AIAA Fellows The first 23 Fellows of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (I) were elected on 31 January 1934. They were: Joseph S. Ames, Karl Arnstein, Lyman J. Briggs, Charles H. Chatfield, Walter S. Diehl, Donald W. Douglas, Hugh L. Dryden, C.L. Egtvedt, Alexander Klemin, Isaac Laddon, George Lewis, Glenn L. Martin, Lessiter C. Milburn, Max Munk, John K. Northrop, Arthur Nutt, Sylvanus Albert Reed, Holden C. Richardson, Igor I. Sikorsky, Charles F. Taylor, Theodore von Kármán, Fred Weick, Albert Zahm. Dr. von Kármán also had the distinction of being the first Fellow of the American Rocket Society (A) when it instituted the grade of Fellow member in 1949. The following year the ARS elected as Fellows: C.M. Bolster, Louis Dunn, G. Edward Pendray, Maurice J. Zucrow, and Fritz Zwicky. Fellows are persons of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology thereof. A special Fellow Grade Committee reviews Associate Fellow nominees from the membership and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors, which makes the final selections. Professor Helen Quinn
Professor Helen Quinn Helen Quinn was born in Australia and grew up in the Melbourne suburbs of Blackburn and Mitcham. She attended Tintern Girls Grammar School in Ringwood East. She matriculated successfully and obtained a cadetship from the Australian Department of Meteorology to fund her studies at the University of Melbourne. After beginning her undergraduate studies at the University, her family migrated to San Francisco in the early 1960s. Professor Quinn finished her undergraduate, and eventually graduate education at Stanford University. After receiving her doctorate from Stanford in 1967, she held a postdoctoral position at Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, then served as a research fellow at Harvard in 1971, joining the faculty there in 1972. She returned to Stanford in 1976 as a visitor on a Sloan Fellowship and joined the staff at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC) in 1977. In her current position as a theoretical physicist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Professor Quinn has made important contributions towards unifying the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions into a single coherent model of particle physics. In 2000 she was awarded the Dirac Medal and Prize for pioneering contributions to the quest for a unified theory of quarks and leptons and of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. The award, shared with Professors Howard Georgi of Harvard and Jogesh Pati of the University of Maryland, recognized Professor Quinn for her work on the unification of the three interactions, and for fundamental insights about charge-parity conservation. She has also recently developed basic analysis methods used to search for the origin of particle-antiparticle asymmetry in nature. -

May 20, 2016 Implement the Endangered Species Act Using the Best Available Science To: Secretary Sally Jewell and Secretary Penny Prtizker We, the under-signed scientists, recommend the U.S. government place species conservation policy on firmer scientific footing by following the procedure described below for using the best available science. A recent survey finds that substantial numbers of scientists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration believe that political influence at their agency is too high.i Further, recent species listing and delisting decisions appear misaligned with scientific understanding.ii,iii,iv,v,vi For example, in its nationwide delisting decision for gray wolves in 2013, the FWS internal review failed the best science test when reviewed by an independent peer-review panel.vii Just last year, a FWS decision not to list the wolverine ran counter to the opinions of agency and external scientists.viii We ask that the Departments of the Interior and Commerce make determinations under the Endangered Species Actix only after they make public the independent recommendations from the scientific community, based on the best available science. The best available science comes from independent scientists with relevant expertise who are able to evaluate and synthesize the available science, and adhere to standards of peer-review and full conflict-of-interest disclosure. We ask that agency scientific recommendations be developed with external review by independent scientific experts. There are several mechanisms by which this can happen; however, of greatest importance is that an independent, external, and transparent science-based process is applied consistently to both listing and delisting decisions. -

Garwin at Celebrating an Exemplary Life September 19, 2005 Cornell University I recount1 some early interactions I had with Hans, beginning in 1951. Hans had led the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos from 1943 to 1945, and despite his antagonism to the hydrogen bomb, was willing to turn his talents to learning whether it could be done or not, which was his role when we interacted in the summer of 1951. In May of 1951 my wife and I and our infant son went to Los Alamos for the second summer, where I would continue to work mostly on nuclear weapons. I was at that time an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago and had spent the summer of 1950 at the Los Alamos Laboratory, sharing an office with my colleague and mentor Enrico Fermi—Hans Bethe's mentor in Rome as well. When I returned in 1951, and asked Edward Teller, another University of Chicago colleague, what was new and what I could do, he asked me to devise an experiment to confirm the principle of "radiation implosion," then very secret, that he and Ulam had invented that February. In May 1951, the young physicists Marshall Rosenbluth and Conrad Longmire were trying to do actual calculations on this method for using the energy from an ordinary fission bomb to compress and heat fusion fuel-- that is, heavy hydrogen (deuterium). I decided that the most convincing experiment would be a full-scale hydrogen bomb, so I set about designing that. -

Additionally, this is a year for Strategic Planning for APS, when the membership will consider the evolving mission of APS and where we want to go as a society.
