Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi
YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. Wood anatomical syndromes vary between shrubs and trees, but no prior work has explicitly evaluated the contingent evolution of wood anatomical diversity in the context of these plant habits. Methods Phylogenetic comparative methods were used to test for contingent evolution of habit, habitat and wood anatomy in the mega-diverse genus Croton (Euphorbiaceae), across the largest and most complete molecular phy- logeny of the genus to date. Key Results Plant habit and habitat are highly correlated, but most wood anatomical features correlate more strongly with habit. -

The long-term sustainability of the valued African or Cape buffalo Syncerus caffer caffer was investigated in an area that falls outside their permanent historical distribution. The habitat utilisation of the buffalo population and their range use patterns were investigated. Seasonal differences were apparent in habitat utilisation and were guided by nutritional needs and climatic variables. Range use patterns revealed an increase in range size during the cold, dry season. The buffalo density on Tswalu was the lowest recorded in the literature to date with 0.15 buffalo/km². The animals showed seasonal changes in their feeding preferences with occasional browsing. During the cold, dry season the population was under severe nutritional stress. -
Origin of the Cyathium-Bearing Euphorbieae (Euphorbiaceae): Phylogenetic Study Based on Morphological Characters

A cladistic analysis of the subfamily Euphorbioideae was undertaken to elucidate the origin of the cyathium- bearing Euphorbieae and to provide hypotheses about evolutionary relationships within the subfamily. Twenty-one species representing most of the genera within the study group and three outgroup taxa from the subfamilies Acalyphoideae and Crotonoideae were selected for parsimony analysis. An unweighted parsimony analysis of 24 morphological characters resulted in five equally parsimonious trees with consistency indices of 0.67 and tree lengths of 39 steps. The strict consensus tree supported monophyly of the cyathium-bearing Euphorbieae. The sister group relationships of cyathium bearing Euphorbieae with Maprounea (subtribe Hippomaninae) were supported weakly, and the origin of cyathium is possibly in Hippomaneae, or in the common ancestor of Euphorbieae and remaining taxa of Euphorbioideae plus Acalyphoideae. Within the tribe Euphorbieae, both subtribes Euphorbiinae and Neoguilauminiinae are monophyletic, but the African endemic subtribe Anthosteminae is unresolved. The resulting trees support the monophyly of the tribe Stomatocalyceae while the tribe Hippomaneae does not consistently form a clade. Keywords: Cyathium; Euphorbieae; Phylogeny. Vun F. Pax. Be.ntham hat in den Genera plantarum zum ersten Male eine Anzahl Gattungen aus der Familie der Enphorbiaceae zu einer Gruppe zusammen¬ gefaßt, die er als Jatropheae bezeichnet. Die dichasialen Blütenstände, in denen die Strahlen niederer Ordnung von weiblichen Blüten begrenzt wer¬ den, während die viel zahlreicheren männlichen Blüten mit Achsen höherer Ordnung abschließen, charakterisiert scharf diese Gruppe. Dazu kommt eine ausgesprochene Protogynie der Pflanze. Schon in den »Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien« habe ich die BENniAMSche Umgrenzung angenommen und in dem neuesten Hefte des Pflanzenreiches ausführlicher begründet. Ehe die verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen der Jatropheae innerhalb der Familie einer Erörterung unterzogen werden, müssen die phylogene¬ tischen Beziehungen der 12 hierher gehörigen Gattungen eine kurze Be¬ sprechung finden. Ich unterscheide zwei Subtribus, die Jatroplünae, deren Filamente sämtlich oder wenigstens die innere verwachsen sind, und die Micrandrinae mit freien Staubblättern. Beide Gruppen haben gemeinsamen Ursprung und zeigen vielfach analoge Progressionen im Blütenbaue. -

Mennega Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Utrecht University branch, Heidelberglaan 2, 3584 es Utrecht, The Netherlands SUMMARY The wood anatomy was studied of 82 species from 34 out of 54 genera in the subfamily Euphorbioideae, covering all five tribes recognized in this subfamily. In general the woods show a great deal of similarity. They are charac terized by a relative paucity of vessels, often arranged in short to long, dumbbell-shaped or twin, radial multiples, and by medium-sized to large intervessel pits; fibres often have gelatinous walls; parenchyma apotracheal in short, wavy, narrow bands and diffuse-in-aggregates; mostly uni- or only locally biseriate rays, strongly heterocellular (except Hippomane, Hura and Pachystroma). Cell contents, either silica or crystals, or both together, are nearly always present and often useful in distinguishing between genera. Radiallaticifers were noticed in most genera, though they are scarce and difficult to trace. The laticifers are generally not surrounded by special cells, except in some genera of the subtribe Euphorbiinae where radiallaticifers are comparatively frequent and conspicuous. Three ofthe five tribes show a great deal of conformity in their anatomy. Stomatocalyceae, however, stand apart from the rest by the combination of the scarcity of vessels, and mostly biseriate, vertically fused and very tall rays. Within Euphorbieae the subtribe Euphorbiinae shows a greater vari ation than average, notably in vessel pitting, the frequent presence of two celled parenchyma strands, and in size and frequency of the laticifers. -

Introduction Many investigators have stated (e.g. Lindau 1895, Wodehouse Erdtman that 1935, 1952), pollen morphology can be of great also importance for plant taxonomy, while it was known that in Euphorbiaceae several types of pollen grains exist (e.g. Erdtman 1952). On the suggestion of Professor Lanjouw, who himself has worked on the Euphorbiaceae of Surinam, the author has investigated the pollen grains of this family of that area. From the result it was apparent that in the Surinam different could be Euphorbiaceae many pollen types distinguished.
