During this half century, the population of the nation has increased from seventy-six millionto one hundred forty-five million. In 1900, we were predominantlya rural people. In 1950 we are more nearly a nation of city dwellers, and every decadesees a further movement from country to city. In 1900, the high school enrollment of the UnitedStates was five hundred fifty thousand. In 1950, the high school enrollment is ten times five hundred fifty thousand. In 1900, the person who ownedan automobile was for that reason a conspicuous individual in any community. Today auto- mobiles are farmore numerous than horse-drawn vehicles were half a century ago. In 1900, therewere neither airplanes, nor radio, nor home refrigerators, nor farm tractors,nor automatic home heating, nor electric sweepers, nor motion pictures,nor DDT, nor penicillin, nor vitamin pills. There was no profession of psychiatry, nor a relativity theory, nor communism,nor enfranchised women, nor easy divorce, nor common international travel, nor the after- math of two world wars, nor atomic bombs. The half century of the existence of Central Association has seen almost nation-wide raising of the compulsory education age limit. School curriculums have been expanded, enriched, and improved. The number of modern, well-equipped school vii _ viii A Half Centuryof Teaching buildings has greatlyincreased: Healthprograms, counselling programs, testingprograms, athletic programs,survey programs, and socialprograms have been added. The above paragraphs are a brief and incompleteenumera- tion of the materialand social changeswhich are the back- ground against whichCentral Associationof Science and Mathematics Teachershas developed. New philosophiesand newstatements of old philosophies of education have arisen during this halfcentury, some tosur- vive and win acceptance, some to make theircontribution and then becomea page of history. Every material andsocial change of thesefifty years has added new problemsfor education ingeneral and for mathe- matics and scienceteachers in particular.Ho'w clearly have members of Central Association of Science andMathematics Teachersseen these problems? How carefullyhave we analyzed and evaluated them? How wiselyhave we planned fortheir solution? Howcourageously havewe contended for improve- ment? With whatvision havewe planned for the future? What sacrifices of time,thought,*andmoney have we made in order thatour program might be effective? These aresome of the questions whichwe pose for ourselves in this volume. We spreadhere the recordso that he who runs may read. We read it withsome pride and some regret, pride in our achievements andregret for our failures. Theexperimental method of science rapidlygained popular approval andac- ceptance. A goldenage of sciencea phenomenon of western civilizationwas at hand. This rapid growth and publicacceptance of science, coupled with a rapid increase in theenrollment of secondary schools, stimulatednew development in the teaching of mathematics and the sciences. Central Association of PhysicsTeachers On the crest of thiswave of scientific interest and emphasis, a group of physics teachers from schools in the CentralStates met in Chicago in the spring of 1902to consider the organiza- tion of an association of physics teachers.A committee of three was appointed which, after further consideration of the matter, called a meeting to be heldin Chicago, June 7. Twenty-five schools were representedat this general meeting. It was a busi- ness meeting with no program of papers, and here itwas that an organization entitled the Central Association of Physics Teachers was formed. Sci., Univ. of New Mexico, Gallup, USA 3Independent Researcher, USA Abstract In this paper, we explore the reasons why Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify gravitation theory and electromagnetism failed and outline a plausible resolution of this problem. The latter is based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorem and Newton’s aether stream model. Keywords: Unification, gravitation, electromagnetism, Hilbert, resolution. Introduction Hilbert and Einstein were in race at 1915 to develop a new gravitation theory based on covariance principle [1]. While Einstein seemed to win the race at the time, Hilbert produced two communications which show that he was ahead of Einstein in term of unification of gravitation theory and electromagnetic theory. Hilbert started with Mie’s electromagnetic theory. However, as Mie theory became completely failed, so was the Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify those two theories [1]. Einstein might be learning from such an early failure of Hilbert to unify those theories, and years later returned to Mie theory [1]. What we would say here is that Hilbert’s axiomatic failure can be explained by virtue of Gödel’s incompleteness theorem: which says essentially that any attempt to build a consistent theory based on axiomatic foundations can be shown to be inconsistent.

In the future they will look back to relativity with equal disbelief as to the "Earth is flat" concept. The relativity theory not only goes against common sense, as Tesla already said in 1932, a fundamental thinking error has been made by Maxwell in his equations. This eventually lead to the erroneous relativity theory, as is proven in this article. The unconventional correspondence between physicists Albert Einstein and Felix Ehrenhaft, especially at the height of the alleged production by the latter of magnetic monopoles, is examined in the following paper. Almost unknown by the general public, it is sometimes witty, yet it can be pathetic, and certainly bewildering. At one point the arguments they exchanged became a poetic duel between Einstein and Ehrenhaft’s wife. Ignored by conventional Einstein biographies, this episode took place during the initial years of the Second World War, but was rooted in disputes dating back to the early years of the twentieth century. The interesting intersection of a series of scientific controversies also highlights some aspects of the personal dramas involved, and after so many years the whole affair in itself is still intriguing. The issues in the Ehrenhaft–Einstein epistolary Science has now practically forgotten the polemic figure of Felix Albert Ehrenhaft (1879–1952), an Austrian physicist who in the 1900s and 1910s assumed the existence of electric charges smaller than the electron, based on his experimental work. Three decades later, Ehrenhaft came up with what appeared to be another heresy, insisting that he had observed isolated magnetic poles. He maintained a correspondence with Albert Einstein on these subjects for about thirty years, trying to convince Einstein of the validity of his arguments, while Einstein attacked Ehrenhaft’s conclusions, but followed his experimental work.

    Appendix Biographical Notes Bursian, Viktor Robertovich (1886–1945), a Russian and Soviet theoretical physi- cist. He worked on a range of physical problems, firstly using classical, then later quantum physics from 1918 to 1932 under Joffe at the Physico-Technical Insti- tute in Leningrad (LFTI). From 1932 until his arrest in 1936 “for participation in a fascist-Trotskyite-Zinovievite organization” he was professor then director of the Scientific-Research Institute of Physics at Leningrad University. He carried out work in mineral prospecting in the 1920s, one of the founders of the technique of electrical geo-exploration. For more details see Bursian (1988). Bursian was sentenced in 1937 by the Supreme Military Court to 10 years in a labor camp, which he spent in the technical special office of the NKVD carrying out thermal calculations. Egorshin, Vasilii Petrovich (1898–1985), born into a peasant family, joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party in 1915. After the revolution in 1921 he taught courses at Moscow University and from 1924 taught physics at the Communist University. Like Hessen he then studied at the IKP. He also joined the Deborin group, but turned against them in the late 1920s. Fock, Vladimir Aleksandrovich (1898–1974), a major Soviet theoretical physicist, known internationally for his foundational work in quantum mechanics and QED, where he introduced key mathematical concepts such as Fock space. Marble discusses his undergraduate and early graduate study at Case School of Applied Science, his work at the NACA Engine Research Lab in Cleveland, where he was in charge of large-engine research project for B-26 bomber, and his arrival at Caltech in 1946 to complete his doctoral degree in 1948. He discusses his graduate students, including Benoit Mandelbrot and Chuang Feng-kan, his colleagues Clark Millikan, Hans Liepmann, Duncan Rannie, and Arthur Erdélyi; and the beginning of his close and enduring friendship with Theodore von Kármán. Recalls his first visit to Europe in 1949, his meeting with Moe Berg in Switzerland, and his appointment that same year as the first new faculty member of Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Center, and the group of courses in jet propulsion he developed for the Center. Introduction Hilbert and Einstein were in race at 1915 to develop a new gravitation theory based on covariance principle [1]. While Einstein seemed to win the race at the time, Hilbert produced two communications which show that he was ahead of Einstein in term of unification of gravitation theory and electromagnetic theory. Hilbert started with Mie’s electromagnetic theory. However, as Mie theory became completely failed, so was the Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify those two theories [1].
