Chapter 18 Mobilizing Farmers' Knowledge of the Soil Domoina J. Rakotoson, Lovatiana A. Rakotonirina, and Georges Serpantie One way in which a culture can be read is through the way its people control their material environment, and through the knowledge that accompanies it. Such knowledge is part and parcel of social representations, which are ways of imagining daily life and the world, as developed, shared and transmitted within a community. They set up a consensual reality, and orientate the behaviour of a group, with the view of controlling the social, material, and ideological environment (Levy and Lussault 2003). In rural communities, control and use of land is one arena where "local" or "indigenous" knowledge is one of the main determinants. We will focus on such "local land knowledge". While there is a purely anthropological interest in these folk representations and classifications (Friedberg 1992; Holman 2005), there is also a practical interest in how this rural knowledge interfaces with the external stakeholders' ideas that are often derived from popularized scientific knowledge. In every project concerning rural areas, indigenous knowledge (particularly among the farmers) must be recognized and taken into account in order to bring about consensus between various stakeholders on actions to be carried out (Dupre 1991; Roose, 1994). An example from Madagascar will show how the mobilization of rural knowledge about the soil, and close observations of cultivated soils and indigenous agricultural practices, are particularly important components of projects aimed at achieving sustainable agriculture. Separated with South-East Africa by the Mozambique Channel, Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, and contains a wide variety of landscapes and ecosystems. -

Astiella is an herbaceous genus endemic to Madagascar, originally described with a single species A. delicatula Jovet. Molecular and morphological evidence place it in the tribe Spermacoceae s. lat. of Rubiaceae. During herbarium studies and fieldwork in Madagascar, 11 new Astiella species were identified and these are described here: A. antongilensis Groeninckx sp. nov., A. antsalovansis Groeninckx sp. nov., A. confusa Groeninckx sp. nov., A. deblockiae Groeninckx sp. nov., A. desseinii Groeninckx sp. nov., A. homolleae Groeninckx sp. nov., A. latifolia Groeninckx sp. nov., A. longifimbria Groeninckx sp. nov., A. perrieri Groeninckx sp. nov., A. pulla Groeninckx sp. nov., and A. tsaratanensis Groeninckx sp. nov. The genus Astiella now holds 12 species in total that are all endemic to Madagascar. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Defining species limits and describing species of ants are important to identify taxa and habitats with elevated diversity in areas of high conservation priority such as the Malagasy region. The Pachycondyla wasmannii-group is revised in the Malagasy region where eight species are recognized, four of which are new: P. ma soa la sp. n., P. planicornis sp. n., P. tavaratra sp. n., and P. v azimb a sp. n. Four species have been previously described: P. ca mbo ue i Forel, P. comorensis (André), P. perroti Forel, and P. wasmannii Forel. Pachycondyla perroti admista Forel is newly synonymized under P. perroti. Pachycondyla cambouei is widespread in eastern Madagascar, morphologically variable, and divided into seven morphotypes. An identification key to species and distribution maps are provided for the genus in the Malagasy region. All species are known only from Madagascar except P. -

ANDRIAMALALA and THE SEING SAM Abstract We conducted a 16-month country-wide survey to determine the status of the threatened Madagascar (Marsh) Harrier Circus macrosceles from 2005 to 2006. We searched for harriers in varying habitat types, focusing on marshes, grasslands and savannas, secondary forests and the edge of primary forests. We surveyed 68% of the districts of Madagascar which contain 71%of the potential harrier habitat throughout the country. We recorded 80 individuals of this sexually dimorphic raptor; 48 males and 32 females of which 71 were observed during the breeding season (June to December) and nine outside the breeding season (January to May). The Madagascar Harrier has a broad distribution of about 1,000 km north to south (Madagascar is about 1,500 km in length) and east to west, but at extremely low density. Fifty-three (69%) harriers were observed in high elevation marshes and grasslands above 1,100 m in the provinces of Mahajanga and Antananarivo during the breeding season. Three major threats to harriers, all human caused, were identified: the transformation of marshes to rice fields (all nests in lower elevation natural marshes), uncontrolled fires destroying nests (n 5 7 nests lost in 2005 to fires), and human persecution by taking young from nests for a food source and killing adults due to their predatory nature.
