(2) The membership of THE FLORIDA TRIBE OF EASTERN CREEK INDIANS is composed principally of persons who are not members of any other North American Indian tribe. (3) A list of all known current members of THE FLORIDA TRIBE OF EASTERN CREEK INDIANS, based on the tribes acceptance of these members and the tribes own defined membership criteria is attached to this petition and made a part of it. Humans construct humanity and personhood partially via interactions with other-than-human persons, such as animals, plants, and objects. I examine ritualized interactions between humans and others-than-human in a southeastern Indigenous "natureculture," exploring the intersections of ontology, personhood, and performance practice. Pvlvcekolv, an animistic Florida-based tribal town with a ceremonial Fire that pre-dates European Contact, maintains a centuries-old ritual tradition, the busk. Sometimes known as "Green Corn Ceremonialism," many Native communities share this tradition, including ii Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Yuchi, and other Creek peoples historically and in the present day. Performing the songs, dances, and ritual actions of the busk places participants into dialogue with other-than-human persons. -

These wars, which took place between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, were driven by many forces, ranging from the clash of global empires to the basic need to protect one’s home and family. They were part of the great American economic and territorial expansion of the nineteenth century, and were greatly influenced by the national debate over the issue of slavery. In particular, the Second Seminole War stands out as the nation’s longest, costli- est, and deadliest Indian war. Lasting almost seven years, the conflict cost thousands of lives and millions of dollars, yet faded from the nation’s collective memory soon after the fighting ended. It is a story that should not have been forgotten, a story that can teach us lessons that are still relevant today. It is in hopes of restoring a portion of that lost mem- ory that the Seminole Wars Foundation offers this short history of one of our nation’s longest wars. Seminole Origins The ancestors of the Seminole Indians were primarily Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama who migrated to Florida during the 18th century after the decimation of the aboriginal natives under Spanish rule. -

This was the most elegant and meticulous publication on American Indian art ever offered for sale. Its publication came at a time when American Indian art of the West and Southwest was prominent in the public imagination. Of particular interest to the art world in that decade were the new watercolors being made by Kiowa and Pueblo artists; a place was being made for their display within the realm of the American “fine arts” traditions in museums and art galleries all over the country. Becoming Tribal Members in the South (Under the direction of Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green) As a third race in the Jim Crow South, Indians struggled to maintain their political sovereignty and separate identity in the face of racial legislation and discrimination. To protect their status as tribal members and to defend their resources from outsiders, Indians developed membership criteria that reflected their older notions of kinship and culture, but also the new realities of a biracial world. This dissertation examines the responses of four southeastern Indian peoples to the problem of defining who legally belonged to Indian tribes. Although the Pamunkeys, Catawbas, Eastern Band of Cherokees, and Florida Seminoles dealt with similar questions regarding reservation residency, cultural affinity, intermarriage, “blood,” and race, each developed different requirements for tribal membership based on their unique histories and relationships with federal and state officials. The varying experiences of these southeastern tribes belie the notion of an essential “Indian,” and instead show that membership in a tribe is a historically-constructed and constantly-evolving process. -

SMALLWOOD BLACK SLAVERY AMONG 1HE CREEKS AND SEMINOLES The Five Civilized Tribes practiced slavery in various forms: in some, it was very similar to the white practice; in others it was hardly recognizable as slavery at all. The life of a slave before Indian removal to the West was one of indolence and pliancy compared to a later life subjected to severe slave codes and prejudices. These growing prejudices and slave laws that were developed among the Indians as the aristocratic mixed bloods sought to alter the slavery of the original Indians to the genuine servitude that the neighboring states exercised.l The Creek Indians occupied and claimed lands in the present states of Georgia and Alabama. They were linquistically varied; most were of Muskogean stock. They were not geographically divided according to language, but their towns were divided along the Alabama, the Challahooche and Flint rivers. Called the Upper and Lower Creeks, this geographical designation persisted until the removal of the Creeks to the West in the nineteenth century destroyed it.2 It cannot be determined when slavery was first introduced in the Creek Territory. However, in 1540 the first Negro entered the area with Hernando De Soto when his party explored the lands of the Creeks. De Soto left behind suffering, destruction, deserters, strays, and one Negro who set up housekeeping among the Indians and probably fathered children. 3 All evidence indicates he was accepted as an equal but probably not given tribal citizenship.4 As English colonies developed along the Atlantic coast, blacks became more numerous among the Creek Indians; they were runaway slaves from white plantations in the South. -
