Description Neuadd Lwyd is a handsome former Rectory which has a feeling of quality and elegance throughout. The present building was thought to have been constructed in circa 1871 in place of an older building for Hugh Davies Owen who was the incumbent Reverend for the parish of Penymynydd at the neighbouring St Gredifael Church. Neuadd Lwyd was constructed of stone, some reclaimed from the original build, under tiled roof and the finest materials were used costing the Church approximately £1,482. The build lasted just under a year and was completed by late 1871. In recent years the current occupiers have meticulously renovated the property creating a beautiful family home although it is also used as a Bed & Breakfast earning a 5 star rating by the Welsh Tourist Board. From the vestibule the principal rooms retain all the original features with decorative plaster ceilings and cornice work, picture and dado rails, panelling, window shutters, panelled doors with deep architraves and decorative fireplaces. www.jackson-stops.co.uk Beyond the principal reception rooms is an inner hall with a separate entrance to the sitting room and beneath the back stairs steps lead down to an extensive basement incorporating cellar and wine bins. Off the inner hall is a superb farmhouse style kitchen with fitted wall and base units under granite work surfaces incorporating an oil fired Aga beyond which there is a separate preparation kitchen which was formerly the scullery containing fitted wall and base units with a full range of cooking appliances and centre island. On the opposite side of the inner hall is a utility room, wc and store room and butler’s pantry. From the reception hall a turned oak staircase with half landing leads to a galleried landing. All of the bedrooms are ensuite and have quality fittings throughout. The period features of fireplaces and cornicing is continued throughout the first floor. Off the landing are three double bedrooms with ensuites overlooking the gardens and towards the Snowdonian Range. Off the inner hall is a linen room and the back stairs. There are a further 2 bedrooms, the principle having a dressing room. Outside The gardens and grounds are certainly a notable feature of Neuadd Lwyd being visited by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2007 and contain specimen trees and shrubs, floral borders, formal lawns, kitchen garden and paddocks. The property is accessed via a splayed pillared entrance with stone retaining wall onto a gravel driveway. The drive is flanked by mature Beech Trees and lawn with lighting leading to a large stone turning circle at the front of the property. A stone gateway with wrought iron gates opens to a rear courtyard consisting of a range of outbuildings once being the coach house, potato store, old stable, hay store, cow shed and potting shed. This building would lend itself as garaging or alternately letting units subject to acquiring the relevant planning permission. A gravel pathway leads past the house with two rear entrances down to a vegetable garden having a Hartley’s Botanic greenhouse and a 5 bar gate to the paddocks. Beyond is a kitchen garden incorporating a range of herbs subdivided into a tiled walkway and pergola. A small gate leads to a beautifully manicured formal garden which has been meticulously finished to incorporate a range of specimen trees and shrubs with a contemporary design. To the side and rear of the property is a partly raised patio which takes in the beautiful rural view and has French door from the main reception rooms. L Biographical Index of British and Irish Botanists. TTTEN & BOULGER, A BIOaEAPHICAL INDEX OF BKITISH AND IRISH BOTANISTS. BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX OF BRITISH AND IRISH BOTANISTS COMPILED BY JAMES BEITTEN, F.L.S. SENIOR ASSISTANT, DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY, BBITISH MUSEUM AKD G. S. BOULGEE, E.L. S., F. G. S. PROFESSOR OF BOTANY, CITY OF LONDON COLLEGE LONDON WEST, NEWMAN & CO 54 HATTON GARDEN 1893 LONDON PRINTED BY WEST, NEWMAN AND HATTON GAEDEN PEEFACE. A FEW words of explanation as to the object and scope of this Index may fitly appear as an introduction to the work. It is intended mainly as a guide to further information, and not as a bibliography or biography. We have been liberal in including all who have in any way contributed to the literature of Botany, who have made scientific collections of plants, or have otherwise assisted directly in the progress of Botany, exclusive of pure Horticulture. We have not, as a rule, included those who were merely patrons of workers, or those known only as contributing small details to a local Flora. Where known, the name is followed by the years of birth and death, which, when uncertain, are marked with a ? or c. [circa) ; or merely approximate dates of "flourishing" are given. Then follows the place and day of bu'th and death, and the place of burial ; a brief indication of social position or occupation, espe- cially in the cases of artisan botanists and of professional collectors; chief university degrees, or other titles or offices held, and dates of election to the Linnean and Eoyal Societies.

  • We Will Remember Them...The Men From
The War Memorial project began when I received a letter from Revd Melanie Fitzgerald, of St Mary’s, Sheffield. The Walkley History Group were restoring a window in the former Liberal Reform Club, now the Walkley Community centre. My Great Uncle, James Craven, was one of the club members who had been killed in WWI and who had been commemorated in the window. My family had photographs of James which allowed the team to restore his picture in the window, which was rededicated on 4th August 2014, a hundred years after the outbreak of World War I. The restored photograph of James Craven in the Walkley Community Centre Memorial window. The Walkley historians were the inspiration for our research in Eglwysbach and Llansantffraid Glan Conwy Each Remembrance Sunday we stand beside the Memorial at the gates of St Martin’s Church whilst the names of the Eglwysbach war dead are read aloud. I have always found this a very moving ceremony, but in reality we no longer know about these men. Melanie had succeeded in tracing me through three generations of women, all of whom had married and changed their surname. Her determination in tracing James’ descendants inspired me to look at the men from our villages in order that they also can be remembered as people, not just as a list of names. 1 Our starting point was the St. Martin’s Memorial, which lists the names of twenty two men who died in the First World War, their Regiment and residence. There is also a Roll of Honour in the Church, which lists men who served in the forces, including some of the fallen.

  • Hugh Davies (1739-1821)
HUGH DAVIES (1739-1821) Mark Lawley email: [email protected] This is one in a series of articles about prominent British and Irish field-bryologists of the past. The author would be very pleased to learn of any information which supplements its content. A Social and Biographical History of British and Irish Field-bryologists is also available on-line at http://britishbryologicalsociety.org.uk/ Botanical career Davies’s most important publication is Welsh Botanology (1813), the first part of which is the first detailed flora of a Welsh county (Anglesey), listing 166 mosses and 28 liverworts for Anglesey. Davies was in the bryological vanguard of contemporary botanists, and seems to have taken interest in bryophytes from about 1790 onwards. He found, for example, the moss Glyphomitrium daviesii (which is named after him) at Carreg Onnan and Llanfihangel Dinsylwi near Bwrdd Arthur in 1790 and on Snowdon a few years later. Other mosses he found include Acaulon muticum from Tywyn Aberffraw, Antitrichia curtipendula on Red Hill, Beaumaris (Anglesey), Hennediella heimii at Penmon on Anglesey, Pterygoneurum ovatum near Llangoed and Friary and Lleiniog on Anglesey, Scleropodium tourettii at Llansadwrn, as well as the liverworts Riccia canaliculata at Llyn Traffwll on Anglesey, and Targionia hypophylla at Tyfry, Rhoscefnhir, Anglesey. Davies was a friend of Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), corresponding with him at least as early as his time at Lan-faes and Penmon in the later 1760s and early 1770s, and toured the Isle of Man with him in 1774, returning there alone the following year. He provided information about the natural history of North Wales for publications by Pennant, as well as William Hudson’s Flora Anglica (2nd edition, 1788), Smith and Sowerby’s English Botany (1790-1814), and Turner and Dillwyn’s The Botanist’s Guide through England and Wales (1805).
