When CBS aired the 60 Minutes episode about the plant growth regulator Alar, the tree fruit industry was surprised and dismayed by the onslaught of negative publicity. Not since Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published in 1962 has public consciousness of the potential undesirable side effects of pesticides been so high. Although not so widely publicized, the response of the Pacific Northwest tree fruit industry has been laudatory: it has redoubled its ongoing efforts to develop and implement Integrated Pest Management (1PM) programs. This book represents one component of that effort. The purpose of this book is to provide both a reference for practical use, and to educate and inform the user. Our intent is that the reader gain a broader appreciation of entomology in general, and tree fruit 1PM in particular. To this end, we have made it as comprehensive as possible. Some of the pests which are currently rare in commercial orchards may resurface as we move towards more selective 1PM programs. Happily, many of the natural enemies we seldom see may become commonplace under these programs. A person desiring specific information can readily locate it, because of indexing, standardized for­ mat, and the variety of photographs and summary graphics. Some redundancy occurs in different sections so that the reader can find the desired information, without referring to multiple sections. This is especially apparent in sections where several pests have a similar life cycle (e.g., mites), or between biological control and management sections under the pest, and information given under its predators or parasites. Where appropriate, related information has been cross-referenced in the text. Occasionally, the authors have referred to what is not known, but may be relevant to 1PM. Delimiting the scope of our knowledge is in some cases just as enlightening as providing the information that we have at our disposal. This book was written in such a way that it should be useful to a broad cross-section of readers. Some of the more detailed information on biology and management will be of interest to only a small proportion of the readers, while the photographs, life history charts, and general information should be universally useful. The use of specific pesticide names throughout most of the book has been deliberately avoided. The 1988 amendments to FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act) have acceler­ ated the loss of materials available to the industry, while new registrations have slowed to a trickle. Any specific recommendations on a pesticide may soon be outdated. This book is intended to com­ plement, not replace, the annually revised pest control guides published by the various fruit-growing regions. These guides contain specific recommendations for pesticide use, and even their annual revision format cannot entirely keep pace with the changes in labeled uses.     The Green Lacewings of the Genus Chrysopa in Maryland ( Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) Ralph A. Bram and William E. Bickley Department of Entomology INTRODUCTION Tlw green lacewings which are members of the genus Chrysopa are extreme- ly lwndicia1 insects. The larvae are commonly called aphislions and are well known as predators of aphids and other injurious insects. They play an important part in the regulation of populations of pests under natural conditions, and in California they have been cultured in mass and released for the control of mealy- bugs ( Finney, 1948 and 1950) . The positive identification of members of the genus is desirable for the use of biological-control workers and entomologists in general. Descriptions of most of the Nearctic species of Chrysopidae have relied heavily on body pigmentation and to a lesser extent on wing shape, venational patterns and coloration. Specimens fade when preserved in alcohol or on pins, and natural variation in color patterns occurs in many species ( Smith 1922, Bickley 1952). It is partly for these reasons that some of the most common and relatively abundant representatives of the family are not easily recognized. The chrysopid fauna of North America was treated comprehensively by Banks ( 1903). Smith ( 1922) contributed valuable information about the biology of the green lacewings and about the morphology and taxonomy of the larvae. He also pro- vided k<'ys and other help for the identification of species from Kansas ( 1925, 1934) and Canada ( 1932). Froeschner ( 194 7) similarly dealt with Missouri species. Bickley and MacLeod ( 1956) presented a review of the family as known to occur in the N earctic region north of Mexico.

The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author.     A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia.

Este insecto ha sido encontrado en diversas localidades de la X Región. Se entregan algunos antecedentes de su biología y de sus plantas hospederas. ABSTRACT The presence in Chile of the holoartic sawfly Ametastegia glabrata (Fallen) is reported. It is a polypha- gous insect, that feed on different cultivated plants and weeds.
