed the marking itself was not correct and the antenna pattern was indeed rotated 180 degrees from the intended orientation.

KTAZ is operating with the , antenna height, and antenna location specified in the channel 29 construction permit. The antenna pattern is correct with the exception that it is rotated 180 degrees.

As shown on the attached map, the rotated antenna pattern provides a community grade contour over Phoenix, the community of license. A TVStudy analysis showed no interference from the rotated antenna to adjacent channel stations KUAT-TV D30 in Tucson or KUAS-TV D28 in Tucson or to any other full power or Class A authorization.

The antenna manufacturer is working to have the antenna rotated on the tower to the correct orientation. Contingent on local permitting, coordination with other broadcasters, and tower crew availability, it is expected that the antenna manufacturer will have the antenna rotated to the correct orientation within 60 days.
