ARLT 100g “Cultural Encounters in the Age of Exploration” Professor Daniela Bleichmar Fall 2007 E-mail: [email protected] M/W 12-1.30pm Office Hours: Wednesdays 10am-noon, or by appointment THH 108 Office: VKC 368 Course Description This course will examine selected episodes in the history of cultural encounters in the Americas, focusing on the first long century of contact between Europeans and Americans. In this first age of truly global interactions, peoples and cultures encountered one another in multiple contexts: exploration, trade, war, colonial occupation, religion, art. These encounters forced those who participated in them to examine some of their most basic ideas and beliefs: what a human being is, how a culture functions, what is acceptable and unacceptable in a society, and—perhaps most important— how to respond to similarity and difference, notions of self and otherness. We will examine the ways in which a wide range of texts, images, and objects produced during the period participated in and reflected upon experiences of encounter, exchange, interpretation, and representation among different and often distant cultures. We will also examine the ways in which a selection of contemporary films has represented early modern encounters. Course Objectives In terms of subject matter, students will gain familiarity with the history of early modern cultural encounters by working with both primary and secondary sources. In terms of skills useful in college and beyond, the main objective of this course is to develop students’ critical, analytical, and interpretive skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. Students will work on their capacity to identify key issues and ask probing questions; to argue persuasively and eloquently in both written and oral contexts; and to write thoughtful, focused analysis that is convincing and thought-provoking. -

Alongside this idea comes the widespread narrative that describes a barbaric, uncivilized group of indigenous people being conquered and subjugated by a more sophisticated and superior group of Europeans. -

Radding Miguel La Serna Jocelyn Olcott © 2018 Angélica Castillo Reyna ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Angélica Castillo Reyna: Charrería, Nationalism, and Manly Relevance in Modern Mexico (Under the direction of John C. Chasteen) This dissertation offers two premises. First, there is a deep history of relationships between power, horsemanship, and constructions of masculinity in modern Mexico. Second, because of this history, Mexicans in various eras and situations have depended on rural equestrian costumes, identities, and traditions to influence, interpret, and navigate the world around them. Part 1 of this dissertation consists of three chapters and provides an overview of the development of Mexican equestrian customs and the ways that Mexicans in colonial, independent, and revolutionary Mexico used horsemanship to make their lives meaningful, central, and sustainable. Part II, composed of five chapters, shifts to a discussion of the emergence of the equestrian sport community of organized charrería and the way that organized charros continued the practice of transforming Mexico’s equestrian past into a form of strategic cultural capital. Post-revolutionary organized charros, cognizant of the rich equestrian history they had to draw upon, used the idea of Mexican horsemen’s historic contributions in order to claim relevance in post-revolutionary Mexico as the heirs and latest representatives of that historically-significant equestrian tradition. -

All Photos: Liz Ligon NEW YORK, NY, October 19, 2018 — On Thursday, October 18, The Studio Museum in Harlem welcomed over 800 artists, cultural leaders, civic leaders, business leaders, and philanthropists to its annual Gala, which this year inaugurated the Museum’s historic 50th anniversary celebration. Co-chaired by Studio Museum Trustees Jacqueline L. Bradley, Kathryn C. Chenault, Carol Sutton Lewis, and Dr. Amelia Ogunlesi, the event at the Park Avenue Armory featured remarks by Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator, and Raymond J. McGuire, Chairman of the Board. First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray presented the Studio Museum with a Mayoral Proclamation to commemorate the Museum’s historic fifty year legacy. Studio Museum TrusteesHolly Peterson and Ann G. Tenenbaum served as the event’s Founders’ Circle Co-Chairs. The formal program also included the presentation of the thirteenth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize to the Los Angeles-based artist Diedrick Brackens, confirming the meteoric rise of a boundary-defying young artist who has emerged within only the past seven years. The Prize was once again supported by George Wein. Among the notable guests were Sir David Adjaye OBE, architect of the new home of The Studio Museum in Harlem; former Studio Museum Directors, Kinshasha Holman Conwill, current Deputy Director of the National Museum of African American Art and Culture and Edward S. -

The Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca was carefully constructed during his lifetime to be his lasting legacy in New Spain. The goal of this dissertation is to reexamine published primary sources in light of this new argument and integrate unknown archival material to trace the development of a lasting legacy by Cortés and his direct heirs in Spanish colonial Mexico. Part one looks at Cortés’s life after the conquest of Mexico, giving particular attention to the themes of fame and honor and how these ideas guided his actions. The importance of land and property in and after the conquest is also highlighted. Part two is an examination of the marquisate, discussing the key features of the various landholdings and also their importance to the legacy Cortés sought to construct.
