1 WORSHIP CELEBRATION

CENTERING MOMENT (A time of meditation upon entering Sanctuary) Holy God, as we come into the presence of your divine holiness, we give thanks for your abounding grace. By your mercy, O God, give us hands that are clean, hearts that are pure, tongues that are true, and souls that worship you alone, that our whole lives may glorify you. Amen.

PRELUDE Robert Johnson, Jr. “He’s Preparing Me” Daryl Coley, Carol Antrom

GREETING

CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come, give to the Lord your praises of thanksgiving. People: We come this day, grateful for God’s wondrous gifts to us! Leader: Sing with great enthusiasm of God’s mighty power and love. People: We celebrate that love that frames our lives. Leader: It is a wonderful thing to praise God! ALL: May God’s praise always be in our hearts and in our lives. AMEN.

OPENING HYMN African American Heritage Hymnal #432 “Where Could I Go?” (verses 1 & 2) Living below, in this old sinful world Life here is grand with friends I love so dear Hardly a comfort can afford Comfort I get from God's own word Striving alone to face temptation sore Yet when I face that chilling hand of death Where could I go but to the Lord Where could I go but to the Lord Where could I go but to the Lord? Where could I go? Oh, where could I go seeking a refuge for my soul? Needing a friend to save me in the end, Where could I go but to the Lord?

INVOCATION (in unison) O God our Father, we thank you that today you have called us to worship you and learn of you. You alone know our needs. Satisfy them with your unchanging love. In your presence may we find comfort in sorrow, guidance in perplexity, strength to meet temptation, grace to overcome the fascination of disobedience, and courage to face up to the hostility of this rebellious world. Above all, may we meet Jesus and go out from our worship indwelt by his spirit. This prayer we ask to your glory and in his name. Amen.

SERMON Rev. Dr. Ken J. Walden “TURN TO THE LORD”

INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP, MEMBERSHIP AND COMPANIONSHIP (ALTAR CALL) God’s word has been proclaimed. God invites us to begin a new season of life; to know and begin a relationship with Him through His son, Jesus Christ, so that we might walk in the newness of life. That new relationship begins when you pause right now and tell Christ, “I give myself to you.” If you have already surrendered your life to Christ, you are invited to live your faith through a relationship with Christ’s church. If you are not actively in fellowship with a congregation, we invite you to come forth and join this fellowship called Holman. Give us your hand but God your heart so He might give you a new start. We will embrace you with the love of Christ and share in your spiritual journey. If you have strayed away from a past commitment to Christ, are struggling with a life situation that causes you great concern, or you just want to give God some thanks and praise, we invite you to contact the church office (323.703.5868). We can support you in a time of prayer, accompany you as you tell God of your desire to be in relationship, assist you in the renewal of your vows for Christian discipleship. We are here to meet you in the journey. May this be a time for reconciliation and renewal in your life.

OFFERTORY PRAYER IN THANKSGIVING FOR OUR TITHES & OFFERINGS Generous and Giving God, you have poured your blessings on us as the rain soaks the sun-parched grass of our lawns. You have lavished us with redemption, forgiveness, and grace. When you send the rain to water the grass, you expect growth in return. Remind us this day, as we make our gifts to you, that we have been blessed for a purpose – that we might be a blessing to others. May we grow in compassion, in mercy, in longing for justice and love, as Christ loved us. In that holy name, we pray. Amen. “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
