Qumran Great Isaiah Scroll: The Qumran Isaiah scrolls are two. Q or Qa is the Qumran Great Isaiah Scroll and Qb is the Qumran Scroll of Isaiah that is about 75% complete. Qa, the Qumran Great Isaiah Scroll is complete from the first word on page 1 to the last word on page 54. June 26, 2006 Go to Directory Menu For practice in reading differences in Q: Find the word "Immanuel" written as one word (contrary to the received text) as the final word in lines 1 and 3. Notice also a horizontal stroke at the right on line 1 and 3 setting off the enclosed lines as an important passage. There is also an indentation which is a paragraph mark when the preceding line has been filled with text. But more frequently, the gap at the end of the third line which is left unfilled is a sign of end of paragraph. Notice also that an editor has written a "he" above the 4th word in the second line making the word "ve-'aziynu" to be "ve-ha'azinu." Then see the next to last word in line 3 to see aleph added to the conjunction "kiy" (because or that). Aleph is added by the Q scribes with great frequency to prepositional forms and conjunctions ending in yod. But see "kiy" written without the aleph in the 1st word in line 4. Then see the space (spatium) in the middle of the last line which is a verse mark. The Masoretic text begins verse 13 3 words sooner with "eth." There is an omission of 2 words at the end of line 2 and at least two other differences with addition of and omission of an article which I will leave you to find for yourself. I hope this whets your appetite. Jesus said: Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39 The scroll pages are photo copies. Some are scanned in black and white and some in grays. The original scroll when it was first photographed was a slightly orange color with some more and less darkened areas. Thus you will be able to read the scroll here but it is a facsimile of a photo copy and not a reproduction of the actual colors of the scroll. This is a directory of pages of the Great Isaiah Scroll of the Qumran community. This scroll (which has been named by scholars as "Q") is dated at 100 BC. Evidence for the date is internal and we will point out those evidences as they appear. ( For instance see page 12 the last note). In the pages that follow we will cite the Great Isaiah Scroll as "Q" and the received text as Masoretic or "M." My comments on each page about the scroll are meant to help you to get to know about the scroll and the technical differences between it and the received text. It is not meant to be a commentary on the book of Isaiah. If you can read Hebrew it will enhance your study of the scroll greatly, but it is not necessary to read Hebrew to gain some insight into what the Scroll is like and to understand its importance. Although there are many differences between the Scroll and the Masoretic text, these are often spelling differences like the addition of a vowel or an article or conjunction or a change in person and number. Sometimes words or an entire verse may be left out. All these places are noted. A few occasions of extra words in the Q text are noted. In addition all editorial marks are noted as are also paragraph and versification gaps called spatiums. The critical comments are meant for beginning and intermediate students. Advanced students will also find things of interest on these pages., but this is not to be considered a "scholar's" work. Have we exhausted all the things that may be said about this text and noted all the variations between this text and the Masoretic? Surely not, even though we have attempted to cite them all in one way or another. If you have an interest in knowing what the Isaiah scroll is like and want to know more about it and the technical make up of the scroll and the major variations between this and the received text, then this is the place to begin. Two frequent variations will NOT be cited in this review. The addition of waw and yod to words as pronunciation helps to indicate vowels is very frequent and corresponds to the pointing to indicate these vowels, which was added by later Masoretic scholars. The addition of aleph in the same way is less frequent and will be cited. The second variation is the scribe's interchange of waw and yod. This is frequent. Where one expects to find a yod a waw is written and where one expects to find a waw a yod is written. After all variations are noted and taken into account and the reasons for them (lapses, spelling errors, simple human error in copying, dialectical difference, Aramaic environment etc.) are understood then it is easy to say with confidence that the Q text is substantially the same as the received text of the Book of Isaiah that we now read in our English Bible. If you are familiar with Hebrew you will find that the Important Information in the Introductory Page will save you a great deal of time in discovering the reasons for the different grammar and spelling in the Q manuscript when compared to the Masoretic text. If you discover any variations that I have not noted I would like to hear from you so adjustments can be made. I have added an introductory page that treats technical observations and spelling and grammatical structures peculiar to the Q scribe. We have responded to scores of such questions on many occasions—while teaching graduate seminars and Hebrew courses at Brigham Young University, presenting papers at professional symposia, and speaking to various lay audiences. These settings are always positive experiences for us, particularly because they reveal that the general membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a deep interest in the scrolls and other writings from the ancient world. The nonbiblical Dead Sea Scrolls are of great import because they shed much light on the cultural, religious, and political position of some of the Jews who lived shortly before and during the time of Jesus Christ.

    Daily Lectionary This outline is a devotional reading plan that covers the entire Sacred Scriptures each year. The selections are based on ancient models and are generally in harmony with the liturgical church year. The average reading is three chapters daily. A seasonal can- ticle is assigned for each month and is scheduled to replace the psalm on the first and last days of the month. All of the psalms are read twice a year. The lectionary is in accordance with Martin Luther’s suggestions: “But let the entire Psalter, divided in parts, remain in use and the entire Scriptures, divided into lections, let this be preserved in the ears of the church.” Also: “After that another book should be se- lected, and so on, until the entire Bible has been read through, and where one does not understand it, pass that by and glorify God.” Page 295, Lutheran Worship Concordia Publishing House Those participating in the Daily Lectionary are encouraged to be part of Bethany’s Small Group ministry. An emphasis of these small groups will not only be to discuss the Scripture that we have read, but also to devote ourselves to good works together. Chris- tians sometimes forget that our “devotional lives,” according to Paul, should not only include studying God’s Word (an absolute necessity), but also good works that are just as important. These good works in small groups could be anything that is profitable for others such as: making quilts for Lutheran World Relief, host- ing a meal for Family Promise, volunteering at a charity 5K race, giving rides to health care appointments, or picking up trash in God’s creation.

Starting in Isaiah 13, God launches a series of judgments against the Gentile nations of his day. Making Isaiah’s list are Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Tyre, and Syria. Tonight we’ll study God’s burden against the nations. ! Isaiah 15 begins, “The burden against Moab…” Three nations bordered Israel to the east - Moab, Edom, and Ammon. Today this area makes up the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - a pro-Western monarchy with its capitol city of Amman - or Ammon. ! Today, it’s fashionable to research your roots - track down the family tree. Websites like Ancestry.com utilize the power of the Internet to uncover your genealogy. For some folks this is a fun and meaningful pastime. For me, I’ve always been a little leery… I suspect I’m from a long line of horse thieves and swindlers. I’m not sure I want to know my ancestry. This is probably how most Moabites felt regarding their progenitors… ! The Moabites were a people with some definite skeletons in the closest! Their family tree had root rot. Recently, I read of a Michigan woman who gave her baby up for adoption. Sixteen years later she tracked him down on FB… only to get romantically involved. She had sex with her son… Obviously this gal is one sick pup.

    ISAIAH LESSON 1 Isaiah, in my opinion, is the most spiritual of the Old Testament books. The man, Isaiah, was a prophet and preacher at the time he wrote this book. Isaiah was prophet during the reign of 5 kings, most of whom were evil. His wife was a prophetess in her own right. Some believe that the word "prophetess" means wife of a prophet, but that is not correct. A person does not become a prophet, or a prophetess, because they are married to a prophet. The office of prophet, or prophetess, is a call from God. You are not called to preach, because your husband preaches. You may be called to preach, but if you are, the call is from God, not because of who you are related to. History tells us that Manasseh had Isaiah tied to two boards and sawn in two. The following Scripture is believed to be in reference to the horrible fate of Isaiah. Hebrews 11:37 "They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;" Isaiah had great reverence for God. He was a serious, spiritual man. He was known as the prophet of redemption. There were more prophecies of the coming Messiah in Isaiah than any other book, except Psalms. The name, "Isaiah", means Salvation of Jehovah, or Jehovah is Salvation. The book of Isaiah contains 66 chapters divided into 39, and 27 the same way the Old and New Testament is divided. The one thing that tells us beyond a doubt that Isaiah, the prophet, wrote all of it, is his use of the title "Holy One of Israel".

    The Book of Isaiah Introduction: Isaiah is called "The Book of Salvation." The name Isaiah means "Yahweh is salvation" or “Yahweh is the source of salvation.” Isaiah, who is called the Prince of Prophets, shines above all the other writers and prophets of Scripture. His mastery of the language, his rich and vast vocabulary, and his poetic skill have earned him the title, "Shakespeare of the Bible." He was educated, distinguished, and privileged, yet remained a deeply spiritual man. He was committed to obedience over the long haul of his 55-60 year ministry as a prophet of God. He was a true patriot who loved his country and his people. Strong tradition suggests that he died a martyr’s death under the reign of King Manasseh by being placed within the hollow of a tree trunk and sawed in two. He was a contemporary of Amos, Hosea and Micah. As might be expected, salvation is the overarching theme in the book of Isaiah. Other themes include judgment, holiness, punishment, captivity, the fall of the nation, comfort, hope and salvation through the coming Messiah. The first 39 books of Isaiah contain very strong messages of judgment against Judah and a call to repentance and holiness. The people exhibited an outward form of godliness, but their hearts had become corrupted. God warned them through Isaiah, to come clean and purify themselves, but they ignored his message. Isaiah predicted the demise and captivity of Judah, yet comforted them with this hope: God has promised to provide a Redeemer. The last 27 chapters contain God's message of forgiveness, consolation and hope, as God speaks through Isaiah, revealing his plan of blessing and salvation through the coming Messiah.
