Caso tenha esquecido de alguém, é que minha memória não é mais a mesma, depois dessa experiência. RESUMO Croton L. possui ca. de 1.200 espécies pantropicais, com maior diversidade nas Américas. Esse estudo teve como objetivos o levantamento de Croton no bioma Caatinga, esclarecimento da circunscrição de suas espécies, a resolução de problemas taxonômicos, além de tentar elucidar a história biogeográfica e a sua diversificação na Caatinga. Este estudo foi baseado em coleções, observação das populações em campo, análise de coleções de herbário e análise filogenética associado a estimativa de tempo de divergência. Foram reconhecidas 68 espécies de Croton para a Caatinga, sendo 21 delas endêmicas desse bioma. Fazem parte deste trabalho: Chave de identificação, descrições, ilustrações, mapas de distribuição geográfica das espécies e até duas coleções de herbário, além de comentários sobre o tipo de vegetação e estado de conservação segundo os critérios da IUCN. Na taxonomia das espécies são indicados 16 lectótipos, um neótipo, oito sinônimos e descritas três novas espécies: Croton arenosus, C. glanduloso-bracteatus e C. harleyi. Também foi realizado um estudo filogenético baseado em dados moleculares (ITS e trnL-F) associado à estimativa de tempo de divergência. Nessa análise foram reconhecidas 22 linhagens de Croton na Caatinga, que teriam se originado há cerca de 23M.a.a., com diversificação entre 18-6M.a.a., no Mioceno. Essas linhagens, geralmente, estão associadas a espécies de outras áreas de florestas sazonalmente decíduas, sugerindo uma forte relação entre essas floras neotropicais. ABSTRACT Croton L. includes ca. 1,200 pantropical species with highest diversity in the Americas. The objectives of the current work are to survey the Croton species that occur in the Caatinga biome, to clarify the circumscription of the species, to solve taxonomic problems, besides to try to elucidate the biogeographic history of the genus and its diversification in the Caatinga. This study had as basis the visit to herbarium collections, observation of natural populations in the field, analyses of herbarium collections and phylogenetic analyses associated to estimations of divergence times. We identified 68 species of Croton that occur in the Caatinga, with 21 being endemic to the biome. This work comprises identification keys, descriptions, illustrations and maps of geographical distribution for the species, plus comments about the vegetation types and conservation status according to the IUCN. In the taxonomic treatment of the species we indicate 16 lectotypes, one neotype, 8 synonyms and we describe three new species: Croton arenosus, C. glanduloso-bracteatus and C. harleyi. We also conduced a phylogenetic study with basis on molecular data (ITS and trnL-F) associated to the estimative of divergence times. In this analysis we identified 22 different lineages of Croton in the Caatinga, whose origin is dated at about 23 m.y.a. and their diversification ocurred between 18 to 6 m.y.a. during the Miocene. These Caatinga lineages are usually associated to species from other areas of seasonally deciduous forestes, what suggests a strong relationship between these neotropical floras. On the suggestion of Professor Lanjouw, who himself has worked on the Euphorbiaceae of Surinam, the author has investigated the pollen grains of this family of that area. From the result it was apparent that in the Surinam different could be Euphorbiaceae many pollen types distinguished.

Abstract An ethnobotanical study was carried out in the sacred Kaya forests of Kauma and Tsolokero of Kilifi County in Kenya. Ethnobotanical data on useful and medicinal plants was collected. Communities living around these two forests depend on the diversity of flora for their livelihood. The local herbalists use indigenous trees and shrubs to heal a variety of diseases. The communities have knowledge to prepare a variety of medicinal formulations to treat diseases which have been passed down through generations. In this study, twelve medicinal plants were selected and tested to validate their ability to control conditions caused by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Formulations from these twelve plants were prepared using a protocol that was adopted from the local medicinal practitioners.

Manos ABSTRACT. A new genus and species of Euphorbiaceae s.s., Brasiliocroton mamoninha, is described from two disjunct areas of lowland forest remnants in eastern and northeastern Brazil. It is a member of tribe Crotoneae and was previously confused with Croton and Micrandra. The resemblance to Micrandra is based on the branched in¯orescences and terminal position of the pistillate ¯owers, trigonous capsules, and ovate leaves with basal glands, but the stamens are more numerous and the pollen is inaperturate (like Croton). Brasiliocroton has a stellate-rosulate indumentum like some Croton species, but its anthers are erect in bud, and the position of the pistillate ¯owers is anomalous in Croton. Molecular data place Brasiliocroton as the closest sister group to Croton, once Astraea has been removed from Croton and placed sister to Acidocroton and Ophellantha.

Fruit characters in Malesian Euphorbiaceae. Telopea 10 (1): 169–177. It is argued that zoochory is more abundant in Malesian Euphorbiaceae than in any other tropical area, and probably played a more significant role in the diversification of the family in Malesia than elsewhere. Introduction The Euphorbiaceae are among the larger families of flowering plants with c. 300 genera and 8000 species (Webster 1994, Radcliffe-Smith 2001). They are usually recognised by their unisexual flowers and typical fruits, although a phylogenetic diagnosis with morphological characters is still difficult. Recent studies, using molecular characters, indeed indicate that they may not be monophyletic (Savolainen et al. 2000, among others). For many anatomical and morphological characters, comparative studies have been published covering the whole family or at least some of the five subfamilies, summarised with detailed references by Webster (1994). This includes vegetative, floral and seed characters. The fruits, however, never received much attention, and were hardly discussed by Webster. These fruits are superior, three-locular, dry schizocarps, dehiscing violently along the septa into three mericarps (‘cocci’); the mericarps consist of pericarp and two septal parts, and contain one or two dry seeds each, the seeds with or without a caruncle. The dispersal of Euphorbiaceae is usually considered to be autochorous by explosion of the ballistic fruits, and diplochorous in combination with myrmechory (Berg 1975 a, b).
