Director: Daniel Sousa

Synopsis: A wild boy is found in the woods by a solitary hunter and brought back to civilization. Alienated by a strange new environment, the boy tries to adapt by using the same strategies that kept him safe in the forest.

Director’s Biography: In his work, Daniel Sousa uses and themes commonly found in mythology and fairy tales to examine archetypes of human nature, and the inner struggles between our intellects and our unconscious drives. Rather than following conventional narratives, he approaches from a painter s perspective. He focuses on states of mind, evoking the ʼ fragility of fleeting moments, memories and perceptions. Daniel was born in Cape Verde and grew up in . A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Sousa has worked as a director and animator with Cartoon Network, Olive Jar Studios, Global Mechanic, and Duck. Sousa has taught at several colleges in the New England area, including Harvard University, The Museum School, and The Art Institute of Boston. Since 2001 he has been teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design. He is a Creative Capital grantee for the production of his new , "Feral".

Synopsis: Animation Studios’ innovative new short “Get A Horse!” is a contemporary homage to the first animated shorts featuring , with all-new, black-and-white, hand-drawn animation that’s paired with full-color, 3D, CG filmmaking—in the same frame. Mickey (voice of Walt Disney), his favorite gal pal Minnie Mouse and their friends Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow delight in a musical haywagon ride—until Peg-Leg Pete shows up and tries to run them off the road. This groundbreaking short takes a sharp turn when Mickey finds himself separated from Minnie and must use every trick up his sleeve to find his way back to her. Directed by Lauren MacMullan and produced by Dorothy McKim, “Get A Horse!” is in theaters in front of “”.

Director’s Biography: Lauren MacMullan (Director), veteran director of hit TV shows including “,” “” and “Avatar, The Last Airbender,” also served as sequence director on “.”

MacMullan was born and raised in Swarthmore, Penn. She attended Harvard University starting in 1982. During that time, as part of the Harvard Lampoon humor magazine (including a stint as president in 1985), she learned to draw in many styles, designed a 20-foot party hat for a building, and made a student film using the rubber-hose style of animation. She graduated in 1989 and continued to hone her animation skills while working for her animation professor, Suzan Pitt, on her 1991 film “Joy Street.”

In 1992, MacMullan was a winner of an MTV “World Problems, World Solutions” storyboard contest. The contest required entrants to identify and propose a solution to a world problem in 30 seconds or less, and the 12 winners got a small budget to make their proposed . Her completed film “Feet” won first prize among all contestants at the Annecy International Animation Festival.

MacMullan launched her professional career as a commercial director with the Boston-based Olive Jar Studios in 1991, specializing in mixed media ads and MTV IDs. Two years later, she moved to to direct on the primetime animated TV series “” for ABC and Fox. One of the most memorable moments she directed for “The Critic” was a stop-motion “Nightmare Before Christmas” parody that featured a Hanukkahtown sequence with the sets built out of powdered sugar and matzoh. She went on to direct several episodes of the Mike Judge/Fox TV series “King of the Hill,” and served as a supervising director and designer for the WB “Mission Hill.”

Starting in 2001, MacMullan was a staff director for “The Simpsons,” and is credited with helming episodes over the next four seasons, including “Bye Bye Nerdie,” “Half-Decent Proposal,” “Moe Better Blues” and “I, D'oh-Bot,” among others. MacMullan worked for two years on the Peabody Award-winning Nick TV series “Avatar, the Last Airbender,” directing eight episodes and winning an Annie Award for storyboarding.

She served as one of four sequence directors (along with “Wreck- Ralph” director Rich Moore) on the blockbuster 2007 feature “The Simpsons Movie.” followed by a stint at Animation Studios. In 2010, she joined Walt Disney Animation Studios as a story artist on the Annie Award-winning, Oscar®-nominated “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Synopsis: Mr Hublot lives in a world where characters are made partially of mechanical parts, driving huge vehicles, rub shoulders with each other. A world where the giant scale of machines and the relentless use of salvaged materials reign supreme.

A withdrawn, idiosyncratic character with OCD, Mr Hublot is scared of change and the outside world. His solution: he doesn't step foot outside his apartment! The arrival of the dog Robot Pet will turn his life upside down: he has to share his home with this very invasive companion...

Director’s Biography: Born in Haguenau on November 21st, 1975, Laurent Witz gets rapidly passionate about graphic arts. He attends the Metz Fine Arts Institute where he obtains his diploma with honours. Self-taught, he learns 3D creation and animation during his studies and directs four short films between 1997 and 1998.

The following year, he works for Ex-Machina, where he continues his learning process as an artistic director, an animator or an assistant director on some projects. He arrives in Luxembourg in 2002 to work on the « Roman de Renart ». From then on, he regularly works for studios where he supervises, directs and develops animated projects. Among other projects, he is a 3D supervisor on the series Wordworld, T'choupi and Noukies.

In 2007, Laurent founded ZEILT productions Luxembourg, to further his vision of animation and audiovisual production. He created in 2009 the Animation Café, « the cultural haunt for animation in Luxembourg ».

In 2012-2013, he produced, wrote and co-directed Mr Hublot his first professional short movie. He is now thinking about adapting Mr Hublot into a . Laurent is also producing and directing a teaser for a full-length film, "Wilfred", which will be completed in 2014.

Synopsis: The 18th Century. On a stormy night, deep in the mountains, a man has lost his way and comes across a small shrine. When he enters, the space suddenly turns into a room in a different world. One after another appear abandoned umbrellas, discarded kimonos, and such spectral things. The man painstakingly mends these paraphernalia, which harbor deep-seated bitterness, and brings them comfort. “How well you served people before you turned to rags. Your rest is earned.”

Director’s Biography: Prior to directing "Possessions," Morita's served as the Animation Director of the award-winning films, “Kakurenbo” (Winner of the Best Picture Award of Awards and the Short Film Gold Award of Fantasia Film Festival) and “Freedom” (Winner of the Technology Award of Japan Visual Technology Award). He was born in the Nara prefecture of Japan.

Synopsis: A half hour animated film based on the wonderful children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Room On The Broom is a magical tale about friendship and family from Magic Light Pictures, the producers of the hugely successful The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.

A story about a kind witch who invites a surprising collection of animals to join her on her broom, much to the frustration of her cat. The gang ultimately saves the witch from a fearsome dragon, and in gratitude she rewards them with a magnificent new broom which has room for everyone. Featuring the voices of Gillian Anderson (Witch), Rob Brydon (Cat), Martin Clunes (Dog), Sally Hawkins (Bird), Simon Pegg (Narrator), Timothy Spall (Dragon), David Walliams (Frog).

Directors’ Biographies: Max Lang is an OSCAR® and BAFTA‐nominated animation director, story artist and character designer. He co ‐directed the award ‐winning animated film The Gruffalo and was assistant director on the first season of The Amazing World Of Gumball for Cartoon Network. Max has recently completed co‐directing Room On The Broom for Magic Light Pictures. He is a graduate of the Filmakademie Baden ‐Wu ̈rttemberg and the Animation School Hamburg. Max lives in London with his wife, daughter and cat.

Jan Lachauer was born in Munich in 1983 and started to work in the animation industry in 2005. He studied at the prestigious Filmakademie Baden- Wu ̈rttemberg in Ludwigsburg from 2006 to 2011. In 2007/2008 Jan studied 2D animation at the renowned Gobelins, lécole de l'image in Paris. During his studies he worked on various award winning film productions as director, animator and CG generalist. Jan Lachauer made his professional directorial debut as co- director on Room On The Broom.

Director’s Biography: Selma Vilhunen (b.1976) is a director and a screenwriter of both fiction and documentary films. She has graduated from the Turku Polytechnic / Arts Academy in film directing. Her works as a director include Pietà (TV film) and Pony Girls (follow-up documentary), which won the main prize in . She has also written a feature film Homesick (with director Petri Kotwica) and a TV film, Suburban Virgin (dir. Hanna Maylett). She lives in Helsinki with her husband and daughter.

Synopsis: The short film AQUEL NO ERA YO, written and directed by Spanish director Esteban Crespo, tells the story of Paula and Kaney. Two characters, an African child and a Spanish woman, who could have nothing in common, but will get to join their lives forever through a life‐giving shot.

Director’s Biography: Esteban Crespo is a scriptwriter and director. He started his career with documentaries, making several pieces for television. Later, he became a content advisor and analyst of children programs for TVE (Spanish Television). He combined this work with the direction of the short-films “Siempre Quise Trabajar en una Fábrica”, “Amar”, “Fin” and “Lala”, which was nominated for Best Live Action Short-Film at the in 2010, and the multi-awarded “Nadie Tiene la Culpa” (“It’s Nobody’s Fault”), which received the Jury Prize at the 2011 Montreal International Film Festival, among others. His latest short-film “Aquel No Era Yo” was awarded the Goya for the Best Live Action Short-Film by the Spanish Film Academy in 2013 and has so far received more than 90 national and international awards. He currently directs commercials and he is working on his first feature film.

Synopsis: Doctor Williams is called in to examine the enigmatic Mr Voorman, a prisoner with a peculiar affliction: he believes he is a god. The doctor must decide on the sanity of Mr Voorman: is he a faker or a lunatic? Diagnose him insane and they can ship him off to the asylum. But before making a decision, the doctor has several questions in relation to Voorman’s claim: why would a god choose to be straitjacketed in a prison, is there a way he can validate his boast and what has any of this got to do with Belgium?

Director’s Biography: Shortly after winning a Royal Television Society Award with his graduation film, Mark began production on his first major short film, 'The Voorman Problem'. The film was nominated for a BAFTA in 2013 and has had over 40 Official Selections including BFI London, Aspen Shortsfest, Clermont-Ferrand and Rhode Island Film Festivals. It has picked up several awards in the UK, USA and Europe. Mark's latest short film 'Full Time' premiered at the 57th BFI London Film Festival in 2013. He is now in development with his first feature.

Synopsis: Ra Paulette digs cathedral-like, 'eighth wonder of the world' art caves into the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico. Each creation takes him years to complete, and each is a masterwork. But patrons who have commissioned caves have cut off nearly all of his projects due to artistic differences. Fed up, Ra has chosen to forego commissions altogether and create a massive, 10-year project, his Magnum Opus.

Director’s Biography: Jeffrey Karoff honed his skills as a director at UCLA, the American Film Institute Director’s Program and as the founder and producer of Paradox Works, a workshop for directors and actors. His body of work encompasses national commercial spots for the auto, technology and pharmaceutical industries. Karoff also directs fundraising docs for the NYC philanthropic powerhouse, the Robin Hood Foundation. Cavedigger is his first documentary. Karoff lives in Venice, California, and visits New Mexico regularly.

Director’s Biography: Jason Cohen has produced and directed all formats of film and television on a broad range of topics over the past 20 years. Currently, Cohen is in post production on Four Women, One World, a global film about love and forgiveness, filmed in Uganda, India, Haiti and Spain.

Cohen has long collaborated with Academy Award-winning director Steven Okazaki. He was a producer on Okazaki’s HBO films, Black Tar Heroin: Dark End of the Street and the Emmy Award-winning White Light/Black Rain.

Cohen has also worked in narrative film, producing Opal, based on the life of controversial author, Opal Whiteley, which premiered at the 2010 Mill Valley Film Festival .

In addition to his film and TV work, Cohen has produced numerous commercial and promotional projects for Microsoft, Nike and Gatorade, working with athletes Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and others.

Synopsis: ‘Karama Has No Walls’ is a documentary film set in Change Square, in Yemen’s capital city Sana’a, where members of a heavily armed population set aside their weapons, and peacefully assembled in early 2011 to demand the fall of Ali Abdullah Saleh’s 33 year autocratic rule.

As pro-government snipers shot dead 53 protesters and injured a thousand more, the Yemen nation was shaken to its core and the masses flocked to the square in solidarity with their fellow citizens. The film illustrates the nature of the 2011 Yemeni uprising in stark contrast to the gross violations of human rights that took place on the Friday of Dignity (Juma’at El-Karama), marking a turning point in Yemen’s revolution. Through the lenses of two cameramen and the accounts of two fathers, the film retells the story of the people behind the statistics and news reports, encapsulating the tragic events of the day as they unfolded from a prayer gathering into a barrage of bullets.

Director’s Biography: Sara Ishaq is a Yemeni-Scot who grew up in Sana’a and moved to Edinburgh in 2001 to pursue a higher education in Social Sciences (2007), followed by an MFA in film directing (2012). Although based in Scotland for 10 years, she continued to visit the Middle East, namely Palestine, to volunteer as a teacher and document human rights issues through video-blogs. In 2011, she returned to Yemen at the onset of the Yemen uprising, and began reporting on BBC radio and filming for BBC World Service/Newsnight. In early 2012, she finished her debut award-winning documentary film ‘Karama has no Walls’, which has been shortlisted for the Oscar awards 2014 for Short Documentary and was nominated for the BAFTA Scotland New Talents Award in 2012 and One World Media award in 2013. In September 2013, she completed her first feature film ‘The Mulberry House’, which deals with her relationship with her Yemeni family against the backdrop of the country’s 2011 revolution. Now based between Egypt and Yemen as a freelance director/producer, she is working on developing her local Yemeni production house (Setara Films) while establishing an Arts centre for Yemeni filmmakers and artists.

Director’s Biography: Edgar Barens received his Bachelor’s degree and Masters of Fine Arts in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University. His body of work includes documentary films, experimental shorts, music videos and public service announcements. Prior to Prison Terminal, Baren's “A Sentence of Their Own” garnered the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle and the National Council on Crime and Delinquency PASS (Prevention for a Safer Society) award - ‐ the only national award recognizing filmmakers who focus on our criminal justice system in a thoughtful and considerate manner.

Director’s Biography: Academy® Award-winning Director & Producer MALCOLM CLARKE began his directing career in his native England making films for the BBC. He subsequently joined Granada TV's 'World in Action' unit specifically to investigate the murder of a celebrated South African political activist. Shot entirely in secret, 'The Life and Death of Steve Biko' resulted in Biko's murder becoming a global cause célèbre and after the Monte Carlo Film Festival awarded the film its Grand Prize, Mr. Clarke was invited to New York to produce and direct films for the ABC Network.

Clarke’s first US film; 'Terror in the Promised Land' chronicled the of a Palestinian suicide squad. Shot throughout Europe, North Africa & the Middle East, this acclaimed, multiple award-winning film was heavily boycotted when it was first shown on network TV in the US, since it graphically depicted the completion of a terrorist mission in which they killed both themselves and their Israeli captives.

During the next decade Clarke produced films in more than forty countries, frequently assigned to portray highly volatile people in extremely dangerous situations; Torturers, Serial Killers, Vigilantes, Mercenaries, Mobsters and the Yakuza were the focus of much of Clarke's later documentary work, garnering prizes at several international film festivals, plus six Emmy Awards, five Ace Awards, three Academy® Award nominations and an OSCAR®.

After a period in Los Angeles writing theatrical feature films Mr. Clarke returned to documentaries to Produce, Direct & Write ‘Prisoner of Paradise’ a documentary-feature about the life and tragic death of ‘Kurt Gerron, the celebrated Berlin Film Director and Actor who, while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in 1944, was ordered to make a which would show the world how 'well' the Jews of Europe were being treated by their Nazi captors.

'Prisoner' was the only film in 2003 to be nominated for both an Academy® Award for 'Best Documentary Feature' and the Directors' Guild of America Award. It won the Best Documentary Director award from the Directors’ Guild of Canada, the Platinum Award for Best Documentary Film at the Houston International Film Festival (2003) plus the prestigious John Grierson Award (2003) presented annually by the British Academy of Film & TV Arts for the Best Documentary Film.
