The Christian Progress Dahlgren United Methodist Church JANUARY 2020

A Prayer for the New Year

The prayer below by Billy Graham appeared first in The Saturday Evening Post in 2008. It is still relevant on all points over a decade later. (Copied by permission from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association)

Our Father and our God, as we stand at the beginning of this Our Vision: new year, we confess our need of your presence and guidance as we face the future. Reaching All We each have our hopes and expectations for the year that is ahead of us—but you alone know what it holds for us, and only you can give us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet with the Love its challenges. So, help us to humbly put our hands into your hand, and to trust you and to seek your will for our lives during this coming year. of Christ

Amid life’s uncertainties in the days ahead, assure us of the certainty of your unchanging love. Thomas G. Lee, Sr., Amid life’s inevitable disappointments and heartaches, help us to turn to you for the stability and comfort we will need. Pastor

Amid life’s temptations and the pull of our stubborn self-will, help us not to lose our way but to have the courage to do what is right in your sight regardless of the cost. P.O. Box 1797 And amid our daily preoccupations and pursuits, open our eyes to the sorrows and injustices of Dahlgren, VA 22448 our hurting world, and help us to respond with compassion and sacrifice to those who are friendless and in need. Office Hours:

We pray for our nation and its leaders during these difficult times, and for all those who seek to Monday-Thursday bring peace and justice to our troubled world. We pray especially for your protection on all 8:30AM - 3:30PM those who serve in our armed forces, and we thank you for their commitment to defend our freedoms, even at the cost of their own lives. Be with their families also and assure them of your Church: (540) 663-2230 love and concern for them. Emergency Contact: Bring our divided nation together and give us a greater vision of what you would have us be. (540) 263-2238 As we look back over this past year, we thank you for your goodness to us—far beyond what we [email protected] have deserved. May we never presume on your past goodness or forget all your mercies to us, but may they instead lead us to repentance, and to a new commitment to make you the Email: foundation and center of our lives in the year ahead. [email protected]

Finally, we thank you for the promise and hope of this new year, and we look forward to it with expectancy and faith. These things we ask in the name of our Savior, who by His life, death and Website: resurrection has given us hope both for this world and the world to come. www.dahlgrenumc.org

Amen.

JANUARY MISSION FOCUS SOUPER BOWL Happy New Year! It’s time for Souper Bowl 2019 and it’s GAME ON! The Goal is to fill up the King George Local Food Pantry! Our yearly goal is 3000 lbs., and we hope to raise 1000 lbs. of that through the Souper Bowl contest. Here’s how it will go: The congregation will be divided into (2) two teams. Names ending with A-G will be Team Angels and names ending with H-Z will be Team Saints. There will be labeled boxes located in the atrium for each team. Every 50 pounds donated by your team scores a touchdown and every 25 pounds scores a field goal. The finale will be a Soup Luncheon held after the 11:00 service on Sunday, February 2nd hosted by the Mission Team.

Let’s have fun with this and support our Food Pantry!!

BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRISTMAS EVENT Thanks to everyone for your prayers. The first annual Believe in Jesus Christmas Event held on December 14th was a great success with more than 170 people attending. The event included the DUMC and Friends Band, the singing of Christmas Carols, a play about the Nativity, crafts, photo opportunities, snacks, face painting, an appearance by Young Miss King George and Santa. Heartfelt thanks go out to all the volunteers who were responsible for the success. With more than 45 volunteers assisting before and during the event, there are too many to list individually.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
