    1. Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety Austrian Wine statistics report 1.2 Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety 2 The data in this section is based on the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, as well as feedback from the wine-producing federal states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and Wien (Vienna). The main source of data for the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine was the Wein-ONLINE system operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMNT). Data from the remaining federal states was collected by means of a questionnaire (primary data collection). Information relating to the (approved) nurseries was provided by the Burgenland and Lower Austrian Chambers of Agriculture and the Styrian state government (Agricultural Research Centre). According to the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, Austria’s vineyards occupied 45,574 hectares. The planted vineyard area was 45,439 ha, which corresponds to 94 ha less (or a 0.2% decrease) in comparison to the 2009 Survey of Area under Vine. The long-running trend that suggested a shift away from white wine and towards red was quashed by the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine. While the white wine vineyard area increased by 2.3% to 30,502 ha compared to 2009, the red wine area decreased by 4.9% to 14,937 ha. Figure 1 shows the evolution of Austrian viticulture after the Second World War. The largest area under vine was recorded in 1980 at 59,432 ha. From 1980 onwards, the white wine vineyard area has continuously decreased, while the red wine vineyard area has expanded.

This Text Is Now Merely on Armenia, Armenia Lingering on My Mind

This text is now merely on Armenia, Armenia lingering on my mind, Armenia I had always wanted to know, the country I have visited but briefly once and would love to know more in depth... Before I move on to other subjects, here is some more about Sergei Parajanov, a titan whose work is becoming more and more known, despite his once relative obscurity and his untimely demise at 66; Parajanov who I talked about in my previous text but not enough as there can never be enough reminiscing of someone whose life and creativity mean the “refusal of time and empire”, someone grudgingly taken by the Grim Reaper as He, the Reaper, knows only too well that great Sergei remains ever victorious until the End of Time. Mona Lisa collages by Parajanov Stills from the film The Colour of Pomegranate with lithe, unearthly Georgian actress Sofiko (Sophia) Chiaureli notably in six male and female roles. The ethereal Sophiko passed away in 2008, age 70, in Tbilisi. Take note of the playfulness and celebratory traits of a man who roughed it so hard in life, when he comes up with this collage: “I sold my dacia!” (summer house or weekender). Only someone of limitless inner freedom could create and artwork like this in face of persistent adversities. This looks so much more like Felini rather than oppressed artist in the Soviet regime... “I sold my dacia!”, collage by Parajanov collage by Parajanov To finish this segment on Parajanov, let us read what J. Hoberman wrote in May 2018 about this dazzling film poem that Sayat Nova is: “Understanding is not synonymous with enjoying.

    Current 2020 Sylvaner in General

100% Sylvaner VINTAGE Since 1971; current 2020 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Sylvaner in general: Originally from Germany (where it is known as Silvaner), it became famous in early 20th century when it was Germany’s most planted varietal, before the discovery of the early ripening and higher production attributes of Műller Thurgau. Wine from this grape has a naturally high acid level, but no real longevity. It’s still popular in Nahe, Franken and Rheinpfalz where Riesling struggles to ripen - Sylvaner ripens 2 weeks earlier than Riesling. Excellent late harvest style wines are made in these regions. Sylvaner is also grown in other European countries such as France (Alsace), Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Russia. Sylvaner at Overgaauw: David Snr planted the first Sylvaner at Overgaauw in the 1960s (currently 1 ha). It was bottled in 1971 when most of the local producers were bottling Steen (Chenin Blanc) and Riesling (Cruchen Blanc). The Overgaauw Sylvaner is the only Sylvaner produced in SA. It’s made in small quantities and has a loyal following due to its flavour spectrum and uniqueness. German tourists enjoy tasting ‘their’ varietal in SA and comment that you can “taste the sunshine in the wine”. Restaurants often list it as a unique varietal on their wine lists and are pleasantly surprised at its versatility as a food wine. VITICULTURE Vineyard location: Stellenbosch Kloof, 200m above sea level, south facing, 15km from False Bay Moderate climate: Winter ave temp: 13ºC (min 7ºC, max 17ºC) Summer ave temp: 21.5ºC (min 20.5ºC, max 30.5ºC) Soil: Deep Hutton and Clovelly (decomposed granite) Age of vines: 27 years Trellising: 4-wire hedge system with moveable wires Pruning: Cordon system with 2 bud spurs, ensuring low yield Harvest date: February 2020 Yield per hectare: 8 tons Sugar at harvesting: 23ºB VINICULTURE Length of fermentation: 21 days in stainless steel at average 14ºC Alcohol: 12.5% vol Total acid: 5.1 g/l pH: 3.56 RS: 2.3 g/l OUR WINEMAKER DAVID VAN VELDEN’S COMMENTS First produced in 1971, our Sylvaner is still unique in South Africa.

These wines are complex and interesting much like our food and greatly complement our menu. These wines are alive, have character and evolve very quickly over time in the glass. They are meant to be enjoyed with food, with us here at Alter.
