On the occasion of marking the International Girls in ICT (Information Communication Technologies) Day, the Association of Business Women in Serbia, with our support, organised a competition Catch an Idea in the Digital World. The project target is to empower girls when selecting their future professions, as well as encourage them to be led by personal interests and talents when considering professional orientation.

Finalists of this competition visited Telenor, talked to lady managers in leading positions in our company and, within the workshop, practiced to present their ideas as successfully as possible.  Improving Digital Literacy with ICT in Primary Schools in Serbia

Within the project Improving Digital Literacy with ICT in Primary Schools in Serbia, which we started in 2017, ten primary schools in Serbia were equipped with Coprix interactive dictionaries, applications for learning mathematics and English language, interactive boards and tablets.

Through interactive instruction, teachers were able to use adequate and modern teaching programme, with useful and creative ideas, which keep children’s attention during classes. The report on the students’ work, within the application, additionally makes the work easier and gives them a possibility to dedicate themselves to their students to the full. Thanks to this project, local communities got acquainted with the benefits of digital instruction, which in our country additionally contributes to the promotion of digital literacy from first school days.

In the past school year interactive instruction reached 280 primary schools and included over 16,000 first graders. This project is implemented by the Civil Association Jerina’s Town (Jerinin grad) with the support of Telenor Foundation.

 Peer Education Against Digital Bullying At the closing conference in Velika Plana, results of the project Peer Education against Digital Bullying were presented. It was implemented by the Civil Association “The World of Words” (Svet reči), with the support of Telenor Foundation.

During six months, in ten communities in Serbia 14 teachers and 36 peer educators were trained, who organised 120 workshops in their schools. Altogether 3,250 teenagers, from 12 to 19 years of age, learned how to behave safely and responsibly on the Internet.

The extent to which primary and secondary school students have truly heard, learned and conveyed further the gained knowledge was testified to by short films that were sent within the competition organised after the educational workshops were finished. The works sent a clear message: there is no place for bullying either in real; or digital world.

 Support to the initiative of Digital Serbia #TrkaZaPetlju

Gathered around one goal, over 500 participants in the Belgrade marathon run under the flag Digital Serbia Initiative. The idea of this drive was to jointly express public support and raise funds for the further development of free portal petlja.org, which gives the primary school students in Serbia a chance to make their first steps in programming. Employees of seven companies rallied around Digital Serbia Initiative, a non-profit organisation that advocates transformation of Serbia into a digital society, and joined the drive #TrkaZaPetlju. 4.2. Project activities and achieve results – social inclusion of socially vulnerable groups

 A step toward accessible Belgrade

According to unofficial assessment there are some 700,000 persons with disabilities in our country, while there are no official data. The availability of infrastructure, facilities and location is exceptionally important for persons with disabilities so that they can equally participate in all spheres of life and have a possibility of moving around without problem.

Centre for the Promotion of Society, with the support of Telenor Foundation, within the project ”Step by Step towards Accessible Belgrade”, developed internet portal and Android application dostupnibeograd.rs. It is an easy-to-survey information base on the accessibility of facilities to disabled persons, whereby their movement and daily getting around will be made easier.

The application and site enable the users to take active part in creating a more accessible city. After registration, users can rate locations or facilities, leave their comments or even enter a building and basic information on its accessibility into the base.

 Phone Assistants

Numbers of the National organisation of the Disabled Persons of Serbia tell us that there are 12,000 persons with physical disabilities registered in Serbia, while the Association of Deaf and Persons with Impaired Hearing numbers 130,000 members.

How much are modern technologies truly available to them and how much are they included in the process of the digitalisation of society?

Through the activities of Telenor Foundation we are working on sustainable, innovative digital solutions that provide equal opportunities for all. Within the project Phone Assistants we have supported the development of Android application DeafTalk and DaktiloFon, which will provide the disabled with greater accessibility to mobile devices and mobile communications.

The application DaktiloFon continually recognises speech and translates it into a text, and then saves it as a text document. In this way people, who find it hard to type messages, can dictate them to their phone and the application turns these into a written format which, as a document, can be shared with another person through available applications such as Viber, Messenger, e-mail. The whole conversation is shown on the device screen as a chat, whereby the communication is greatly facilitated for persons who don’t know the sign language.

The aim of this drive was to create adaptable solutions, since special technologies are increasingly accessible, which reduces the digital gap and creates equal opportunities for development and progress.

 Digital instruction for children from vulnerable groups

Digital technologies are important in raising the level of education. This particularly relates to the environments in which there is a large number of school dropouts from primary schools. According to the data of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Development, this most frequently relates to children of Roma nationality.

That’s why we have launched a project that will increase the number of Roma children that will complete primary school. This time we have provided interactive teaching aids, as help and additional support to children in mastering the beginner reading and writing on the territory of Aleksinac Municipality, in cooperation with “Hope” (Nada), Association of the Roma Women.

 Support to “Fair Play“ Basket Tournament

Last weekend on the grounds of Dynamic Sport & Health Club in Dorćol, UNCEF “Fair Play” humanitarian tournament in basketball was held with the aim to raise funds for strengthening capacities of neonatal centre, so as to provide optimal conditions for the development of prematurely born and sick babies to survive and advance. Over 800,000 dinars were collected from the teams’ participation fees as support to intensive care ward at Neonatology and Delivery Departments of the Gyneocology Clinic “Narodni Front”. For a second year in a row, Telenor had its trophy team, which passed a trial of strength against fifteen other companies, which also supported the drive.

4.3. Project activities and achieve results – Environmental Protection

 Smart solar benches in Velika Plana

Two smart solar benches in Velika Plana were placed in April at the central town locations. In cooperation with the Municipality Velika Plana, Telenor Foundation provided the benches, with the aim of enabling citizens to recharge smart devices with the help of solar energy, as well as have Telenor internet.

Strategically, through different projects, Municipality Velika Plana is reducing its expenditures for energy sources wishing to encourage institutions and citizens to use alternative sources of energy, such as solar energy, wind, biomass energy. With the help of this project, citizens saw for themselves that the solar energy is available and free, so that investments in renewable energy sources are useful and profitable.

Smart solar benches, produced by EnGo Planet, have solar energy available 24 hours, irrespective of the weather conditions, with a solar panel which delivers up to 120 Watts of electrical energy per hour. The bench has four USB ports to which different devices, additional wireless rechargers, LED lightings, as well as built-in systems for control and safety, can be easily connected.
