Sci., Univ. of New Mexico, Gallup, USA 3Independent Researcher, USA Abstract In this paper, we explore the reasons why Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify gravitation theory and electromagnetism failed and outline a plausible resolution of this problem. The latter is based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorem and Newton’s aether stream model. Keywords: Unification, gravitation, electromagnetism, Hilbert, resolution. Introduction Hilbert and Einstein were in race at 1915 to develop a new gravitation theory based on covariance principle [1]. While Einstein seemed to win the race at the time, Hilbert produced two communications which show that he was ahead of Einstein in term of unification of gravitation theory and electromagnetic theory. Hilbert started with Mie’s electromagnetic theory. However, as Mie theory became completely failed, so was the Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify those two theories [1]. Einstein might be learning from such an early failure of Hilbert to unify those theories, and years later returned to Mie theory [1]. What we would say here is that Hilbert’s axiomatic failure can be explained by virtue of Gödel’s incompleteness theorem: which says essentially that any attempt to build a consistent theory based on axiomatic foundations can be shown to be inconsistent. -

Last week the newspapers were filled with the discovery of "impossible" particles traveling faster than the speed of light. A month ago an "impossible" star was discovered and earlier the Pioneer space probes also refused to adhere to the law. This way, the scientific establishment will slowly but surely be forced to return to reality, the reality of the existence of a real, physical ether with fluid-like properties. The inevitable result of that will be that Einstein’s relativity theory will go down in the history books as one of the biggest fallacies ever brought forth by science. In the future they will look back to relativity with equal disbelief as to the "Earth is flat" concept. The relativity theory not only goes against common sense, as Tesla already said in 1932, a fundamental thinking error has been made by Maxwell in his equations. This eventually lead to the erroneous relativity theory, as is proven in this article. Jones, founded the Acoustical Society of America (1928), organized and served as the first director of what is now the Naval Undersea Research and Development Center in San Diego, and worked as a acoustical consultant for various projects including the Hollywood Bowl, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Schoenberg Hall, the United Nations General Assembly building, and a variety of radio and motion picture studios. The collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, galley proofs, and other material related to Knudsen's professional activities. The collection also includes the papers of Leo Peter Delsasso, John Mead Adams, and Edgar Lee Kinsey. -

In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." Kimball Harvey Fletcher and Henry Eyring: Men of Faith and Science The year 1981 saw the deaths of Harvey Fletcher and Henry Eyring, men of great religious faith whose superb professional achievements placed them in the first ranks of the nation's scientists. (See Steven H. Heath's "The Reconcilia- tion of Faith and Science: Henry Eyring's Achievement," this issue.) Both could be said to have had simple religious faith — not because they were un- complicated people incapable of subtlety, but because their religious character was early and firmly grounded in a few fundamentals. This freed them from a life of continuing doubt and struggle. The two men, seventeen years apart in age, had a kind of family relation- ship. Henry Eyring's uncle Carl Eyring (after whom BYU's Eyring Science Center is named) married Fern Chipman; Harvey Fletcher married her sister Lorena. After their spouses died, Harvey Fletcher and Fern Chipman Eyring married. As a result, Henry Eyring called him Uncle Harvey. But that was not unique. Nearly everyone else did, too. Harvey Fletcher was born in 1884 in a little frame house in Provo, Utah. Among his memories are attending the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple and shaking President Wilford Woodruff's hand. As a young boy, he recited a short poem at a program in the Provo Tabernacle; and after he finished, Karl G. Maeser, principal of the Brigham Young Academy, stopped him before he could resume his seat, put his hand on Harvey's head, and said, "I want this congregation to know that this little boy will one day be a great man." Instead of being pleased, Harvey was bothered; he perceived it as a prediction of politi- cal leadership, which he did not want. -

Doig Research Professor in Government, Dartmouth College; Professor Emeritus, Princeton University Abstract As the Luddite protests in the 19th Century and resistance in the 20th Century to building nuclear power plants illustrate, technological change often generates powerful public opposition. In some instances, however, scientific strategies, joined with sustained pressure from well-placed supporters, can be used to ameliorate the worst effects of technological change - as the case described below illustrates. When Pan Am tried to introduce jet planes for travel in the US and across the Atlantic, it generated a battle that lasted more than two years. The public agency that operated all three major airports in the New York region - the Port Authority - had been designed to encourage its officials to emphasize scientifically based analysis in setting policy; and the agency's leader, Austin Tobin, had developed a strong reputation for political independence and integrity. He also had previous encounters with the airlines, described below, leading him to be suspicious of their assertion that jet planes were not unduly noisy. Therefore, to test jet noise, he recruited the nation's premier acoustical engineer, Leo Beranek, and when Beranek concluded that jets were perceived to be much louder than expected, the aircraft industry fought back, challenging the findings, appealing to federal officials, and alleging that Tobin might be corrupt. After two years of conflict, the airplane industry capitulated, and in a few years the standards developed for the New York airports were embraced by airport managers across the United States and Europe. -
