    (CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845).

    Marian Calendar December 1 - Our Lady of Ratisbon, Bavaria (1842) One of the most famous examples of Our Lady’s bounty in granting favors to the wearers of the Miraculous Medal occurred less than ten years after the medal had been struck. Alphonse Rathisbonne was a French Jew who had no religion. When his brother Theodore became a Catholic and then a priest, Alphonse was filled with aversion. He was a typical intellectual of the nineteenth century, a worshipper of humanity, who sneered at anything spiritual in his pride and ignorance. In November 1841, Alphonse found himself in Rome, although his itinerary had not called for a stop in the Eternal City. There he met Baron de Bussiere. The Baron urgently requested him to wear the Miraculous Medal and to recite daily the prayer of Saint Bernard, “The Memorare.” Alphonse did so in the spirit of acceptance and of dare but without the slightest bit of faith. On January 20, 1842, Monsieur de Bussiere saw Alphonse walking along the street and invited him into his carriage. They stopped at Saint Andrea delle Fratee because the Baron wished to see a priest there. In order to kill time, Rathisbonne entered the church. He was not very much impressed and was walking around rather listlessly. Suddenly the church seemed to be plunged into darkness and all the light concentrated on one chapel. Very much startled he saw there our Blessed Mother bathed in glorious light, her face radiant. He went toward her. She motioned with her right hand for him to kneel.

    Julian the Apostate (331 - 363) A.D. Julian’s Origin and Education14 Julian, the nephew of emperor Constantine the great, was born in Constantinople in 331 A.D.. He grew up in Constantinople and studied under the supervision of enunch Mardonius and Ecebolius the Sophist, who taught him rhetoric and who was a Christian at that time. The emperor made sure that Julian had no pagan masters lest he should be influenced by pagan superstitions and thus Julian grew up as a Christian. In 348 A.D., the two princes were summoned back to Constantinople. There, Julian came in contact with Libanius and other pagan philosophers and from that time onwards he became devoted to the pagan classics. Hearing about the influence of pagan philosophy on Julian, the emperor’s worry was aroused. Julian, between hope and fear, and anxious to lull the awakened suspicions pretended to live a monastic life, yet in private he pursued his philosophical studies. He was even appointed as a deacon in the church where he used to read the sacred writings of the Christians.

In addition to their various styles and structures, hagiographical texts tend to move beyond the classical rhetorical approach. So, it is preferable to regard hagiography as a discourse which was mainly written for the purpose of the production of new heroes through the imitation of Christ and His holy men/women. The hagiographical discourse continued in Early Medieval Arabic Christianity, yet its purpose has expanded to address both Christians and Muslims. Through the examination of the Arabic hagiographical texts of two neo-martyrs, Anthony al-Qurashi and Būlus ibn Raja, it has been revealed that Christians pursued the figure of speech of parrhesia to address the mixed audience. On the one hand, to urge Christians to behold to their faith and, on the other hand, to encourage Muslims to convert. Stories of their miracle working continued after their deaths. These saints should not be confused with Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome (celebrated July 1) or Saints Cosmas and Damian of Arabia (celebrated October 17). November 1: Saint Theodota of Mesopotamia – Saint Theodota was the mother of martyrs Cosmas and Damian. It was Theodota who taught her sons scripture and helped them to become physicians. November 1: Saint Juliana of Cilicia – Saint Juliana was a 4th century Christian who was arrested during the reign of emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311). She was publicly humiliated before her execution. November 2: Saints Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphthonius, Elpidophorus, and Anempodistus – Saint Acindy- nus and those with him lived in Persia in the 4th century during the reign of King Shapur II (309-379. The King initially was tolerant of the Christians in his realm however he began to mistrust them after his enemy Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, distrust turned to hostility when war broke out between the two nations in 337. Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphthonius, Elpidophorus, and Anempodistus were martyred alongside some 7000 other Christians. November 3: Saints Akepsimas, Joseph, and Aithalas – These three saints were Christian leaders in Persia during the reign of King Shapur II. Akepsimas was Bishop of Persia, Joseph was a Priest, and Aithalas a Deacon.

    Études et Travaux XXIX (2016), 75–94 The Murals on Entrance Porch of the Faras Cathedral Stefan Jakobielski Abstract: The aim of the article is to discuss a dating of two murals painted in a tempera technique on the walls of the southern entrance porch of Faras cathedral, namely the repre- sentations of an archangel and St Mercurius on horseback. Both were originally dated to the late tenth or the early eleventh century, but some scholars suggested that these works of arts could have been painted as late as in the late twelfth century or even later. That is at the time when area of the porch together with adjoining staircase had certainly been covered with a roof. Such a dating however, seems largely inadequate in view of the stylistic evidence and the artist’s workshop characteristics, so an effort to restore the original dating has been undertaken in the present article, in the belief that the porch must have been covered earlier in a something way. There follows a suggestion concerning construction of the original roofing. The latter part of the article concerns a possible identification of the archangel’s figure as Gabriel (and not Michael).
