ENDINO's EARTHWORM “UNEARTHED” Liner Notes ENDINO'S EARTHWORM “UNEARTHED” Liner Notes BANDCAMP EXCLUSIVE: Released November 6, 2020 COMPLETE REMIX/RESTORATION of my semi-obscure 2nd solo record from 1992, intended as a follow-up and continuation of Angle Of Attack (1989), plus a half-hour's worth of bonus tracks from the same creative period, 1985-1996. With hindsight I later realized Jim Blanchard's cover art was better than the music, because my engineering and original mixes were not great. But this has now been remedied! Restoring this was quite a journey. I even had Jim update the cover art, because it's kind of a new record now. I hope you enjoy it. Recorded by Jack Endino at Studio Endino, Reciprocal Recording, Hanzsek Audio, Private Radio, and the Crocodile. Remixed and mastered 2020 by JE. -- Guitar & Vocs: Jack Endino, except on "Edge Of Unease" the guitar is Greg Gilmore. -- Drums: Barrett Martin, Greg Gilmore, "Matt C", Jack. -- Bass: Rob Skinner, Pat Pedersen, Daniel House, Jack. -- Misc percussion: Barrett, Greg, Jack. -- Cover art: Jim Blanchard (1992 orig, updated 2020). THE SONGS 01 How Much Time REMIX -- Recorded by Jack and Rich Hinklin (that's him saying "you're rolling") on 1-inch 16-track at Reciprocal, Dec 1989. Remixed 2020. This is drummer Barrett Martin's earliest released performance! He joined Skin Yard right after we did this session (also songs 2, 3 and 5). Jack - Guitar/vocals, Barrett Martin - drums, Rob Skinner - bass. Written by Jack (BMI). 02 Talk Yourself Blind REMIX -- Recorded by Jack and Rich Hinklin on 1-inch 16- track at Reciprocal, Dec 1989. Remixed 2020. Jack - Guitar/vocals, Barrett Martin - drums, Rob Skinner - bass. Written by Jack (BMI). 03 American Nightmare Revisited REMIX -- Recorded by Jack and Rich Hinklin on 1- inch 16-track at Reciprocal, Dec 1989. Remixed 2020. Originally written for Skin Yard, and sort-of-released as a bonus track on our original Hallowed Ground CD. I didn't like that version (and SY never played it) so I "took the song back" and re-recorded it with new words, although I kept the title and one line from Ben's lyrics ("Give up your ass for God, and send in your dues"). Jack - Guitar/vocals, Barrett Martin - drums, Rob Skinner - bass. Written by Jack (BMI). 04 Someone REMIX -- Recorded on Otari 8-track at Reciprocal, 1988. Remixed 2020. Thanks to Stone Gossard for letting me record using his Marshall amp while it was set up in the studio, probably late at night after one of the Mother Love Bone demo sessions. Jack - vocals, guitar, bass, drums. Written by Jack (BMI). 05 Eat Yr Friends REMIX -- Recorded by Jack and Rich Hinklin on 1-inch 16-track at Reciprocal, Dec 1989. Remixed 2020. A pleasant song about eating your friends (and family). HEY, MAN, IT'S ABOUT CAPITALISM. Jack - Guitar/vocals, Barrett Martin - drums, Rob Skinner - bass. Written by Jack Endino (riffs/vocs) and Rob Skinner (for the bass line!) 06 See Right Thru Me REMIX -- Recorded on Otari 8-track at Reciprocal, 1988. Remixed 2020. Thanks to Stone Gossard for letting me record using his Marshall amp while it was set up in the studio, probably late at night after one of the Mother Love Bone demo sessions. (Probably same night as song 4.) Jack - vocals, guitar, bass, drums. Written by Jack (BMI). 07 Inside My Head (Vocal version) REMIX -- Recorded on Otari 8-track at Reciprocal, 1988. Remixed 2020. Now with vocals! They were recorded at the time, but I chickened out on using them. This was actually an almost-Skin Yard song. The main verse guitar riff is by Matt Cameron, some of the changes and the bridge are mine, most of the bass parts are by Daniel House, but Skin Yard dropped it so I had to do it myself, and write words for it. Jack - vocals, guitar, bass, drums, lyrics. Music by Matt Cameron, Jack Endino, Daniel House. 08 Fly On Your Windshield REMIX -- Recorded in my basement ("studio Endino"), 13 Sept 1985. Remixed 2020. This entire song was improvised on the spot, in one take, with guitar and drums, and was never played again. Drummer Greg Gilmore stopped by, and I said "I have some riffs" and fortunately I recorded the whole jam on my TEAC 4-track (drums on one track!), and then went back to learn it so I could overdub the implied bass line and some lead gtr bits. Copied it to 8-track to add vocals. Being improvised it was full of clinkers and clams, and is admittedly a bit lo-fi, but I was never able to capture the song again, so I subtitled it "DEMO" originally. But having TECHNOLOGY now, I fixed a few of the most egregious clams. I also took the guitars/drums/bass back one tape generation, by syncing the vocals from the 8 track with the original tracks from the 4-track rather than using the second-generation copied tracks from the 8-track, got all that? The long bonus jam "Bold Leaps" added at the end of Angle of Attack is from the same day, and same creative method. Jack - Gtrs, bass, vocals; Greg Gilmore - drums. Music, lyrics by Jack (BMI). 09 Suspension Of Disbelief REMASTER -- Recorded in my basement, 1985. Daniel and Greg came by, eyes sparkling rather suggestively, and said "LET'S JAM." This was also 100% improvised on the spot, and recorded in stereo straight to a hi-bias cassette! Greg Gilmore (drums) is really the lead instrument here. Sometimes, under certain conditions, this is my favorite track on the record (YMMV, haha), and inspired me to start Beyond Captain Orca (beyondcaptainorca.bandcamp.com) decades later! (With thanks to 5-Track and Patrick Lenon.) Jack - guitar, Daniel House - bass, Greg Gilmore - drums. "Written" by Endino - Gilmore - House. 10 Buried Deep -- Previously unreleased. Drums, congas and bass recorded to Otari 8- track (the former Reciprocal one) in my basement, 1992. Gtrs recorded late 90s, vocals even later. Mixed 2020. Barrett wrote most of the music here, one of his very first compositions, but my words and melody took a while. Almost used on Permanent Fatal Error but it didn't fit, and anyway it belongs with this earlier era's material: right after Skin Yard broke up (Ben going to Gruntruck) the three of us WERE Earthworm for a time, so this would have been the first really collaborative Earthworm song. Played once, instrumentally, at an Earthworm show we did in Dec 1992. Jack - Guitar/vocals, Barrett Martin - drums/congas, Pat Pedersen - bass. Written by Barrett (music) and Jack (vocal melody/lyrics). 11 Fried, Baked Or Scrambled -- Recorded on Otari 8-track in my basement, 1992. Remixed 2020. An earlier mix of this recording appeared on the Ptolemaic Terrascope Benefit CD, "Succour". This was written by me for Skin Yard in 1985. The working title was "Dry Dream" because the actual main riff came to me in a dream! A 4-track Skin Yard version, with Ben vocals/lyrics, was released as "She's So Cold" on my original Angle Of Attack CASSETTE release on Joe Ross's End Game records, but the band played it at one show and dropped it, so the song reverted back to me and (eventually) Earthworm. Jack - guitar, Barrett Martin - drums, Pat Pedersen - bass. Music by Jack (BMI). 12 Be Bop From Hell -- Recorded to TEAC 4-track in my basement, 28 Feb 1986. Mixed 2020. An earlier mix of this appeared on the original EndGame Records cassette version of Angle Of Attack. One of a series of songwriting experiments I dubbed the "Atonals" because the riffs and rhythms were intentionally off-kilter. "Atonal #1" became "Scratch" on the first Skin Yard album. "Atonal #2" eventually became the title track on Permanent Fatal Error. I think #3 might have become the title track on Angle Of Attack. This one was once "Atonal #4". A certain young hotshot named Matt played the drums. (Check's in the mail, bro!) Jack - guitars, bass; Matt - drums. Music: Jack (BMI). 13 Folk Tune Number Two -- Previously unreleased. Recorded on Otari 8-track in my basement, 1992. Mixed 2012. Jack - guitar and slide bass, Barrett Martin - drums, Pat Pedersen - bass. Music by Jack (BMI). 14 Mud Bay (Head Of The Dog) -- Previously unreleased (sort of, read on). Drums and bass recorded by Rich Hinklin at Reciprocal Recording, late 80s sometime. Rich submixed the drums to stereo. I transferred the drums (2 tracks) and bass (1 track) to my 8-track and added a bunch of guitar. Percussion was added by Greg and myself. Mixed 2020. A copy of this same original drum/bass recording (without my tracks) was taken in a totally different direction by Greg Gilmore and became the title track on his solo CD "Doghead". My version appears here now with Greg's approval! Paul Hinklin (from Sadhappy) - bass, Greg Gilmore - drums/perc, Jack - gtr/perc. Music by Paul-Greg-Jack. 15 Edge Of Unease -- One of a series of odd, meditative improvs recorded in my basement in 1985-86 by Greg Gilmore and myself (see "Post-X" and "Sideways Savannah" on Angle Of Attack). Greg is actually the one playing my guitar here, I'm on bass! This is from a cassette mix I made at the time... I could never beat the vibe of it. Previously released on the EndGame cassette version of Angle Of Attack. Greg Gilmore - guitar/perc, Jack - bass/perc. Music by Greg/Jack. 16 Salvation (LIVE 1996) -- Previously unreleased. Recorded at the Crocodile Cafe, 26 Apr 1996, to ADAT with help from sound man Jim Anderson.

The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • Antioch University COMMON THREAD
Antioch University COMMON THREAD JANUARY 25, 2018 SANTA BARBARA CAMPUS & COMMUNITY BEGIN RECOVERY FROM THOMAS FIRE AND MONTECITO FLOOD DISASTERS The Antioch University Santa Barbara campus and surrounding community was significantly impacted by the Thomas Fire -now measured as the largest wildfire in California history- in December 2017, and by the subsequent floods and mudslides in Montecito on January 9, 2018. At the time of writing this, twenty lives were confirmed lost and three are missing as a result of the mudslide tragedy. Highway 101, the only highway route in and out of the city toward the south, remains closed as Caltrans clears mud and debris. To say the least, our entire campus community has been tremendously impacted by the injury and loss of people we may know. In addition, many of us have experienced damage and loss of homes and property, as well as the impact of damaged infrastructure, isolation or disruption of transportation, and local economic impact. Antioch University has responded in a number of ways to generously support students, staff, and faculty in Santa Barbara. For example, AU increased the number of pro Zoom accounts for each academic department which allow faculty to include all students in their classes so that they may make academic progress. We remain grateful to first responders, search and rescue crews, and the current search and recovery teams in our area. The compassion and kindness demonstrated by the recovery teams has been appreciated as we mourn the loss of those in our community, and acknowledge the profound impact on each one of us.

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

  • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

Penso siano riusciti a restare vitali.
