1 a Slightly Slummier Area? Negotiations of Place-Bound
A slightly slummier area? Negotiations of place-bound identities through social spatialisations and unofficial toponyms1 Jani Vuolteenaho, Hanna Lappalainen & Terhi Ainiala University of Helsinki ABSTRACT: In the article, spatialisations (discourses of ideal or stereotyped spaces) are conceptualised as powerful discourses of the surrounding society, providing resources for place-bound identity construction in interaction. We combine a sociolinguistic analysis with Bakhtinian dialogism to understand how such ‘third’ voices in dialogue empower and pluralise self- and other- positionings embedded in the evocations of unofficial place names. Empirically, the focus is on toponyms that divide the socially mixed Vuosaari suburb in Helsinki into ‘older’ and ‘newer’ territories. The results show that when the stereotypes of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ neighbourhoods or other spatialisations interpenetrate the uses of ‘Old’ and ‘New Vuosaari’, they open room for the (re-)voicing of the meanings of these toponyms for highly differentiated social ends. With the Bakhtinian framework bridging between socio-spatial theory and sociolinguistics, the article develops a spatially sensitised approach to analyse the entanglements of the micro-level contexts of interaction with the macro-level discourses of meaning-giving. KEY WORDS: unofficial place names, social spatialisations, self- and other-positioning, place-bound identities 1 ABSTRACT IN FINNISH: Sosiaaliset spatialisaatiot ovat yhteiskunnassa vaikuttavia tilaa koskevia ideologisia diskursseja. Resident Accounts of Mellunmäki
Tiedekunta/Osasto Fakultet/Sektion – Laitos Institution – Department Faculty Department of Social Research Faculty of Social Sciences TekijäFörfattare – Author Mika Hyötyläinen Työn nimi Arbetets titel – Title Resident Accounts of Mellunmäki Territorial Stigma Explored in a Helsinki Lähiö Oppiaine Läroämne – Subject Social policy / Urban studies Työn laji Arbetets art Aika Datum – Month Sivumäärä Sidoantal – Number of pages – Level and year 93 Master’s thesis May 2013 Tiivistelmä Referat – Abstract This thesis studies the negative labeling of a neighborhood or territorial stigmatization in a residential suburb of Helsinki called Mellunmäki. The purpose of this thesis is to find out whether a territorial stigma features in local residents accounts of the area. The theoretical framework for this thesis is drawn from Loic Wacquant’s idea of a territorial stigma. Wacquant proposes that a negative label or a stigma easily becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, when the residents of stigmatized areas begin to look for ways of distancing from their neighbors and begin to blame neighbors for the area’s alleged hardships. Another theoretical tool to better study the topic in the Finnish context is drawn from previous research on media depictions of Finnish residential suburbs or lähiös through recent decades. The data has been collected by semi-structured interviews. The residents of Mellunmäki have been interviewed in depth about their experiences and opinions on Mellunmäki. Only by understanding the experiences on an individual level can we say something concrete about the wider phenomenon of territorial stigma. By comparing the collected data, themes have been constructed of the phenomenon. The analysis of these themes provide findings as follows. -

The Change in Planned Nomenclature in Vuosaari, Helsinki
The change in planned nomenclature in Vuosaari, Helsinki Jani VUOLTEENAHO, Terhi AINIALA and Elina WIHURI 1. Introduction In terms of general visibility and the functioning of cities as spatial systems, the most prominent names in the urban landscape are those belonging to the planned nomenclature. The planned names differ from the traditional ones which have their origin in a spontaneous use of language. Traditionally, people have talked about places important for, e.g., working, living, and traveling by referring to them by names of their own invention. In modern urban environments, however, planned names are utilized for a variety of administrative as well as everyday purposes. At least in the bulk of cases, these names have not been originally coined by local residents. Instead, the norm is that a local authority has created and officially sanctioned the names. This article examines planned nomenclature in the urban envi- ronment. The study on which the article is based is part of a larger research project entitled “The transformation of the sociolinguisti- cally diversifying neighbourhoods of Helsinki” in which the urban onomastic landscape is studied both linguistically and geographi- cally (Ainiala & Vuolteenaho 2006). The full study covers not only official and planned names but also everyday and unofficial names used by city dwellers. The unofficial names are, nevertheless, not discussed in this article. Besides Finnish nomenclature, we consider examples from continental European and Nordic urban settings in the theoretical section of the article. The focus of this article is on town plan names and housing cor- poration names. The town plan names are names that have been planned specifically and authoritatively for a planned area within a town. -
NEW-BUILD GENTRIFICATION in HELSINKI Anna Kajosaari
Master's Thesis Regional Studies Urban Geography NEW-BUILD GENTRIFICATION IN HELSINKI Anna Kajosaari 2015 Supervisor: Michael Gentile UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES AND GEOGRAPHY GEOGRAPHY PL 64 (Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2) 00014 Helsingin yliopisto Faculty Department Faculty of Science Department of Geosciences and Geography Author Anna Kajosaari Title New-build gentrification in Helsinki Subject Regional Studies Level Month and year Number of pages (including appendices) Master's thesis December 2015 126 pages Abstract This master's thesis discusses the applicability of the concept of new-build gentrification in the context of Helsinki. The aim is to offer new ways to structure the framework of socio-economic change in Helsinki through this theoretical perspective and to explore the suitability of the concept of new-build gentrification in a context where the construction of new housing is under strict municipal regulations. The conceptual understanding of gentrification has expanded since the term's coinage, and has been enlarged to encompass a variety of new actors, causalities and both physical and social outcomes. New-build gentrification on its behalf is one of the manifestations of the current, third-wave gentrification. Over the upcoming years Helsinki is expected to face growth varying from moderate to rapid increase of the population. The last decade has been characterized by the planning of extensive residential areas in the immediate vicinity of the Helsinki CBD and the seaside due to the relocation of inner city cargo shipping. Accompanied with characteristics of local housing policy and existing housing stock, these developments form the framework where the prerequisites for the existence of new-build gentrification are discussed. -
URBAN FORM in the HELSINKI and STOCKHOLM CITY REGIONS City Regions from the Perspective of Urban Form and the Traffic System
REPORTS OF THE FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE 16 | 2015 This publication compares the development of the Helsinki and Stockholm AND CAR ZONES TRANSPORT PUBLIC DEVELOPMENT OF PEDESTRIAN, CITY REGIONS AND STOCKHOLM THE HELSINKI URBAN FORM IN city regions from the perspective of urban form and the traffic system. Urban Form in the Helsinki The viewpoint of the study centres on the notion of three urban fabrics – and Stockholm City Regions walking city, transit city and car city – which differ in terms of their physical structure and the travel alternatives they offer. Development of Pedestrian, Public Transport and Car Zones Based on the results of the study, growth in the Stockholm region has been channelled inward more strongly than in Helsinki, which has increased the structural density of Stockholm’s core areas. During recent years, however, Panu Söderström, Harry Schulman and Mika Ristimäki the Helsinki region has followed suit with the direction of migration turning from the peri-urban municipalities towards the city at the centre.
