Mexican American History Resources at the Briscoe Center for American History: A Bibliography The Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin offers a wide variety of material for the study of Mexican American life, history, and culture in Texas. As with all ethnic groups, the study of Mexican Americans in Texas can be approached from many perspectives through the use of books, photographs, music, dissertations and theses, newspapers, the personal papers of individuals, and business and governmental records. This bibliography will familiarize researchers with many of the resources relating to Mexican Americans in Texas available at the Center for American History. Lecture One 19TH CENTURY ANTECEDENTS TO 20TH CENTURY PENTECOSTALISM INTRODUCTION Today we are here to talk about the face of global Christianity. According to a Pew Charitable Trust study released in 2011, based on data gathered the previous year, it was estimated that the global Christian population stood at 2.18 billion people of an estimated world population of 6.9 billion. These numbers were further divided into a split of just over 50% identified as Roman Catholic, with 36.7% claiming to be Protestants, another 11.9% listed as Orthodox, leaving 1.3% to be described as “other Christians,” including Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. The purpose of our deliberations today is not to quibble over what is and is not a Christian. We accept that the only proper definition of a “Christian,” is one who has accepted by faith the Gospel of Jesus Christ and is striving to walk in a manner commensurate with the Word of God. Nevertheless, there are many in the world today that consider themselves Christians by one definition or another and the Pew study factors in the broadest range of those individuals for the purpose of analyzing the global phenomena known as Christianity.1 According to Pew’s figures, in the past 100 years the global Christian population has increased from 600 million in 1910 out of a possible world population estimated at 1.8 billion to the current levels. -

Taylor, Technical Services Librarian Library Bibliography Series ©Spring 2002 1 PREFACE Since 1998, Dr. Jon Michael Spencer has donated more than 1,100 books from his personal research library as well as selected journals, microfilm of historic papers and research documentation to the L. Douglas Wilder Library at Virginia Union University. The subject areas reflect his specialties in the history and theology of African-American sacred and secular music, African history and slave culture, and African-American history and sociology. The collection includes a significant number of hymnals from various denominations. The former University of Richmond music and American studies professor is now a professor of religious studies at the University of South Carolina. He earned a music degree from Hampton University and completed graduate work in music composition as well as theology at Washington University and Duke Divinity School. Spencer donated this extensive collection to VUU for several reasons. Until the summer 2000, he was a resident of Richmond and VUU was the city’s African American university. As well, VUU has a School of Theology and Spencer has published extensively in the area of religion. Finally, his architect father, John H. Spencer, participated in the design of the Wilder library. It is in the elder Spencer’s name that Dr. Spencer has donated his collections. The books are housed in the library’s closed collections. -

1 Creating Sustainable Foundations for Rhizomes of Mexican American Art Since 1848 Karen Mary Davalos (UMN) and Constance Cortez (UTRGV) Introduction With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (1848), some 80,000 residents living in the former Mexican territories became United States citizens. Over the subsequent 173 years, Mexican American artists created a rich array of artistic forms that include murals, wooden sculptures, cut-paper art, installations and new media. Given the geopolitical context within which the artists work, Mexican American art aligns with categories, genres, styles, and practices outlined by canonic American art history. Nevertheless, this affinity is not without paradox. While uncompromisingly voicing American identity, Mexican American art and artists simultaneously continue to lay claim to influences from Spain, Mexico, and the indigenous populations of North America. Additionally, Mexican American art encompasses the pre- modern, modern, and postmodern eras and engages in a visual and ideological play of cultures. For instance, the santeros (sculptors and painters of religious art) of New Mexico employ the style and techniques of the Spanish colonial period in their renderings of saints while appropriating imagery relevant to the present. In this simultaneous recognition of past and present, Mexican American artists both critique and expand traditional definitions of American art and, by extension, what it means to be “American.” It is unfortunate that this innovative use of combined traditions has frequently been met with misunderstanding that, in turn, has led to invisibility.
