The History of Rock Music: 1989-1994
The History of Rock Music: 1989-1994 Raves, grunge, post-rock History of Rock Music | 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-75 | 1976-89 | The early 1990s | The late 1990s | The 2000s | Alpha index Musicians of 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-76 | 1977-89 | 1990s in the US | 1990s outside the US | 2000s Back to the main Music page (Copyright © 2009 Piero Scaruffi) Noisier than Rock (These are excerpts from my book "A History of Rock and Dance Music") New York's legacy 1990-94 TM, ®, Copyright © 2005 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. The 1980s had witnessed a more or less subliminal process of deconstruction of rock music: angular melodies, irregular rhythms, strident counterpoint. The instruments and the line-up were consistent with the stereotype of rock'n'roll but the result was almost antithetical: brainy, un-hummable, depressing and mostly instrumental. During the 1990s this form of intellectual rock was recognized as a major vehicle for the message of a musician, the same way that a memorable melody had been the main vehicle for most musicians of the 1960s. The influence of Sonic Youth was perhaps the most visible. Mostly unknown during the 1980s, Sonic Youth came slowly to represent "the" quintessential alternative band. An even more "alternative" act, Pussy Galore, was a close second. No surprise, then, that a few of the new leaders emerged from those two bands. Bewitched (1) were formed by Pussy Galore's drummer Bob Bert, and recorded a boldly experimental work, Brain Eraser (? 1990 - jul 1990). Jon Spencer's wife Cristina Martinez led Boss Hog (1), that re-invented party-music first on Cold Hands (? 1990 - nov 1990), featuring Honeymoon Killers' bassist Jerry Teel and Unsane drummer Charlie Ondras, and then on Whiteout (? 1999 - aug 1999), both clever revisitations of rock stereotypes. -
The Future of Music: Exploring Noise and Pop with Cienfuegos

Contact: [email protected] “The Hills,” by The Weeknd, is an ode to being so famous and on so many drugs that you don’t care who you’re fucking. The Toronto rapper topped the Billboard 100 with the track, and amassed 370 million hits on YouTube. His millennial take on Michael Jackson is modern pop perfection. Despite its undeniable catchiness, “The Hills” champions over-the-top, blown-out, good-old-fashioned noise. The Weeknd uses noise to introduce the more traditionally melodic moments of the song: four bursts of drawn-out distorted thuds jumpstart the beginning of the track, and a high-pitched scream, cringe-worthy on its own but appropriate when buried in its surrounding soundscape, precedes the hook of the chorus. Noise tops the charts now. The slick guitar licks of Maroon 5 and belting blonde divas like Boyoncé still populate playlists, but atypically abrasive sounds now lurk in their sonic shadows. Bursts of harsh sound, walls of distortion, and the clatter of grinding gears are seeping into the most unthought-of places, often churned into so many other sounds that many ears will miss it. -
Between Noise-Rock and Post-Rock
The History of Rock Music - The Eighties The History of Rock Music: 1976-1989 New Wave, Punk-rock, Hardcore History of Rock Music | 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-75 | 1976-89 | The early 1990s | The late 1990s | The 2000s | Alpha index Musicians of 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-76 | 1977-89 | 1990s in the US | 1990s outside the US | 2000s Back to the main Music page (Copyright © 2009 Piero Scaruffi) Between Noise-rock and Post-rock (These are excerpts from my book "A History of Rock and Dance Music") New York's noise-rock 1986-88 Sonic Youth coined a style that came to be called "noise-rock". It was still abiding by the rules of rock and roll but it was hijacked by dissonant or discordant sounds. Notable purveyors of noise-rock in the second half of the decade were Nice Strong Arm; Rat At Rat R, whose Rock & Roll Is Dead (dec 1984/feb 1985 - ? 1985) was prophetic; Agitpop (1), whose Back At The Plain Of Jars (? 1985 - ? 1986) was reminiscent of Half Japanese and Pianosaurus; Ritual Tension (1), whose I Live Here (? 1985 - ? 1986) was devoted to clownish non-linear Pere Ubu-esque "dances"; Gut Bank (1), who recorded an album of amateurish but highly creative noise-rock, Dark Ages (? 1986 - end 1986), and pioneered the "riot- grrrrls" movement. Robert Poss (a student of avantgarde composers Alvin Lucier, Phil Niblock and Rhys Chatham) led the triple-guitar attack of the Band Of Susans (13). The guitar tornadoes on the EP Blessing And Curse (aug 1986 - ??) and on the full-length Hope Against Hope (may/jun 1987 - ? 1988) gave rock'n'roll a new twist, fusing minimalistic repetition, psychedelic vocals and guitar noise. -
