Southern Railway stations in South London The south London area stations of Southern Region of British Railways and its constituents tend to be somewhat neglected, perhaps due to the prevalent suburban electric services, but comprised some fine examples of former company architecture. The following pictures were all taken in August 1973; a few of the sites have since disappeared, many others surely much modernised by now, and some have even been nicely restored...... First, we look at the former South Eastern Railway branch line from Purley to Caterham. Here is Kenley, whose cottage-style station house with very steep-pitched roof and gothic detailing is now a listed building, but privately owned. It dates from the construction of the Caterham Railway in 1856 and is by architect Richard Whittall. Below is Whyteleafe, (left) down side waiting room and footbridge, and the signal box and level crossing at Whyteleafe South...... The signalbox nameboard shows that the station had been re-signed with modern British Rail white enamel plates; in late 1972 I found one of the much more attractive 1950-era station nameplates for sale in an antique shop near Paddington station, for the pricely sum of £2.50p. In contrast the teminus station building at Caterham still displayed its “Southern Electric” enamelware...... Here are two more views at Caterham, with the SE&CR wooden signalbox at right...... Moving on to Anerley, this is an ex London Brighton & South Coast Railway station on its line from London Bridge to West Croydon, just to the north of Norwood Junction. At least part of the main building is thought to date from the line opening in 1839. -

River Brue’s Historic Bridges By David Jury The River Brue’s Historic Bridges In his book "Bridges of Britain" Geoffrey Wright writes: "Most bridges are fascinating, many are beautiful, particularly those spanning rivers in naturally attractive settings. The graceful curves and rhythms of arches, the texture of stone, the cold hardness of iron, the stark simplicity of iron, form constant contrasts with the living fluidity of the water which flows beneath." I cannot add anything to that – it is exactly what I see and feel when walking the rivers of Somerset and discover such a bridge. From source to sea there are 58 bridges that span the River Brue, they range from the simple plank bridge to the enormity of the structures that carry the M5 Motorway. This article will look at the history behind some of those bridges. From the river’s source the first bridge of note is Church Bridge in South Brewham, with it’s downstream arch straddling the river between two buildings. Figure 1 - Church Bridge South Brewham The existing bridge is circa 18th century but there was a bridge recorded here in 1258. Reaching Bruton, we find Church Bridge described by John Leland in 1525 as the " Est Bridge of 3 Archys of Stone", so not dissimilar to what we have today, but in 1757 the bridge was much narrower “barely wide enough for a carriage” and was widened on the east side sometime in the early part of the 19th century. Figure 2 - Church Bridge Bruton Close by we find that wonderful medieval Bow Bridge or Packhorse Bridge constructed in the 15th century with its graceful slightly pointed chamfered arch. -

The Society of Advocates in Aberdeen Aberdeen University Review Aberdeen University Review, LVI, no. 195, Spring 1996 THE SOCIETY OF ADVOCATES IN ABERDEEN By Dorothea Bruce As Executive Secretary and Librarian to The Society of Advocates in Aberdeen I often have to conduct visitors round Advocates' Hall and exhibit some of the Society's treasures. After they have overcome their initial surprise at finding such a handsome building tucked away in Concert Court, which is only a back alley, visitors usually want to know why and when the Society was founded, and why its members are set apart from the other solicitors in Scotland by being dignified by the title 'advocate'. No date of its actual foundation can be determined, original records having been lost in a fire at the Record Office in Castle Street in 1721, but one must assume that the Society grew out of the natural expression of the desire of members of any profession to incorporate themselves for the purpose of mutual assistance and the exchange of professional expertise. As to why the members call themselves 'advocates', William Kennedy, in his Annals of Aberdeen published in 1818, states that 'the practitioners before the courts of adjudicature (in Aberdeen) have for a period of upwards of two hundred and fifty years, been distinguished by the title of advocates, which appeared to be sanctioned by many public deeds, and by judicial proceedings in the courts of record: but by what authority it had originally been conferred upon them we have not been informed.'1 (See also Appendix I) The most convincing theory in explanation of our members' right to the term 'advocate' appears in Scottish Notes and Queries and is attributed to an unnamed 'learned friend, a recognized authority on such matters.' It is suggested that before the institution of the College of Justice by James V, in 1532, Edinburgh was the seat of the great Ecclesiastical Court of the Archdeacon of the Lothians, and those who practised there were Advocates. -

In analyzing the development of the Ameri- cas, Sokoloff and Engerman famously argued that factor endowments like geography and population density profoundly infl uenced the evolution of important economic institutions. The cultivation of highly profi table staple crops—and a readily available pool of exploitable labor—created high levels of inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean. Powerful groups of infl u- ential insiders had little to gain (and often much to lose) from open incorpora- tion, public schooling, expanded suffrage, and other institutions associated with long- term development. In North America (especially in the U.S. North and Canada), environmental conditions prevented the cultivation of staple crops, which encouraged entrepreneurs to focus on raising long- term land values via settlement. -

From its ancient origins to medieval burghs and King Robert The Bruce, from the Jacobite connections to the expansion in the Edwardian and Victorian times, the ‘Silver City by the Golden Sands’ has a long, important, and interesting history with many of its people contributing to the wider world. The city started out as three separate royal burghs – Old Aberdeen, New Aberdeen and Torry plus the parish of Woodside – which expanded and merged together to form the city as a whole. There was a major expansion in the Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras as the city made its first fortunes based on fishing, granite quarrying and shipbuilding and many of the grand buildings were built during these times. It also included the main thoroughfare, Union Street, which was raised up away from the mud and dirt and built on a series of bridges – it was such a major project it almost bankrupted the city! Faulkner 43 Oaks Drive, Colchester, Essex CO3 3PS Phone 01206 767023 E-mail [email protected] ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 44 th Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 18 May based on St. Mary’s Church Hall, Westry, March in Cambridgeshire. The day started off with a visit to the nearby boatyard operated by Fox Narrow Boats where we were met by Paula Syred, daughter of the late Charlie Fox who had established the business in 1959. Members were given an interesting presentation of how the company had developed before looking round the marina and being able to inspect two of the current hire boats – Leisurely Fox and Silver Fox - both of which looked extremely smart. And then it was back to St. Marys where we were fortunate in being able to look round the recently restored church that had suffered an arson attack four years ago. Members then enjoyed an excellent luncheon laid on by Margaret Martin and her team before turning to the formal business of the day. 2 The Director’s Report and Accounts for the year ending 30 June 2013 were duly, approved before Alan Faulkner, David Mercer and Jeff Walters were re-elected as Directors and John Cordran was re-elected as Accounts Scrutineer. Chris Black then gave a full report about the progress on the North Walsham & Dilham Canal and the meeting concluded with a report by Chairman Roger which centred round the Environment Agency’s reduction in dredging and maintenance. -
