Wilson* Illinois Wesleyan University Caution: This document graphically reveals what happens to people caught one mile away from a small primitive nuclear weapon . Why world peace is necessary That Day: Monday, August 6, 1945, 8:15 AM : In the center of Hiroshima, just above Shima Hospital, it seemed like the sun had descended to the earth, followed by the sky blasting down like a Richter-10 cosmic quake from the gods, “rattling the earth’s axis,” scorching, searing, roasting, irradiating, blasting, and crushing everything and everyone below. It was as if the sun touched Hiroshima, creating a blazing inferno with no escape; hell was overflowing down onto the city; neutron radiation from the bomb made people’s bones radioactive (radio-chemical warfare ). Blast winds in excess of 200 miles per hour (mph), with blast overpressure blowing out ear drums and forcing eyeballs out of their sockets (like globe luxation ); it hurled and slammed people into stone walls. Scorched blistered skin sloughed and peeled off their bodies, dragging on the ground as they tried to escape the city. The retinas of eyes looking up were burned. Stone and concrete buildings were fire-gutted to their cores, the blast-shattered glass window fragments sharply tearing into the bodies of those within, and without. This happened to Hiroshima citizens, the children and families, within seconds on August 6. Birds and butterflies never had a chance. -

By comparing and analyzing The Book Thief and Grave of the Fireflies, this study claims that war and blind patriotism have stolen the childhood from the war-stricken children and that love, care, company and chances to speak out the pain can be the treatments. In the study, traumatic narratives, traumatic elements and treatments in both books are discussed comparatively and respectively. INTRODUCTION Markus Zusak's novel The Book Thief relates how Liesel Meminger, a little German girl, lost her beloved ones during the Second World War and how she overcame her miseries with love, friendship and the power of words. But The Book Thief is not just a Bildungsroman. According to Zusak, the inspiration of the book came from his parents, who witnessed a collection of Jews on their way to the death camps and the streetscape of Hamburg after the firebombing. The eggs are the unarmed civilians who are crushed and burned and shot by them… And each of us, to a greater or lesser degree, is confronting a high, solid wall. The wall has a name: It is The System. The System is supposed to protect us, but sometimes it takes on a life of its own and then it begins to kill us and cause us to kill others - coldly, efficiently, systematically. – Haruki Murakami Food consumption during wartime is not only the usual fundamental source of energy, especially for soldiers in combat; it is also “an important home-front weapon essential for preserving order and productivity” of the citizens.1 This study analyzes the sociopolitical and cultural meaning of food in Japan during World War II by examining social commentary and criticism implied in selected post-war literature about the war by popular writers, when the role of food during wartime in the lives of ordinary citizens could be depicted without censorship. These literary works offer insight into the inner lives and conflicts of ordinary Japanese citizens, including civilians and conscripted soldiers, under the fascist military regime during the war. -

Honoring witnesses to a nuclear nightmare Edward Guthmann, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, August 1, 2007 When Steven Okazaki was making "White Light/Black Rain," his terrific HBO documentary about the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he couldn't afford to think too deeply about the material. "I just took one deep breath," he remembers, "and continued through the whole film." It was only later, after the Sundance Film Festival in January, that Okazaki, a 1991 Oscar winner for the documentary short "Days of Waiting," could take it all in: to absorb the reality of 210,000 deaths caused by atomic bomb attacks on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945; the 160,000 subsequent deaths from delayed radiation effects; the images of scorched bodies, flattened cityscapes and children discovering their parents' remains; the callous Japanese government that treated survivors as "untouchables," as one witness says. "Around March," Okazaki says, "I suddenly started feeling it and thinking about the whole thing. I just wanted to stay in bed." He spent two months in "a delayed depression." Okazaki, 55, shot the documentary in Japan with a Japanese crew, and interviewed more than 100 people before choosing the 14 hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) who appear in the film. Among them: Shigeko Sasamori, who was 13 when Hiroshima was bombed and became one of 25 "Hiroshima Maidens" flown to the United States for cosmetic surgery; Keiji Nakazawa, who was 6, and later illustrated the horrors of Hiroshima in his manga series "Barefoot Gen;" and Sakue Shimohira, who found her mother's charred body following the Nagasaki explosion, and watched it "turn to ash." Unlike most films about the bombings, "White Light/Black Rain" includes wrenching footage of bombing victims, both the dead and the burned, disfigured survivors. -

Para ello se hará un breve recorrido por la historia de Japón, al igual que por la historia del cine de animación, haciendo foco en el anime. También se incluirá la biografía del director y se hará un breve recorrido por la historia y las obras de Studio Ghibli desde sus comienzos, estudio de cine de animación creado en 1985 por Hayao Miyazaki e Isao Takahata –director de cine de animación nipón–. Para concluir si existe definitivamente un estilo Miyazaki se analizarán sus obras en base a los siguientes ejes de investigación: el argumento en sus películas, los recursos estilísticos empleados, y los temas y conceptos principales y recurrentes.
