Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is designed to safeguard the world's threatened biodiversity hotspots in developing countries. It is a joint initiative of Conservation International (CI), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank. CEPF supports projects in hotspots, the biologically richest and most endangered areas on Earth. A fundamental purpose of CEPF is to ensure that civil society is engaged in efforts to conserve biodiversity in the hotspots. An additional purpose is to ensure that those efforts complement existing strategies and frameworks established by local, regional and national governments. CEPF aims to promote working alliances among community groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government, academic institutions and the private sector, combining unique capacities and eliminating duplication of efforts for a comprehensive approach to conservation. CEPF is unique among funding mechanisms in that it focuses on biological areas rather than political boundaries and examines conservation threats on a corridor-wide basis to identify and support a regional, rather than a national, approach to achieving conservation outcomes. Corridors are determined through a process of identifying important species, site and corridor-level conservation outcomes for the hotspot. CEPF targets transboundary cooperation when areas rich in biological value straddle national borders, or in areas where a regional approach will be more effective than a national approach. The Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests of Tanzania and Kenya hotspot (hereafter referred to as the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests hotspot) is one of the smallest of the 25 global biodiversity hotspots.1 It qualifies by virtue of its high endemicity and a severe degree of threat. Although the hotspot ranks low compared to other hotspots in total numbers of endemic species, it ranks first among the 25 hotspots in the number of endemic plant and vertebrate species per unit area (Myers et al. 2000). McGuire, Chair The identification of biotic and abiotic factors that promote the diversification of clades across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula remains a difficult challenge. A variety of ecological and evolutionary processes can be driving such patterns, and clade-specific traits may also play a role in the evolution of these groups. Comparative evolutionary studies of particular clades, relying on a phylogenetic framework, can be used to investigate many of these topics. Beyond these mechanisms there are abiotic factors, such as geological events, that can drive vicariance and dispersal events for large sets of taxa. The investigation of historical biogeography in a comparative phylogenetic framework can be used to detect such patterns. My dissertation explores these topics using reptiles and amphibians as study systems, and I rely on the generation of molecular sequence data, phylogenetics, and the use of comparative phylogenetic methods to address a variety of questions. I provide the abstract for each chapter below. Chapter 1: The reproductive modes of anurans (frogs and toads) are the most diverse among all the terrestrial vertebrates, and a major challenge is identifying selective factors that promote the evolution or retention of reproductive modes across clades.

Some of these activities focus directly on POs, for example through capacity development interventions. Other activities focus on creating or strengthening cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder platforms for dialogue. A third set of activities focus on improving the “enabling environment” for POs, for example by improving clarity of resources tenure. An often neglected area of support is in strengthening public forest institutions (PFI) as key element of the “enabling environment” for POs (see FAO’s policy brief on strengthening public forestry institutions, and FAO/FFF working paper “Making Change Happen”). In fact, their mandate often includes improvements of livelihood for the rural poor or support to small forestry producers and community forestry. The modalities by which this support is provided are rather mixed and range from providing extension services, facilitating PES schemes, administering incentives programs, maintaining nurseries, etc. However, the impact of their support to POs is rather mixed. In some cases, they are perceived as hindering POs development while in other cases they are a critical element of success. Anecdotally, the countries that have made more progress in supporting SMFE and POs have embraced a stronger “result orientation”.

The list comprises of 30 currently known amphibians (28 anurans and two caecilians), which includes 11 families and 15 genera. In addition, individual records per species, distribution in the reserve and brief remarks about the species are presented. The checklist is based on information from museum collections, field guides, unpublished reports and newly collected field data. We are able to confirm the presence of two Eastern Afromontane species in the SHNR: Scolecomorphus cf. vittatus and Callulina cf. kreffti. The latter has not been recorded since the original collection of a single specimen over 50 years ago.
