Introduction from Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man
Introduction From Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man This monograph explores a long- standing tradition of merging pop- ular music idioms with lush string orchestrations, big- band instrumentation, traditional symphonic instruments, and other markers of musical sophistica- tion, glamour, spectacle, theatricality, and epic or “cinematic” qualities. I call such deluxe—or “luxe”—pop arrangements and performance events “con- spicuous symphonization.” This phrasing underscores entertainment par- allels to Thorstein Veblen’s notion of “conspicuous consumption,” wherein luxury goods and services are employed for displays of social status, wealth, or cultural sophistication. A colloquialism with a similar social meaning is “bling,” a hip- hop slang term referring to displays of an ostentatious life- style of lavish and excessive spending. Conspicuous consumption and bling display are both tied to the purpose of inspiring envy. However, with bling, there is an aversion to melting- pot uniformity in that bling displays involve ironic stylistic tensions through juxtapositions of “low” vernacular/pop cul- ture and the high- status symbols of social power, whether real or perceived. Similar qualities permeate the US “luxe pop” repertories and events explored in this book. This music further reflects important changes in the character and aesthetic discourses of American culture and entertainment. Across the twentieth century, the United States experienced unprece- dented economic prosperity, resulting in middle- class expansion, particularly following -

It has been an immense privilege to study under David and his thoughtful, open, and rigorous approach has fundamentally shaped the way I think about history. I would also like to Judith Coffin, who has been patiently mentored me since I was a hapless undergraduate. Judy’s ideas and suggestions have constantly opened up new ways of thinking for me and her elegance as a writer will be something to which I will always aspire. I would like to express my appreciation to Karl Hagstrom Miller, who has poignantly altered the way I listen to and encounter music since the first time he shared the recordings of Ellington’s Blanton-Webster band with me when I was 20 years old. -
Hey Marseilles – Lines We Trace What the Press Has Been Saying, So Far
Hey Marseilles – Lines We Trace What the press has been saying, so far... “Charm and sincerity are the outstanding traits of the Seattle six-piece Hey Marseilles, who fuse traditional pop and classical instrumentation to make what they call ‘folkestra.’” – The New Yorker “The melodies and arrangements are flowing and dynamic without as much as a wasted note, nods to Chopin and Mozart discernable but not overbearing.” - American Songwriter “Lead vocalist Matt Bishop delivers their music with effortless tonality; lyrics seem to float over the sound of instruments, resulting in an aching, lingering tenderness.” – Interview Magazine "Seattle-based Hey Marseilles blends horns, strings, guitars and vocals with electronic instruments to make rich, ethereal music that defies category." - Mix Magazine “....Hey Marseilles is a contender if you’re looking for a local rock band to break out in a significant way in 2013.” – Seattle Times "Their songs build off the fashionably warm and immediate sound of chamber pop, replete with heart-tugging lyrics and a well-informed indie rock attitude. With a formula as wholesome as this, Hey Marseilles are nothing short of captivating." - Aquarian Weekly "The Decemberists-shaped hole in our collective heart is about to be filled, kind of, by Hey Marseilles' second LP, ‘Lines We Trace’." – Portland Mercury "Piano, horns, guitars, and electronic instruments create richness and complexity in this music, which is somehow earthy and ethereal at once." - Electronic Musician “It’s hard enough to set yourself apart during -

LIEDCENTER.ORG | 402.472.4747 1 Dear Friends, We are honored to share with you the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ 30th Anniversary Season. For the past three decades, the greatest artists in the world in every genre have graced our stage. It is thanks to your support and attendance that the Lied continues to grow every year and is one of the top 100 performing arts centers in the world. Our world-class lineup of performances for 2019-2020 will provide experiences you will celebrate forever. This is by far the biggest season we’ve ever presented in Lied history, including the first two-week run of a major Broadway musical – The Phantom of the Opera, as well as five award-winning Broadway musicals (White Christmas, Waitress, Beautiful, An American in Paris and Bandstand). We are presenting the world’s best performers in music, comedy, theater and dance throughout the season, and providing transformative experiences for Nebraskans across the state. We continue to showcase the nation’s leading classical music this season by presenting the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the debut of its new Music Director Stéphane Denève, joined by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and later this season, the legendary Boston Pops with Conductor Keith Lockhart celebrating the music of John Williams. Legendary pianist Murray Perahia headlines our amazing piano series this year, and our dance lineup is exemplary, including Bill T. Jones, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s dazzling new production of The Wizard of Oz. The diverse array of programs and legendary status of many of the artists truly creates a historic season for our state. -

BIO // THE DEARS // GANG OF LOSERS // JULY 2006 Available in the U.S. October 3, on Arts & Crafts. Without even seeing a performance by The Dears it was easy to recognize the group in Montreal’s haunts in the late nineties. Dressed in black suits and white shirts, they would descend on bars like the minor legends they were. At that time, The Dears were like an unconfirmed rumour of ardour; they were full of possibility, and propelled by passion, alienation, and alcohol. Their precious name and crooning vocals of charismatic frontman Murray Lightburn, defined their clean, symphonic pop style. Yet the band’s onstage intensity and quiet defiance defied easy categorization. Already, at that early stage, their sophisticated content and attitude set them at odds with the music scene of the day. End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, their 2000 debut album, immediately established The Dears as a unique and powerful presence. With a stylized and cinematic scope, the record fused narratives, orchestral arrangements and pop in a way that was praised for ambitious grandiosity. The Dears, now Lightburn with keyboardist Natalia Yanchak and joined by drummer George Donoso III and bassist Martin Pelland, exhausted themselves on a seemingly endless schedule of grueling tours. Kids from Sudbury to Vancouver bought tickets and T-shirts and came out from winter’s shadow to experience the band live. They toured more. Band members quit and replacements were found. They endured their initiation into the divided and limited realities of national critical success and kept to themselves. By 2001 The Dears ceased to be a rumour; they were real and dark – almost too real and too dark for a Canadian music scene that banked on fluffy love songs and slick indie hits. -
Carl Sigman Songs
CARL SIGMAN SONGS NO PRINTING GLUE SURFACE THE EXPLANATION IS THE SONG ITSELF Reflections On Carl Sigman By DAVID McGEE WHEN CARL SIGMAN PASSED AWAY IN HIS MANHASSET, New York, home on September 28, 2000, the most eloquent and appropriate tributes to the great American pop songwriter were not the splendid obituaries in The New York Times and The Los An- geles Times, but rather the snippets of his enduring songs — “Ebb Tide,” “What Now My Love,” “It’s All In The Game,” “Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo),” “(Where Do I Begin) Love Story,” “Losing You,” “Pennsylvania 6- 5000” — that were played on radio stations around the country to ac- company the announcement of his death at the age of 91. The printed obits — well-written, factually accurate, and unabashed in the writers’ fondness for Sigman’s art — were no doubt many readers’ introduction to the man himself, for Carl Sigman was a craftsman and an artist of the first rank, but he was not in any way a public figure. As was his wont. So when his lyrics filled the airwaves again on the day of his departure from this mortal coil, Carl Sigman was going out as he would have wanted, with his music telling the story of his deepest joys, fears, yearnings and pleasures, as well as illuminating his whimsical, feisty sense of humor, vivid imagination, and generally optimistic worldview. ☛ If people throughout the United States and over- seas (many of Carl’s songs were not only domestic hits but huge successes internationally as well) were “AFTER PLAYING SOFTBALL hearing these lyrics and saying, “So that’s who wrote that song!”, then Carl Sigman was a happy man. -
