  • Recent Critical Praise for My Brightest Diamond's This Is My Hand
Recent critical praise for My Brightest Diamond’s This Is My Hand Favorite Songs of 2014 “‘Pressure’: This baroque pop gem opens with drum corps and woodwinds, tacks on a tribal rhythm breakdown and just goes for it. All the way.” “…one of the most powerful and dramatic voices of the past decade.” “…an ability to cultivate intimacy through flawless, complex production with a beating heart.” “As a musician, Worden (who performs as My Brightest Diamond) builds her songs deliberately and impeccably…words are painted, sounds are sculpted, and the nature of Worden’s voice itself adds dimension—more than a single vocalist usually can. Her wholly enveloping, finely tuned alto sounds by turns forceful, vulnerable, cooing, playful, and endlessly emotive.” “…has a feeling for both the grandeur and the grain, building every sweeping gesture in her music out of a swarm of small details.” The Best of 2014 “…added to her smart, savvy chamber pop the influence of funk and marching bands. Her flawless voice pecks, jabs and floats above a world of rhythm that gives the new music its motion and undeniable heartbeat.” “At times, This Is My Hand all but commands listeners to dance.” “On her new album, This Is My Hand, she continues to reach far and wide with great success, adding marching-band rhythms and funky horns to her mix.” “…sounds like a modern-day Nina Simone…” “…This is My Hand works on a visceral level, conjuring Worden’s intended image of tribal, fireside collaboration through a rich diversity of texture, detail, and tone.” “…successful exercise in percussive, jagged art-pop that explores themes of self-acceptance, sensuality, and community.” “...unique and oddly beautiful.” “…presents an invigorating progression of Worden’s sonic palette…” #3: MBE Producer Ariana Morgenstern’s Top Albums of 2014 “…gorgeous new album…” “This Is My Hand is an album I would recommend to anyone—for exactly all the reasons that it’s hard to write about.

  • Album Review of the Velvet Underground & Nico
Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico – Artifacts Journal - University of Mi... Page 1 of 4 University of Missouri A Journal of Undergraduate Writing Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico Sam Jennings Sam Jennings started attending the University of Missouri in 2012 and is currently pursuing a bachelor of music performance in guitar. He writes in his spare time and fronts a local Columbia rock band, “The Rollups”. He is thankful to Dr. Michael J. Budds for encouraging him and his submission to this journal. He wrote this paper as one part of a multi-paper project in Historical Studies in Jazz and Popular Music, taught by Dr. Michael J. Budds. They were expected to choose a musician (before 1970) and review a full-length LP by that artist; he felt particularly inclined to make the case for a set of truly bizarre, radical artists who have been historically misunderstood and misaligned. When The Velvet Underground & Nico was released in March of 1967, it was to a public that hardly cared and a critical establishment that could not make heads or tails of it. Its sales were dismal, due in part to legal troubles, and MGM’s bungled attempts at promoting the record. The Velvet Underground’s seedy, druggy music defiantly reflected an urban attitude even closer to the beatniks than Bob Dylan and even more devoted to rock n’ roll primitivism than The Rolling Stones or The Who. Nevertheless, the recording had no place in a landscape soon to be dominated by San Francisco psychedelics and high- concept British pop.

  • High Concept Music for Low Concept Minds
High concept music for low concept minds Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world: August/September New albums reviewed Part 1 Music doesn’t challenge anymore! It doesn’t ask questions, or stimulate. Institutions like the X-Factor, Spotify, EDM and landfill pop chameleons are dominating an important area of culture by churning out identikit pop clones with nothing of substance to say. Opinion is not only frowned upon, it is taboo! By JOHN BITTLES This is why we need musicians like The Black Dog, people who make angry, bitter compositions, highlighting inequality and how fucked we really are. Their new album Neither/Neither is a sonically dense and thrilling listen, capturing the brutal erosion of individuality in an increasingly technological and state-controlled world. In doing so they have somehow created one of the most mesmerising and important albums of the year. Music isn’t just about challenging the system though. Great music comes in a wide variety of formats. Something proven all too well in the rest of the albums reviewed this month. For instance, we also have the experimental pop of Georgia, the hazy chill-out of Nils Frahm, the Vangelis-style urban futurism of Auscultation, the dense electronica of Mueller Roedelius, the deep house grooves of Seb Wildblood and lots, lots more. Somehow though, it seems only fitting to start with the chilling reflection on the modern day systems of state control that is the latest work by UK electronic veterans The Black Dog. Their new album has, seemingly, been created in an attempt to give the dispossessed and repressed the knowledge of who and what the enemy is so they may arm themselves and fight back.

  • Introduction from Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man
Introduction From Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man This monograph explores a long- standing tradition of merging pop- ular music idioms with lush string orchestrations, big- band instrumentation, traditional symphonic instruments, and other markers of musical sophistica- tion, glamour, spectacle, theatricality, and epic or “cinematic” qualities. I call such deluxe—or “luxe”—pop arrangements and performance events “con- spicuous symphonization.” This phrasing underscores entertainment par- allels to Thorstein Veblen’s notion of “conspicuous consumption,” wherein luxury goods and services are employed for displays of social status, wealth, or cultural sophistication. A colloquialism with a similar social meaning is “bling,” a hip- hop slang term referring to displays of an ostentatious life- style of lavish and excessive spending. Conspicuous consumption and bling display are both tied to the purpose of inspiring envy. However, with bling, there is an aversion to melting- pot uniformity in that bling displays involve ironic stylistic tensions through juxtapositions of “low” vernacular/pop cul- ture and the high- status symbols of social power, whether real or perceived. Similar qualities permeate the US “luxe pop” repertories and events explored in this book. This music further reflects important changes in the character and aesthetic discourses of American culture and entertainment. Across the twentieth century, the United States experienced unprece- dented economic prosperity, resulting in middle- class expansion, particularly following
