    In 2016 a large catch-up* in infrastructure investments is being confirmed by several Latin American countries, driven by the knowledge that economic growth relies heavily on quality infrastructure. The transport sector is going to firmly benefit from the expected increase in public and private funds. The continent being one of the most urbanized regions in the world, a large focus goes into urban rail projects: Mexico, Guatemala, Paraguay, Colombia, Chile, Brazil… are planning new projects for metro, light rail, high speed rail, monorail and passenger trains.     GLOBAL METRO PROJECTS REPORT 2018 The continued growth of the metrorail sector across the world has reinforced its role in urban transportation and boosted the order book of many construction contractors and equipment suppliers. The sector has benefited from favourable government policies, public investment and recognition as the mode of choice for transport authorities interested in providing sustainable urban mobility solutions for Smart Cities. The industry has many opportunities because the existing lines and rolling stock need renewal and upgrade; there is a strong pipeline of projects which are in approval or planning phase and new business segments such as asset management, support for complex construction and operations planning have opened up in the services sector. Transport authorities are keen to improve service reliability, operations efficiency and environmental sustainability of the existing metrorail systems as well as lower costs and implementation timelines of upcoming systems. New technology has enabled greater engagement with the customers through integrated electronic ticketing and Wi-Fi, demand-based and flexible service for crowd management, real-time passenger alerts, low downtime due to predictive maintenance and increased lifespan of assets. The transport authorities adopting best practices in these areas receive the benefits of enhanced image and high ridership. The Global Metro Projects Report 2018 assesses the current metrorail sector and identifies upcoming opportunities. It provides updated information on 100 metro projects from 52 countries representing over 80 per cent of the world's gross domestic product. The report is comprehensive in its coverage of opportunities in the development of new lines, extension and upgrades of existing lines, rolling stock procurement and refurbishment, power and communication systems upgrades, fare systems, as well as station construction and refurbishment.

Metropolitan railway (metrorail, also known as metro, subway, underground or the tube) systemsoffer an effective, efficient and sustainable mobility option.     S É R I E C A D E R N O S T É C N I C O S volume 8 Sistemas Inteligentes de Transportes S É R I E C A D E R N O S T É C N I C O S volume 8 Sistemas Inteligentes de Transportes maio/2012 APRESENTAÇÃO m novembro de 2003, a ANTP abriu a sua série de Cadernos Técnicos com a publicação do seu Volume 1 dedicado à Bilhetagem Eletrônica e, passados nove anos, este é o Caderno Técnico Nº 8. EAo longo desse período, vários outros aspectos relacionados ao desenvolvimento tecnológico ga- nharam espaço na entidade e na série de Cadernos. Em 20 de setembro de 2006 foi instalada a Comissão Técnica de ITS, da sigla internacional para “Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte”, reunindo associados e interessados nos mais diversos campos de aplicação. O debate e a troca de experiências relativas a ITS, que a partir deste ano de 2012 também passou a ser possível por meio de grupos de discussão pela internet, não tem se limitado ao ambiente da Comissão. O tema ITS ganhou espaço nos Congressos bienais da ANTP, tendo sido incluído na sua pauta técnica e nas Exposições (Intrans) organizadas a partir de 1999, com um número signifi cativo de expositores. Esta dinâmica em parte refl ete a evolução dos “Sistemas Inteligentes de Transportes” no Brasil. O adven - to de computadores pessoais e a globalização das atividades econômicas vêm permitindo que recursos de ITS sejam assimilados por usuários, operadores e gestores com pouco ou nenhum conhecimento tecnoló- gico específi co.
