Long Term Planning Theme at Annual Users' Meeting

"WHAT ARE THE DRIVING questions in high-energy physics for the next 25 years? What are the tools that will answer those questions?" These and other questions were posed by Peter Rosen, Associate Director in the DOE's Office of Science, during the annual SLUO Meeting in July. Over 200 users came to SLAC from around the world for a discussion about the science and politics of high energy physics (HEP). Speaking at the meeting, SLAC Director Jonathan Dorfan and Fermilab Director Michael Witherell expressed similar sentiments. Dorfan suggested that a different planning model is needed for the new challenges facing big science. "Previously we looked at a next generation machine and we endorsed that one s facility.
