WOLBI: REVELATION 1-5 Spring SEMESTER 2019 JOHN BARNETT COURSE DETAILS: Our Scope: 10 hours will be spent studying chapters 1-5 the only book in the Bible that has a promise of blessing for those who read it!! Revelation breaks nicely into two sections: the “prophecy” of Revelation 6-22 and the “practice” of Revelation 1-5. Our Purpose: The Book of Revelation God’s final written communication to man. More than just the future and destiny of mankind, this book is the final revelation of the beauty, character, and wonders of our Lord Jesus Christ. For us as believers, the person of Jesus Christ and how to worship Him will dominate our study. Knowing Him should motivate us to personal holiness and evangelism. Our Goals: In exams and assignments, the students are expected: 1. To KNOW the general outline of Revelation. 2. To SEE the key Old Testament quotations used in the book. 3. To UNDERSTAND reasons for the dispensational interpretation of the book. 4. To RECOGNIZE the symbols in the book. 5. To APPLY God's Word to our daily lives. Our Assignments: 1. Read the Book of Revelation once 20 Points 2. Do the Project. A typed 3-part Devotional Method study for each chapter of Revelation 1-5 50 Points 3. Learn Two Verses (3:20; 20:15) 10 Points 4. Take Two Quizzes 10 Points 5. Take Exam 10 Points 100 Points Our Project: The devotional method of: Summary, Lesson, and Application will be explained in class. A copy is also attached. Students will send a copy of their devotionals to me for grading ([email protected]) before the time of the final exam. Page 1 Guide to Devotional Bible Study & Journaling What I suggest is that you invest some time in using a method called the “Devotional Method of Bible Study” and follows these steps: • Read the assigned verse, paragraph or chapter; • Summarize the section you read, note any lessons, truths, or doctrines that you find; • Write out a personal prayer from you to the Lord, asking Him to change you, or work in you, or impact your life: as a personal prayer that makes application of the truths you found in that passage. Here is a typical way I would do that below. You don’t have to do this method after this class, but I have been using and teaching this to students of the Word for 30 plus years and I can vouch for the immense response they give that the Word comes alive, sticks to their hearts; and they have grown deeply through this devotional pattern! This gives you a very basic illustration of what I mean by using the Devotional Bible Study method, and recording your summary, lessons, and a personal prayer of application. This would be the minimum amount of work needed for EACH Page 2 chapter. Isaiah 40 1. Simple Summary: This chapter covers the prediction of John the Baptist’s preparing the way for Christ (v. 3-5); the promise of God’s Word (v. 6-8); many descriptions of the power of God (v.12-26); and the famous wait upon the Lord passage in v. 31. 2. Various Lessons Found: Wow, Jesus when He came revealed in human form what the Glory of God looks like v. 5; we are reminded that we humans are as passing & transient as mowed grass, but the Word of God will last forever v.6-8; God knew that the earth is round (God said that 2700 years ago though science had not yet discovered that truth) v. 22 so He wants me to trust Him about things He knows and I don’t know; God wants me to meditate on His power v. 26; and He knows that life is hard, I get tired, weak, and fainting at times, but He wants me to rest in His strength to pass through and even rise above my struggles by following Him. 3. Personal Application Prayer: Lord, today I will pause and reflect upon your Majesty. I trust that Your plan is so much better than mine. I ask for You dear Lord to control and lead me. Lord, I want to wait on you right now and by faith go forth with Your strength. Amen. Have you paused yet today to check in with Jesus Christ? The best way to do that is through your Bible, because Jesus Christ is revealed to us as the Word of God. He is the Word, and the Word reveals Him. Each time we open God’s Word we can hear His Voice. At Creation God the Son, the Creator spoke and made all things; and through His Apostles and Prophets, His Word has been given. As you open to the last book of your Bibles, you open to the climactic conclusion of God's Word written down for us. The first word in the Greek New Testament text of Revelation is the word apocalupsis which can be translated as either “revelation” or “unveiling”. The next two words are Jesus Christ. That means in this last book we are: Getting to See the Real Jesus So we are opened to the “revelation of Jesus Christ”, or the “taking the cover off of Jesus Christ”, or the “disclosure of Jesus Christ”, or the “manifestation of Jesus Christ”, or the “unveiling of Jesus Christ” the Word of God. There is so much to think about as we open to 1 110213AM ClW-01 Rev.do Page 5 these Last Words of Christ, God's Word. Revelation completes God’s revelation of Himself to humanity through Christ. In Genesis the Creator, God the Son, walks and talks with Adam and Eve the first two humans to ever exist, created from the Hand of God. But God does not stay walking and talking to them. Because they sinned, He banishes them from the Paradise He made for them. Thus began all the sorrows and woes that have plagued humanity all these thousands of years. But in the book of Revelation the Creator explains that He is back, actively walking on Earth again, among His people. The Book of Revelation explains for us that God the Son, Jesus Christ the Creator is here on the ground guiding His Church to accomplish His purposes in the world. Much like a coach on the floor with his team, Jesus Christ is walking around and watching us play our positions He gave us to play. That is perhaps the most arresting truth in all the Bible for us. We are not alone, the Coach Himself, our Creator is personally wanting to help us get done what He desires us to do. To begin our look at Christ's Last Words, we need to listen to His Voice, and so join me in Revelation 1 as we read v.1-8, 19 Revelation 1:1-19 (NKJV) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. 4 John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.
