Over the horizon of many decades up to a few centuries, the natural structure of the forests could be restored, and the parts of these areas may gain old growth forests character. Key words: old-growth forests, Western Carpathians, Slovakia, ecological characteristics, protection ÚVOD V dávnej minulosti bola prevažná časť terajšieho územia Slovenska porastená prales- mi. V nižších polohách v rovinatých údoliach väčších riek sa vyskytovali prirodzené bezlesia, vytvorené a udržiavané početnými stádami veľkých kopytníkov – zubor hrivnatý, pratur, divý kôň, jeleň lesný (van Wieren, 1995; Vera, 2000; Konvička, 2005, 2010). Prvé prechodné a trvalé praveké osady vznikali na miestach neporas- tených lesom. Podľa Ptolemaiovej geografie (2. storočie po Kr.) boli riadne organi- zované osady na jeho mape vyznačené len na južnom okraji karpatských predhorí. Znamená to, že od týchto osád na sever až po vyššie polohy Karpát neboli vtedy väč- šie stále ľudské sídla, boli tu len pralesy bez systematického osídlenia. Správy He- rodotove, Tacitove a Plíniove, ako aj mapy a zemepisné dáta Ptolemaiove dokazujú, že územie Slovenska v storočiach pred a po našom letopočte bolo pokryté pralesmi. Hospodárske využívanie pralesov začalo v období keď Rimania ovládli tok Dunaja a obsadili dolné polohy hlavných slovenských riek (Hron, Váh, Nitra, Ipeľ). Ťažba týchto pralesov trvala asi do polovice 5. storočia, kedy boli vyrúbané prevažne du- bové a bukové pralesy v údolí väčších riek. Do polovice 12. storočia boli odstránené zvyšky pralesov v nížinách a pahorkatinách (200 – 300 m n. m.). Od 13. storočia sa zintenzívnila kolonizácia vyššie položených oblastí Slovenska (nad 300 m n. m.), 152 153 čím sa zvýšil nápor aj na pralesy vo vyšších polohách. V 13. storočí na území Slo- boli a sú lesy intenzívne využívané. Pralesy sa zachovali len výnimočne, tvoria iba venska vzniklo vyše 800 nových osád, v 14. storočí vyše 700 a v 15. storočí pribudlo nepatrnú časť súčasnej krajiny a sú veľmi vzácne osobitne v západnej, strednej ďalších asi 400, pričom okolité pralesy v chotároch týchto obcí boli zväčša vyrúba- a juhovýchodnej časti kontinentu (Parviainen et al., 2000; Wesołowski, 2005; né a premenené na poľnohospodárske pozemky, najmä na pasienky. Ešte v polovici minulého storočia Rozsiahlejšie plochy pralesov sa zachovali aj v boreálnej zóne, hlavne v Rusku, ale pokrývali pralesy na Slovensku podstatne väčšiu výmeru, najmä na severovýchode aj ďalších oblastiach (Škandinávia). Napriek ojedinelosti a významu pralesov neboli krajiny (Vihorlat, Východné Beskydy, Poloniny, Popričný, Nastaz a pod.), v menšej v mnohých regiónoch Európy identifikované a poznatky o ich rozšírení a rozlohe na miere aj inde (napr. Poľana, Nízke Tatry, Veľká Fatra). Podstatná časť týchto plôch národnej úrovni sú ojedinelé. Aj z týchto dôvodov sa v pralesoch stále ťaží drevo bola postupne vyťažená

Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 37–52, 2021, Zagreb. From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, 1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biok- ovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previ- ous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list. The first study of the Coleoptera of Babia Góra was by ROTTENBERG th (1868), which included data on 102 species. During the 19 century, INTERESTING BEETLES (COLEOPTERA) IN THE BABIA GÓRA NP 213 several other papers including data on beetles from Babia Góra were published: 37 species were recorded from the area by KIESENWETTER (1869), a single species by NOWICKI (1870) and 47 by KOTULA (1873).

  • Dartington Report on Beetles 2015
    Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2015 by Dr Martin Luff 1. Introduction and Methods The majority of beetle recording in 2015 was concentrated on three sites and habitats: 1. Further sampling of moss on the Deer Park wall (SX794635), as mentioned in my 2014 report. This was done on two dates in March by MLL and again in October, aided by Messrs Tony Allen and Clive Turner, both experienced coleopterists. 2. Beetles associated with the decomposing body of a dead deer. The recently (accidentally) killed deer was acquired on 12th May by Mike Newby who pegged it out under wire netting in the small wood adjacent to 'Flushing Meadow', here referred to as 'Flushing Copse' (SX802625). The body was lifted regularly and beaten over a collecting tray, initially every week, then fortnightly and then monthly until early October. In addition, two pitfall traps were installed just beside the corpse, with a small amount of preservative in each. These were emptied each time the site was visited. 3. Water beetles sampled on 28th October, together with Tony Allen and Clive Turner, from the ponds and wheel-rut puddles on Berryman's Marsh (SX799615). Other work again included the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills and Berrymans Marsh at the end of October, thanks to Mike Newby and his volunteer helpers. 2. Results In all, 203 beetle species were recorded in 2015, of which 85 (41.8%) were additions to the Dartington list. This increase over the 32% new in 2014 (Luff, 2015) results partly from sampling habitats (carrion, fresh-water) not previously examined.

RESEARCH SUMMARY Yorkshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group YorKshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group (YDBMAG) started in 2002 as an initiative betWeen Butterfly Conservation, the YorKshire Naturalists’ Union and the YorKshire Dales National ParK Authority (YDNPA). Its aims and objectives are as folloWs: • To advise on habitat action plans affecting Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Lepidoptera; • To devise species action plans for Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) Lepidoptera; • To monitor LBAP lepidopteran species. Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 243–250, 2021, Zagreb. Six species of grass moths (Crambidae) were recorded for the first time in Croatia. Chilo luteellus, Chilo pulverosellus and Thopeutis galleriellus were recorded in the Neretva River delta, showing the importance and great biodiversity of this Ramsar site, one of the largest Mediterranean wetlands. Euchromius rayatellus was recorded near Žmanska Lakes, a wetland area on Island Dugi otok. Two montane species were also recorded for the first time in the country, Catoptria combinella from Mt. Risnjak and Udea cyanalis from four montane areas across Croatia. The known range of occurrence of each of the recorded species in the Balkan peninsula is accordingly expanded. The discovery of these species shows the need for additional Microlepidoptera surveys in the country. With these records, the fauna of Crambidae of Croatia has now risen to 218 species. This number is however probably far from final and new surveys are expected to reveal additional species for the fauna of Croatia.
