Renew Me, O Eternal Light Renew me O eternal Light, And let my heart and soul be bright, Illumined with the light of grace That issues from your holy face. Ruopp (1672-1708) Music: An English folk song

The Call to Worship The Rev. Jared D. Wilson The earth is the Lord’s! Everything in creation belongs to God. Lift up your eyes! See the mighty works of the Lord!

This is the Lord’s house! All who hope in the Lord will be called children of God. Lift up you hearts! Receive the gracious gifts of the Lord!

This is the hour for worship and song. Lift up your voice! Let us worship God together. +The Hymn CWM RHONDDA God of Grace and God of Glory

+The Opening Prayer Rev. James Let us pray:

Gracious and loving God, we thank you that today you have called us to worship you and learn of you. Satisfy them with your unchanging love. In your presence may we find comfort in sorrow, guidance in perplexity, strength to meet temptation, grace to overcome the fascination of disobedience, and courage to face up to the hostility of this rebellious world. Above all, may we meet Jesus and go out from our worship indwelt by his spirit. This prayer we ask to your glory and in his name. Amen.

The congregation may be seated. Act of Praise Rev. Wilson, handbells; Beverly Woodard, piano Just As I Am Arranged by Sandra Eithun (b. 1967)

The Prayer of Confession The Rev. Valarie P. James

Holy God, As we come into the presence of your divine holiness, we confess our many shortcomings. Our hands are not clean; our actions do not glorify you; our hearts are not pure; our motivations do not glorify you; our words are not true; our deceitfulness does not glorify you; our allegiance is fickle; our idolatry does not glorify you. By your mercy, O God, give us hands that are clean, hearts that are pure, tongues that are true, and souls that worship you alone, that our whole lives may glorify you. Amen.

A time of silence is observed for personal confession.

The response is sung by all:

Note: ‘Kyrie, eleison’ is Greek for ‘Lord, have mercy.’

The pastor offers these words of assurance:

All you who seek God, and who have set your hope on Jesus Christ, hear the good news: We have received forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of God’s grace. As forgiven and beloved children of God, let us set our hope on Christ, and live for the praise of his glory. Amen. PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

The Epistle Lesson Rev. James Ephesians 1:3-14

This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

+The Hymn ABERYSTWYTH Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice

+The Gospel Lesson Rev. Wilson Mark 6:14-29

This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

The Sermon The Rev. Harriet J. Bryan Stop! In the Name of Love

Points to Ponder: The wake is the results we leave behind. And the wake doesn’t lie and it doesn’t care about excuses. It is what it is. No matter what we try to do to explain why, or to justify what the wake is, it still remains. It is what we leave behind and is our record. –Henry Cloud, Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality

The power of writing it [our story] down is that it can help us not only understand what we've been through, but what we've overcome, and how that's changed us, and how it's impacted us, and who we've become because of that, and what kind of legacy we want to leave, and what our purpose is in the world. –Allison Fallon, author of The Power of Writing It Down

The Prayers of the People Rev. Wilson

After each petition, the pastor will conclude: Lord, in your mercy, and all may respond: Hear our prayer.

Together, let us pray for: the people of this congregation… those who suffer and those in trouble… the concerns of this local community… the world, its people, and its leaders… the church universal—its leaders, its members, and its mission… the communion of saints…

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Offering of Our Gifts to God Rev. Bryan Your generosity enables us to make a difference in our community and world. For your safety and convenience, you will find giving stations in the narthex and at the front of the sanctuary. To give online, go to madisonstreetumc.org/giving. Text to give from your phone. The Anthem Hannah Lawrence, soloist Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come, thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount, I’m fixed upon it, Mount of thy redeeming love. Here I find my greatest treasure; Hither by thy help I’ve come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He to rescue me from danger, Bought me with his precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to thee: Prone to wander, Lord, To leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above. -Tom Trenney (b. 1977)
