1880 January 21 : *Sheffield Daily Telegraph DEATH OF JOHN NEWBOULD, It is with extreme regret—a feeling in which thousands of our readers will join—that we this morning announce the death of Mr. John Newbould, solicitor, of the firm of Messrs. Newbould and Gould, in this town. Mr. Newbould's illness has been of very brief duration. Last Friday week he felt indisposed, having caught cold, which severely and unpleasantly affected his face. He was able, however, to attend to his professional duties until Tuesday, when he was obliged to leave his office and return home in a cab. He went at to bed, and sent for his medical attendant, Mr. Jonathan Barber, who subsequently called the services Dr. Banham, and these gentlemen were in attendance upon him till his death, which took place at two o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, Sharrow Bank, Psalter lane. The cause death was "blood poisoning." Deceased, who was about 58 years old and unmarried, was the second son of Mr. Henry Newbould, a gentleman of independent means, who had also to do with the well-known manufacturing firm of Samuel Newbould and Co., which has since been converted into a limited liability company. He was one of three children, the others being the Rev. William Williamson Newbould and Miss Elizabeth Newbould, who resided with the deceased, and by both of whom he is survived. In the year 1843 he was articled to Messrs. Richards and Walker, of London, and in 1848 was admitted as a solicitor, and commenced the practice of his profession in Sheffield on his own account, until the year 1867, when he was joined in partnership by Mr. Thomas Gould, and he continued until his death the head of the firm of Messrs. Newbould and Gould. Mr. Newbould was remarkable for his kindliness of heart and liberality of disposition. In addition to his handsome contributions to the local charities and other purposes of a public character, he gave most generously of his means for the relief of suffering and want wherever found them; and his benevolence was most unostentatious and unassuming. Few private gentlemen in Sheffield gave more ungrudgingly in a quiet way to relieve the needy, and many acts of kindness of which the public knew nothing will be sorrowfully yet gratefully recalled today by the recipients. As a gentleman Mr. Newbould was held in very high esteem by a wide circle of friends; as a member of the legal profession he was greatly respected by his brethren, and had the fortune to enjoy -what he richly deserved - the unqualified confidence of his clients. He was a member of the lncorporated Law Society of London and Sheffield, a feoffee of Bradfield, a governor of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Savings Bank, and also the Sheffield General Infirmary, as well as of the Charity Schools. As a Churchman and a member of the congregation of St. Andrew's, Sharrow - of which he was a patron, and one time filled the office of churchwarden - he took a deep interest in the Church's welfare, and was a liberal contributor to all her schemes - the Church Extension Society losing in Mr. Newbould a warm and generous supporter. His contribution to the Church Extension scheme was £500. He acted as treasurer to the National Society for educating the poor according to the principles of the . When the Cecil road schools were detached from St. Andrew's, Sharrow, and connected with St. Barnabas', Highfield, Mr. Newbould continued as treasurer, and held the office till his decease. At the time of the Sheffield flood he officiated as clerk to the Inundation Commissioners, and had thus an active hand in the settlement of the claims arising out that calamity. He was never what could be called a public man in the ordinary acceptation of the term, for he was personally averse to all public appearances which involved the necessity of speaking. At the last School Board election he permitted himself to be nominated as one of the Church candidates, and though he never addressed single meeting, nor even issued an address to the burgesses, his high character and personal qualities were sufficient to ensure his return. His death, at

- 6 of 10 - natstand: last updated 19/11/2016 the comparatively early age we have stated, thus causes a vacancy in our all but newly- elected School Board. Mr. Newbould was a staunch Conservative, and took keen and active interest in the candidature of Mr. C. Stuart Wortley last December. Of the deceased it may be said that those who knew him best will regret him most, and the town of which he was a respected citizen can ill afford to lose those who are remembered more by what they have done than by what they have said. The interment will take place at Ecclesall, where deceased's father interred, Saturday next.

1889 July 16 : *Sheffield Daily Telegraph DEATH OF MR. SAMUEL NEWBOULD. We regret to record the death on the 13 th inst., at Abbeyfield, Leamington, of Mr. Samuel Newbould at the age of 71. Mr. Newbould was the eldest son of Mr. Samuel Newbould, one the firm Newbould and Co., who for many years carried on extensive business, especially in files, edge tools, and saws for the Russian market, at Bridgefield Works, Sheffield moor. The private company of Newbould was some twenty years ago converted into a limited company, and the gentleman whose death we now record was a director of that company down his decease. In days gone by the members of the old firm, John, Samuel, and Henry Newbould, were conspicuous as Sheffield merchants. They have all passed away, and by one of those curious circumstances which so often occur, it happens that at present there is not a single descendent of the three brothers resident in Sheffield. The last member of the family who lived here was Mr. John Newbould, solicitor, who died in 1880. His sister. Miss Elizabeth Newbould, resided with him at death, but shortly afterwards took up her abode at Leamington. Mr. Samuel Newbould was never prominent in any of the public work connected with his native town. He was a man of reserved habit, warmly attached to his friends, and with a very tender heart. Some years ago he was conspicuous in the hunting field at Worksop, but the state of his health rendered it necessary that be should give up his favourite amusement. He then resided at Leamington, having married Miss Elizabeth Primrods Shaw, of Glasgow. The lady survives her husband, but he has left no children. His brother. Mr. Francis Newbould, with whom has been associated throughout his life, now resides at Eastbourne. About 45 years ago Mr. S. Newbould went to India in connection with the business of the firm, and resided there for some years. He used frequently to talk of the months which were occupied in the journey, so different from the railway and steaming speed of the present day. The interment takes place to-morrow. [This is a rather confusing description of the family tree and should be used with caution.]

1894 : Civil registration Index Death of Williamson Newbould registered in Fulham, second quarter.

1897 December 9 : *Morning Post WILLS AND BEQUESTS Personal estate of the value of £42,453 7s. 8d. has been left by Mr. Francis Newbould, of Broomhill, Chesterfield-road, Eastbourne, formerly of Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, who died on the 30th of September last, aged 78 years, and of whose will, which bears date August 28, 1885, with codicils of the 29th of May and the 8th of December, 1893, the executors are his son Francis Samuel Newbould, of Drayton Fields. Daventry, and Carl Bovenschen, of 7, Fen-court, silk merchant, brother-in-law of Mrs. Newbould, and Alfred Ernest Maxfield, of Cairns-chambers, Sheffield, to each of whom for the executorship the testator bequeathed £105, to his son Francis his horses and carriages, and to Mrs. Newbould £500, the use and enjoyment of his furniture and household effects, and a life annuity of £400. Sanderson Bros, and Newbould), who one time resided in Sheffield, afterwards Cheltenham and Broomhill, Eastbourne. Captain Henry Newbould was educated at Clifton and Sandhurst. From there he received a commission in the 4th Hussars, but after serving number of years he resigned when the regiment went to India. Notes:

1 The Will of Samuel Newbould of Broomhill was proved in London on 1853 October 15. The executors, and those named in the will were daughter Lucretia Ann and sons Samuel and Francis. This suggests that there were no other surviving children.

2 Francis Newbould was born in New York about 1819. [Census 1881]
