CLYNFIEW 1973176 Ffynhonnell / Source Colonel J W Lewis-Bowen, Clynfiew, Boncath. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1972-73 Disgrifiad / Description Muniments of the depositor's family, comprising some 650 deeds, associated estate documents, and some family papers. The deposit divides into two groups, which came together at the end of the nineteenth century, that relating to the Lewis family of Llwyngrawys, parish of , co. Cardigan, and Clynfiew (Clunfyw) on the one hand, and that of the Bowen family on the other. The Clynfiew muniments relate to lands mainly in the parish of Llangoedmor, and the parishes of Maenordeifi, Clydau, Llanfihangel Penbedw, and Cilrhedyn, co. Pembroke. The main builder of the estate was Thomas Lewis of Llwyngrawys (c. 1690-1776). There are some eighty-five deeds of the second half of the sixteenth century and of the seventeenth century relating to the Pembrokeshire part of the estate; many of these centre on James Mores of Clydau, including his marriage settlement, 1607. Part of the estate in the parish of Clydau bought by Thomas Lewis in 1831 once belonged to the Morgan(n) family (cf. D. W.B. s.n. Maurice Morgan(n)), which is represented in a number of deeds. There are rentals for the Clynfiew estate for 1825-37 and 1886-1916. Associated papers include some eighteenth and nineteenth century correspondence of members of the Lewis family, mostly relating to estate matters, and some accounts, among them accounts for rebuilding at Llwyngrawys, 1752. Thomas Bowen of Cardigan (and Pantyderi, parish of Llanfair Nant-gwyn, co. Pembroke, which estate he sold) married in 1815 a daughter of William Williams of Tre-fach and Cardigan (1732-99, D W B.). The estates of William Williams that passed to the Bowens through this marriage lay mainly in the parishes of Bridell, , and Whitchurch (Llanfair Nant-gwyn; the latter was formerly a chapelry of the parish of Whitchurch), co. Pembroke, and the town of Cardigan. For the Pembrokeshire properties there are again some eighty-five deeds for the period 1549-1700. William Williams's second wife was Elinor Morgan of Cardigan; a substantial group of deeds relate to property of the Morgan family in Cardigan, and one bundle to property in Tre-lech a'r Betws, co. Carmarthen, 1692-1764.
