Gaál: Caves of Divín Castle Hill, Tuhár Karst, Slovakia Abstract: Two interesting caves of the Divín Castle Hill in the northern part of the Tuhár Karst in Revúcka vrchovina Mts. (southern Slovakia) was discovered by F. Radinger (2014a,b). Its geological and morphological characteristics are brought by this paper. The Castle Hill is formed in the Middle Triassic variegated crystalline limestone (Tuhár Marble). In the Divínska hradná Cave (Divín Cas- tle Cave) with a length of 105.7 m, a horizontal passage is created in 10 m depth which indicates a horizontal circulation of karst waters in the Middle Pleistocene. This horizont is possible to correlate with the Mindel proluvial fans conserved on the right side of Budinský Brook. The second (smaller) cave is created in dark grey bedded marly limestone with dark shales in the underbed of the Tuhár Marble. It behaved probably as estavela in the Late Pleistocene or Holocene. Ulicsni et al. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies.

Novaj; Hungary) A. Dávid Abstract: Among the Egerian Age exposures of North-east Hungary the Molluscan Clay of Wind Brickyard (Eger) and Nyárjas Hill (Novaj) contain fossils in exceptional richness. Distribution of molluscs of the Molluscan Clay of these two outcrops according to habitats and feeding habits is examined and compared. There are definite differences between the two localities. Introduction Among the several Upper-Oligocene outrops of North-Hungary the Molluscan Clay layers «f _Wind Brickyard, Eger and Nyárjas Hill, Novaj is compared (Fig.l.). These layers contain well-preserved „micro-mollusc" fossils abudantly. The bivalves, gastropods and schaphopods which were living here during the Egerian stage have belonged into the Hinia — Cadulus fossil community. It refers to similar paleoenvironments in case of both localities. The sea was deeper than 120 metres and the bottom was covered by fine-gra ined, clayey sediments. The aim of the investigation was to examine the distribution of the molluscs according to habitats and feeding habits in the collected materials. Methods Fifteen kilograms of clay was taken from both localities. After drying the samples were treated with hot water and peroxide of hydrogen. This material was washed out through a 0,5 nun sieve. At the end the molluscan remains were assorted from among the other fossils (e.gJ^oraminifera, Decapoda, Echinoidea, Osteichthyes).

MALTZ1 and ANNA SULIKOWSKA-DROZD2 1Museum of Natural History, Wrocław University, Sienkiewicza 21, 50-335 Wrocław, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] 2Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Hydrobiology, University of Łódź, Banacha 12/16, 90-237 Łódź, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract.— Among the 24 native clausiliids, 15 were subject to laboratory observations. Eleven of them were found to be oviparous, three – egg retainers and one – ovoviviparous. Batches, containing most often one to about a dozen of partly calcified, ellipsoidal or spherical eggs, appeared usually in the spring and autumn (in non-hibernating individuals throughout the year). Probably the main factors determining the onset of reproduction are humidity and temperature while the photoperiod has no significant effect. The incubation period is ca. two weeks (room temperature), the hatching is synchronous or asynchronous. Cases of intra-batch and inter-batch cannibalism were observed. The minimum time from hatching/birth till adult size is ca. 3–9 months and after further 5–8 months the snails start producing eggs/babies. Clausiliids are iteroparous. Anatomical studies on the development of the reproductive system show that just before lip completion the reproductive system is still incompletely developed. Penis, epiphallus and spermatheca develop within the first month after growth completion (which would indicate attainment of ability to copulate), and the reproductive system becomes wholly mature only after a few months.

Acta Universitatis Latviensis, 2007, Vol. 723, Biology, pp. 7–20 Rare and endangered terrestrial gastropods of Lower Silesia (SW. Poland) – current status and perspectives Beata M. Pokryszko*, Tomasz K. Maltz Museum of Natural History, Wrocław University, Sienkiewicza 21, 50-335 Wrocław, Poland *Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Th e terrestrial malacofauna of Poland includes 177 species, 18 of which are introduced. Th e distribution borders of quite many of them cross Poland, and the highest concentration of such borders (41 species) is found in Lower Silesia (Silesian Lowland plus Sudetes). Th e area is under heavy human impact, hence there is a need to protect, and particularly to study the land mollusc species that are locally or globally important from a conservation viewpoint: Discus perspectivus (Megerle von Mühlfeld, 1818), Eucobresia diaphana (Draparnaud, 1805), E. nivalis (Dumont et Mortillet, 1852), Semilimax kotulai (Westerlund, 1883), S. semilimax (Férussac,(Férussac, 1802),1802), Aegopinella epipedostoma (Fagot, 1879), Tandonia rustica (Millet, 1843), Lehmannia macrofl agellata Grossu et Lupu, 1962, Bielzia coerulans (M. Bielz, 1851), Deroceras praecox Wiktor,Wiktor, 1966,1966, Cochlodina costata (C. Pfeiff er, 1828), Charpentieria ornata (Rossmässler, 1836), Macrogastra badia (C. Pfeiff er, 1828), Clausilia parvula (Férussac, 1807), Balea perversa (Linnaeus, 1758), Helicodonta obvoluta (O.F. Müller, 1774), Helicigona lapicida (Linnaeus, 1758) and Causa holosericum (Studer, 1820). For each of these species we present current data on local and European distribution, habitat preferences, conservation status and the state of knowledge of life histories. We also delineate the directions of future studies and necessary conservation actions. Key words: conservation, Lower Silesia, Poland, terrestrial malacofauna.
