    WISBECH CANAL ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION DESKTOP STUDY SUMMARY APRIL 2010 This report is a summary of the desk-top study that was carried out in relation to the environmental investigation of Wisbech Canal. A desk top summary is research of map, documents and previous reports relating to a site. This report outlines the site history, previous monitoring and site investigation, contamination and the scope of the investigation. This report is a non-technical summary to provide an introduction into the research behind the environmental investigation. 1 Wisbech Canal Study Summary CHAPTER 1. SITE HISTORY The site which will be investigated is the former Wisbech canal. The canal was 5.25 miles long and extended from The River Nene at Wisbech to Outwell where it joined Well Creek and connected with the River Ouse at Salter's Load Sluice. Because of the low level of the Fens, the canal was built on embankments for some of its length. The canal did not have its own water supply, but was refilled with water at each high tide. Figure 1 shows a diagram of the canal and its bridges and locks. Faulkner 43 Oaks Drive, Colchester, Essex CO3 3PS Phone 01206 767023 E-mail [email protected] THE MINISTER’S LETTER As a measure of our concern about the lack of progress on the repairs to Welches Dam Lock and on other outstanding matters, our Secretary Ivan Cane felt the need to air these matters in higher quarters and, on 24 August last year, wrote to Richard Benyon MP, the Minister at DEFRA who deals with the Environment Agency. Ivan’s letter featured first on Welches Dam, which was last repaired by the National River Authority but with a major input of volunteer labour, and was formally re- opened by Lady Helen De Freitas on 30 March 1991. The lock has effectively been closed since the middle of 2006 as it was in a dangerous state and the Environment Agency has been trying to disclaim any responsibility for the work, as the lock is not included in the schedule of waterways in the Anglian Water Authority’s Act of 1977 which supposedly governs its responsibilities. Ivan’s letter went on to touch on other causes for concern such as the state of the Old Bedford River which has deteriorated seriously and is no longer passable, on the state of locks on the Great Ouse, such as Castle Mill and Offord Locks which have seen emergency closures, on the situation on the river Stour where volunteers and prisoners from Hollesley Bay Prison have been prevented from continuing with the restoration work at Stratford St.

The books are mostly narrow octavos, interleaved with blotting paper. Rennie seems to have carried them with him on his frequent travels and to have filled them in pencil, rewriting in ink, often on top of the pencil, at some more convenient moment. Rennie received much of his information orally, and in consequence the spelling of place names is not always accurate, and some places at least cannot be certainly identified. The notebooks also contain addresses, booklists (especially of the early technological books and medieval chronicles in which he was interested), and notes of expenses for his travels which often make it clear where he went and when. This series of notebooks does not contain those which relate exclusively to subject represented elsewhere amongst the papers. These have been placed with other relevant material. MSS. 19831­19902 are arranged chronologically, and all relate to a number of different works. 19903­25, also in chronological order, relate to specific works. 19926­31 are miscellaneous notes of receipts, calculations etc. All are octavo unless otherwise stated.
