My analysis differs from past studies' suggestions that the strike was a libertarian eruption of mass protest against British imperialism and the Hongkong Government, which, according to these studies, exploited and oppressed Chinese in Guangdong and Hongkong. I argue that a political party, the CCP, led, organised, and nurtured the strike. It centralised political power in its hands and tried to impose its revolutionary visions on those under its control. First, I describe how foreign trade enriched many people outside the state. I go on to describe how Chinese-run institutions governed Hongkong's increasingly settled non-elite Chinese population. I reject ideas that Hongkong's mixed-class unions exploited workers and suggest that revolutionaries failed to transform Hongkong society either before or during the strike. My thesis shows that the strike bureaucracy was an authoritarian power structure; the strike's unprecedented political demands reflected the CCP's revolutionary political platform, which was sometimes incompatible with the interests of Hongkong's unions. I suggestthat the revolutionary elite's goals were not identical to those of the unions it claimed to represent: Hongkong unions preserved their autonomy in the face of revolutionaries' attempts to control Hongkong workers. -

Messianism and the Heaven and Earth Society: Approaches to Heaven and Earth Society Texts Barend J. ter Haar During the last decade or so, social historians in China and the United States seem to have reached a new consensus on the origins of the Heaven and Earth Society (Tiandihui; "society" is the usual translation for hui, which, strictly speaking, means "gathering"; for the sake of brevity, the phenomenon is referred to below with the common alternative name "Triad," a translation of sänke hui). They view the Triads äs voluntary brotherhoods organized for mutual support, which later developed into a successful predatory tradition. Supporters of this Interpretation react against an older view, based on a literal reading of the Triad foundation myth, according to which the Triads evolved from pro-Ming groups during the early Qing dynasty. The new Interpretation relies on an intimate knowledge of the official documents that were produced in the course of perse- cuting these brotherhoods on the mainland and on Taiwan since the late eigh- teenth Century. The focus of this recent research has been on specific events, resulting in a more detailed factual knowledge of the phenomenon than before (Cai 1987; Qin 1988: 1—86; Zhuang 1981 provides an excellent historiographical survey). Understandably, contemporary social historians have hesitated to tackle the large number of texts produced by the Triads because previous historians have misinterpreted them and because they are füll of obscure religious Information and mythological references. Nevertheless, the very fact that these texts were produced (or copied) continuously from the first years of the nineteenth Century —or earlier—until the late 1950s, and served äs the basis for Triad initiation rituals throughout this period, leaves little doubt that they were important to the members of these groups. -

THE DIARY OF A MANCHU SOLDIER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644–1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengmeo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673–1682), fought mostly in southwestern China and widely regarded as the most serious internal military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851–1864). The author’s participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations, and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China’s early modern history. KITSON Amherst’s Embassy and Early Nineteenth-Century Sino-British Relations Two hundred years ago in the early hours of the morning 29 August 1816 (Jiaqing 21), William Pitt, Lord Amherst, unrested after travelling overnight, was unceremoniously manhandled in an attempt to usher him physically with his two deputies, George Thomas Staunton and Henry Ellis, into the presence of the Jiaqing Emperor at the Summer Palace of Yuanming Yuan. Exhausted, dirty after a very uncomfortable overnight journey and separated from his diplomatic credentials and ambassadorial robes, Amherst and his two deputies resisted, leaving the palace in anger. It was reported to the emperor that Amherst’s inability to attend the audience was occasioned by an indisposition, as was that of his deputies. The emperor, when discovering the diplomatic nature of this evasion, immediately and perhaps impulsively, dismissed the embassy without granting it an imperial audience and rejected its ‘tribute’ of gifts. Amherst’s party then began their long, overland journey south to Canton (Guangzhou) where the group embarked for home. British accounts, of which they were several, laid this ostensible ‘failure’ of the embassy to secure an imperial audience not on the Jiaqing Emperor, but on the scheming of certain senior court officials who had unwisely assured him that Amherst had practiced and was prepared to perform the ceremony of the full imperial koutou (or ketou both Mandarin) or ‘kowtow’ (anglicised) with three kneelings accompanied by three knockings of the forehead for each prostration. -

ABSTRACT Intangible heritage is a growing concept of emphasis in international communities. This study will define intangible heritage and focus on the performing arts in Taiwan. Inasmuch as Taiwanese Opera and Hand Puppetry are two of the most significant manifestations among others, research methods of qualitative interviews and non-participant observations will be used to gain an insight into their practices through investigating certain practitioners. This study will in particular explore organisational management and training approaches that ensure their artistry and skills are transmitted, contributing to the dissemination of intangible heritage. Furthermore, this study will inspect how the competent authorities determine the designation and registration of intangible heritage. Governmental schemes and their implementation for the safeguarding intangible heritage will be thoroughly examined, revealing the integrity and effectiveness of administrative systems, especially as the competent authorities are confronted by certain problems in the interpretation of intangible heritage, interaction with practitioners and controversy. -

A Streetcar named “Utility”: Useful and Reliable Knowledge in China in the Second Millennium Christine Moll-Murata Ruhr-Universität Bochum This essay explores the term “useful knowledge” as it was discussed and defined by the Peking “Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China”, established in 1872 by a group of colonial officials, merchants, and missionaries. Setting out from the scope of “Useful and Reliable Knowledge” as defined by the URKEW (Useful and Reliable Knowledge in Global Histories of Material Progress in the East and the West) group for imperial China, it presents the case of architectural handbooks between the twelfth and the eighteenth centuries. This includes both those published by state authorities and those in circulation among artisans, focusing on their different contents and implicit understandings of “usefulness”. The term “useful and reliable knowledge” has intrigued and still puzzles many scholars, especially those who work on world regions where the common language of codification of technical knowledge is not English. Recently, Karel Davids has shown that the term “useful knowledge” was not applied in the same sense in Central and Western Europe, nor in America, and its semantic range has been narrowed down in the course of the sixteenth century to the present.1 The Peking “Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China” Before looking at the Chinese record for examples of endogenous technographical writings and their application in the field of architecture, we may reflect on the transfer of the English term “useful knowledge” to China. This transfer took place in the nineteenth century in the form of an enlightenment campaign that set out to bring Western science and technology to China. -

The Legend, the Play, and the Movie the Chinese University Press
I. Introduction: The Legend, the Play, and the Movie Following the Communist conquest of the Chinese mainland and the estab- lishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the Chinese movie industry (studios, distribution, and cinemas) was quickly nationalized.1 Like all other media, film was expected to serve the Revolution. As a result, the majority of movies produced in the 1950s celebrated China’s struggle for national independence against foreign foes and inside China the struggle of Materials the laboring masses against their masters. Against this background, the block- buster success in 1956 and thereafter of the 1955 movie Married to a Heavenly Immortal (Tianxian pei 天仙配; released as The Marriage of the Fairy Princess, but also referred to as The Heavenly Match or The Fairy Couple) is even more Copyrighted remarkable. Chinese From the very beginning, both its scriptwriter Sang Hu 桑弧 (1916–2004) and its director ShiThe Hui 石揮 (1915–1957) conceived of the movie as “a fairy-tale film with song and dance.” The Huangmei Opera play Married to a Heavenly Immortal was a great success at the East China Theater Festival of October 1954.2 At that time Huangmei Opera was not a prestigious form of traditional opera.
