“Peace Walls & Murals Around the World” (Quote and colored text below is shown as found on this website) http://peace.maripo.com/p_walls.htm “1968 - "Peace" or "Metafisica," Halsted Urban Progress Center, Halsted Street & Cullerton, Pilsen neighborhood, Chicago, Illinois (USA). Mural by Mario Castillo. "Possibly the first outdoor Chicano mural in the USA." "The first anti Viet Nam war mural. When Castillo painted this, he was not aware of Bill Walker's 'Wall of Respect' which was painted in 1967." No longer exists. Nor does Castillo's 1969 mural "The Wall of Brotherhood." /// From Castillo: "I was the first Mexican-American in the USA. to start painting murals for the new public art movement in 1968, I’m in history books related to this movement... At Lane Technical High School in Chicago, I was surrounded by major fresco works & WPA murals. At the time I was also aware of the pre-Columbian frescos of the Maya & Teotihuacanos & the three major Mexican muralists, Los Tres Grandes Rivera, Orozco & Siqueiros. It was not until 1968 when I painted the first Chicano & first anti Viet Nam war mural, 'Peace' or Metafisica, as it came to be known at the Halsted Urban Progress Center, that I painted a mural outdoors. When I painted this, I was not aware of Bill Walker’s Wall of Respect, which he painted in 1967. I simply was basing my stimulus on what I had done in 1964 at Lane Tech & also my Mexican Heritage. Then in 1969 I painted The Wall of Brotherhood at 18th Street and Halsted Street also in Pilsen. This second mural which was about two blocks away from “Peace” was painted by a group of students from different ethnic backgrounds. Because of this & its theme, The Wall of Brotherhood became the first multicultural mural of the new movement. Both of these murals paid homage to pre-Colombian cultures...”

Closing Commentaries______

Destiny took Castillo to SAIC and Cal Arts to uncover truths concerning art and its status quo dictums about what is acceptable as high art. This gave him a new perspective on his work and enlightened a path that he had been close to since his first Latino murals in Chicago in the mid 60’s. Using the established idioms of art, he chose to work with his identity as it applies to being a human being on this planet and also as it applies to his cultural heritage.

When the Chicago Historical Society offered Castillo a commission for a mural to represent the Mexican culture in Chicago, he could not have been more ready. He wanted to showcase the mystical marvels of the ancient Mexican civilizations. Thus, the “Mayahuel” mural came about. This work deals with a theme of universal appeal while at the same time Castillo wanted to do a work that would create awe in the eyes of school children visiting the museum (hence the “glowing skulls).

On the 4th of July 2001, Castillo wrote a manifesto of liberation from his signature style and opening the space for him to do work in any style and medium of his choosing. In the 1960’s Public Art Movement in Chicago he was a pioneer of this new mural renaissance. Because of this, his 2006 Mayahuel mural validates his interest on doing art for the general public. The people below are not art critics, but they have been able to express their feelings about how this mural affected them.

Castillo is well aware that the Mayahuel mural is not considered “High Art” by most people in the cultural mainstream. In spite of this, the link below demonstrates how one viewer was attracted to what is considered one of Castillo’s major works.

In “My So-Called Life as an Academic” (link above), Alex Terrana writes about the Mayahuel mural. This is an excerpt:

“Whenever I go to the NMMA, I have to visit my favorite painting. It is in the resident collection, and is a large piece that takes up one of the entire walls in the entrance corridor of the exhibit. I have sat in front of this painting for hours, on numerous occasions. On this day, I was only visiting, but being that I randomly think about this painting often in life, I thought it relevant to highlight even though it was not the purpose for my trip to the museum. ………… Whether you know anything about art, or anything about Mexican history is irrelevant when it comes to this painting. It is powerful and peaceful; vibrant and soothing; thoughtful and aggressive. I love it! “
