Mrs Hope also bequeathed all her books to the National Library, of which about ten works were chosen for retention, most of them being old-time children's books (Dept of Printed Books). Of the others especial interest attaches to a copy of J. R. Planche's The Pursuivant of arms which is interleaved with manuscript notes and contains, besides, many manuscript corrections in the text. The books not needed are to be sold for the Library's benefit. B. Saxena Drug Standardisation Research Section, Central Research Institute – Ayurveda, Aamkho , Gwalior –474 009 (India). Abstract: The genus crocus L. consists currently of about 160 recognized species, small, corm bearing, perennial species having an old world distribution, primarily in mediterranean – west Europe and NW Africa to W China, with the center of species diversity on the Balkan Peninsula and in Turkey. Due to very dark form of crocus banaticus also called Romanian form. All crocus banaticus originated in Romania but this was raised from wild seeds. Due to distinctive plant, it creates its own sub- genus is the crocus sub-family known as crocoideae and sub-genus crociris. History, botany, taxonomy, infra-specific taxa, distribution, ecology, phenology, description, chromosome counts, etc. are provided with key to their identification. We Will Remember Them...The Men From
The War Memorial project began when I received a letter from Revd Melanie Fitzgerald, of St Mary’s, Sheffield. The Walkley History Group were restoring a window in the former Liberal Reform Club, now the Walkley Community centre. My Great Uncle, James Craven, was one of the club members who had been killed in WWI and who had been commemorated in the window. My family had photographs of James which allowed the team to restore his picture in the window, which was rededicated on 4th August 2014, a hundred years after the outbreak of World War I. The Walkley historians were the inspiration for our research in Eglwysbach and Llansantffraid Glan Conwy Each Remembrance Sunday we stand beside the Memorial at the gates of St Martin’s Church whilst the names of the Eglwysbach war dead are read aloud. I have always found this a very moving ceremony, but in reality we no longer know about these men. Melanie had succeeded in tracing me through three generations of women, all of whom had married and changed their surname. Her determination in tracing James’ descendants inspired me to look at the men from our villages in order that they also can be remembered as people, not just as a list of names. 1 Our starting point was the St. Martin’s Memorial, which lists the names of twenty two men who died in the First World War, their Regiment and residence. There is also a Roll of Honour in the Church, which lists men who served in the forces, including some of the fallen. -

HUGH DAVIES (1739-1821) Mark Lawley email: [email protected] This is one in a series of articles about prominent British and Irish field-bryologists of the past. A Social and Biographical History of British and Irish Field-bryologists is also available on-line at http://britishbryologicalsociety.org.uk/ Botanical career Davies’s most important publication is Welsh Botanology (1813), the first part of which is the first detailed flora of a Welsh county (Anglesey), listing 166 mosses and 28 liverworts for Anglesey. Davies was in the bryological vanguard of contemporary botanists, and seems to have taken interest in bryophytes from about 1790 onwards. He found, for example, the moss Glyphomitrium daviesii (which is named after him) at Carreg Onnan and Llanfihangel Dinsylwi near Bwrdd Arthur in 1790 and on Snowdon a few years later. Other mosses he found include Acaulon muticum from Tywyn Aberffraw, Antitrichia curtipendula on Red Hill, Beaumaris (Anglesey), Hennediella heimii at Penmon on Anglesey, Pterygoneurum ovatum near Llangoed and Friary and Lleiniog on Anglesey, Scleropodium tourettii at Llansadwrn, as well as the liverworts Riccia canaliculata at Llyn Traffwll on Anglesey, and Targionia hypophylla at Tyfry, Rhoscefnhir, Anglesey. Davies was a friend of Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), corresponding with him at least as early as his time at Lan-faes and Penmon in the later 1760s and early 1770s, and toured the Isle of Man with him in 1774, returning there alone the following year. He provided information about the natural history of North Wales for publications by Pennant, as well as William Hudson’s Flora Anglica (2nd edition, 1788), Smith and Sowerby’s English Botany (1790-1814), and Turner and Dillwyn’s The Botanist’s Guide through England and Wales (1805). -

UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI PISA Dipartimento di Farmacia CORSO DI LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN FARMACIA Tesi di Laurea Analisi dei costituenti volatili emessi in vivo da specie del genere Salvia facenti parte di una collezione dell'Orto Botanico di Pisa mediante la tecnica SPME in GC-MS Relatore Candidata Dott. Riassunto Trenta specie del genere Salvia, facenti parte di una collezione dell’Orto Botanico di Pisa, sono state analizzate in vivo tramite la tecnica della Head-Space Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (HS- SPME) abbinata alla GC-MS (gas-cromatografia accoppiata alla spettrometria di massa). Sono stati identificati oltre 300 composti organici volatili (VOC). Il profilo di emissione di tali composti è stato sottoposto ad analisi statistica mediante il clustering gerarchico, effettuato sia sui singoli VOC, sia sulle classi chimiche dei composti. È emersa una discreta correlazione tra le similitudini rilevate dal clustering gerarchico e la provenienza geografica delle specie raccolte. In ragione dell’habitat originario delle diverse specie, infatti, il profilo di emissione in vivo dei VOC muta: piante provenienti da una stessa area geografica tendono ad avere pattern di emissione simili tra loro, sia in termini di prevalenza di composti individuali sia di classi chimiche. Non ho rintracciato nella letteratura studi effettuati su un numero così esteso di Salvie, né studi sulle emissioni volatili spontanee da parte di campioni analizzati in vivo, non sottoposti ad alcun trattamento di essiccamento, macinazione o distillazione. 1. C/Campus Universitário s/n, 0207. Albacete. Resumen El género Crocus pertenece a la familia de las Iridáceas y es conocido por su especie cultivada, el azafrán (Crocus sativus L.). El género incluye 88 especies, muchas de las cuales tienen interés como ornamentales, y otras son exclusivamente silvestres. En su conjunto, constituyen una fuente de variabilidad genética de enorme interés. En España pueden encontrarse 6 especies silvestres de este género, que son tanto de floración otoñal (C. serotinus, C. nudiflorus y C. cambessedesii) como primaveral (C. nevadensis, C. carpetanus y C. vernus). El trabajo que aquí exponemos, ha tenido como objetivo llevar a cabo una revisión minuciosa de las citas sobre la localización de estas especies en España y la recolección de ejemplares en los lugares en que ha sido posible, para su posterior conservación en el Banco de Germoplasma Vegetal de Cuenca (Centro de investigación Agraria de Albadalejito), así como la caracterización del ambiente forestal en el que crecen.
